Journalist: Welcome to the
programme, Professor Higgs. King
Arthur must be one of the most
famous, well-loved kings in the
world but nobody really knows if
he even existed or not, do they?
Professor Higgs: Well, we do have
some records of a king named
Arthur, but he’s different from the
magical stories we love so much.
Journalist: So what was the
historical Arthur like then?
Professor Higgs: Well, he was
probably a Celtic king, a brave
soldier and fought in battles
against the Saxons. The Saxons
came from Denmark and Germany
and invaded Britain at about the
same time that Arthur probably
lived. The legends of Arthur are
full of incredible tales of adventure
and magic so it’s difficult to believe
they were really true. Take the
story of the magic sword Excalibur
for example. The legend says that a
lady lived in a lake and...
Journalist: Oh yes, The Lady of the
Lake. That was one of my favourite
parts when I was young.
Professor Higgs: Exactly. It’s perfect
for children’s stories but magic is
completely impossible from a
scientific and historical point of
view. How can a lady live in a lake?
It doesn’t make sense, does it?! And
then there are all the other
characters like Merlin, the famous
knights, and places like Camelot,
Avalon.... None of them really
existed I’m sure.
Journalist: But Avalon is the place
where King Arthur is sleeping. The

return to help Britain when the
country needs him. I think it’s
true!!!
Professor Higgs: Well, if you believe
that legend I suppose you’ll believe
anything. In my opinion it’s
impossible.

the new King Arthur film? My
brother and I thought it was
