Dominican

independence

What happened on February 27, 1844 in

the Dominican Republic? On February 27,
1844, Juan Pablo Duarte and the rest of “La
Triniatria” achieved the independence of
the Dominican Republic as a sovereign
State with a cannon shot from the “Puerta
del Conde” in Santo Domingo and raised
the blue, red and white from the
Dominican Republic.

The Dominican War of

Independence was the
historical process that began
with the proclamation of the
Dominican Republic and its
separation from Haiti on
February 27, 1844.

During the 22 years preceding

independence, the entire island of
Hispaniola was under the rule of Haiti,
as a result of the occupation by this
country of the state of Spanish Haiti,
which emerged briefly in 1821 in the
eastern part of the island.

The separation of Haiti was

proclaimed at the Mercy Gate after
the firing of the blunderbuss fired
by the patrician Matías Ramón
Mella in the early hours of February
27, 1844 and by the raising of the
tricolor flag at the El Conde gate by
the Patricio Francisco del Rosario
Sánchez, both inspired by the ideals
of the founder of the nationality,
Juan Pablo Duarte.
