Unit Title: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (COMP7068)

Assessment Title: Real-world problem solving using Artificial Intelligence Approaches
Unit Level: 7 Assessment Number: 1 of 1
Credit Value of Unit: 20 Date Issued: 29/01/2024
Unit Leader: Hari Pandey Submission Due Date: 10/05/2024 Time: 12:30 PM

Quality Assessor (QA): Marcin Budka Feedback Method: Brightspace

This is an individual assignment which carries 100% of the final unit mark.

ASSESSMENT TASK
In this assignment, you will be given the opportunity to progressively develop your own project for solving a real-world
problem of interest, while implementing AI based techniques. The project which you will implement using AI techniques
may involve, for example the deployment of: Machine learning; Natural Language Processing and text understanding;
Computer vision with image and/or objects understanding; Speech recognition; Robotics with intelligent Tasks; Intelligent
agents with reasoning and decision-support; or Smart environments with intelligent sensing and situations awareness, etc.

A key aspect of this assessment is to principally demonstrate your capability to perform critical analyses and evaluation of
your "AI solving real-world problem". This should involve the implementation of the conceptual foundations for
performing scientific experiments.

These should consider:

1. Your problem definition and understanding.

2. Your postulated hypothesis for solving your problem using AI.
3. Implementing your AI solver and evaluating its performance using appropriate metrics.
4. Validating your hypothesis with concrete explanatory narratives and conclusive outcomes

You can adopt AI based algorithms which will be covered during the Unit delivery, in accord with your chosen real-world
problem. You should equally endeavor into providing your supporting code documentation together with your project
report. The implementation of code should be in Python as a notebook.

You will need to discuss your initial project ideas with your Unit Leader and Seminar session demonstrator. You should
provide a one page proposal concerning your AI project of choice. In all cases, please make sure you discuss and
finalise your proposal pager by the end of week 5 (March 1st, 2024) of the semester. Please note that you can
progressively discuss your proposal throughout the period prior to week 5 and refine further later on, if needed, with your
Unit Leader and/or demonstrator, in order to get critical feedback and stay on top of your project work development in
time.

Please note that for your project guidance, links to datasets will be made available on Brightspace (under the project
guidance document which will be provided by the Unit Leader). You can use these datasets or adopt others of your
choice, if needed for your project. Nevertheless, you will need to reference all the data sources which you have used in
your project in the write up of your technical report.

ORIGINALITY REQUIREMENT
The following originality requirements will apply to this assignment:
You are allowed to use any Generative AI or other AI powered tools, such as ChatGPT, for specific aspects as directed by
the Unit Leader. Where any part of your assessment is sourced, or partially sourced from a generative AI tool, this
requires a reference in the BU Harvard style.

SUBMISSION FORMAT
1. Your AI real-world problem solving project report (2000 words) (in pdf format only)
A technical report which describes your problem definition, the postulation of your AI based method for solving it,
together with your data science based methodolgy for completing your experiment (70% of total mark).
2. Working and well-documented code (equivalent to 1000 words of effort) (notebook).
The source code, as solver of your chosen postulated AI problem, which you have implemented with proven
evidence of independent work (30% of total mark). Please zip it if it contains many files and name it Code_AI
project name.zip . If you are using tools to develop your application solver, please accurately explain what
parameters and values have been adopted so that your results can be reproduced. Submit such description as a
separate document and name it Setting_AI project code.doc (or .pdf).

All deliverables should be submitted through Brightspace. There is a box for each deliverable (final report, code) that you
should use for your submission. Please make sure you stick with the naming convention of the submitted files as indicated
above.

The word count limit for this submission is 3,000 words, excluding references, tables, figures, diagrams and
appendices.

If a piece of coursework is not submitted by the required deadline, the following will apply:
1. If coursework is submitted within 72 hours after the deadline, the maximum mark that can be awarded is 50%. If the
assessment achieves a pass mark and subject to the overall performance of the unit and the student's profile for the level, it
will be accepted by the Assessment Board as the reassessment piece. This ruling will apply to written coursework and
artefacts only; This ruling will apply to the first attempt only (including any subsequent attempt taken as a first attempt due to
exceptional circumstances).
2. If a first attempt coursework is submitted more than 72 hours after the deadline, a mark of zero (0%) will be awarded.
3. Failure to submit/complete any other types of coursework (which includes resubmission coursework without exceptional
circumstances) by the required deadline will result in a mark of zero (0%) being awarded.

Exceptional Circumstances
If you have any valid exceptional circumstances which mean that you cannot meet an assignment submission deadline and you
wish to request an extension, you will need to complete and submit the online Exceptional Circumstances Form together with
appropriate supporting evidence (e.g. GP note) normally before the coursework deadline. Further details on the procedure and
links to the exceptional circumstances forms can be found on Brightspace or via

these documents carefully before submitting anything for consideration. For further guidance on exceptional circumstances please
contact your Programme Leader.

Referencing
You must acknowledge your source every time you refer to others' work, using the BU Harvard Referencing system (Author Date
Method). Failure to do so amounts to plagiarism which is against University regulations. Please refer to
https://libguides.bournemouth.ac.uk/bu-referencing-harvard-style for the University's guide to citation in the Harvard style. Also be
aware of Self-plagiarism, this primarily occurs when a student submits a piece of work to fulfill the assessment requirement for a
particular unit and all or part of the content has been previously submitted by that student for formal assessment on the same/a
different unit. Further information on academic offences can be found on Brightspace and from
