RGS Sports Scholarship

Scholarships at Reigate Grammar School are awarded for academic excellence and/or outstanding ability in
Music and Sport. The Headmaster’s Scholarship is available for excellence in an extra-curricular activity such
as art, drama, chess or another discipline. There is no general or “all-rounder” scholarship. The vast majority
of RGS students flourish here with talent, ability, skill and high levels of performance. Scholarships are
awarded to a minority of students. Applicants are requested to apply for a scholarship only where the
assessment criteria are well met.

Academic scholarships are automatically awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster based on academic
achievement in entrance exams (for external candidates) or academic achievement during the First and
Second Form or GCSE results for existing RGS students.

The Application Form (which will be made available via your online admissions portal) should be completed
by or in the words of your son/daughter and submitted to include a reference from an independent referee.
Referees should be prepared in the event that the Admissions Registrar contacts them for further
information. Please note that references should be submitted with the application as we will not proactively
seek them. Before taking a scholarship application forward the school will assess the application
against the criteria below and will write to you to confirm whether your child’s application for a
scholarship will be taken forward.

Only applications which fulfil the criteria below will be considered.

Sports Scholarship

Sports Scholarships are awarded to exceptional candidates at 11+, 13+ and 16+.

Application Criteria

Scholarships are for candidates whom we believe can bring distinction to RGS school sports and who:

• Demonstrate potential to play sport to at least county standard at a regular and sustained level (11+
applicants in Year 6 for entry in Year 7; and 13+ Pre-Test applicants in Year 6 for entry in Year 9)
• Are already representing at least the county in one or more sports at a regular and sustained level
(13+ applicants in Year 8 for entry in Year 9)
• Are fully established with county representation and are most likely to be playing at least one
sport at regional or national standard at a regular and sustained level (16+ applicants in Year 11 for
entry in Year 12)

Successful candidates will be enthusiastic, hardworking and committed to excellence. They will be assessed
for general athleticism, agility, coordination, balance, speed and endurance. They will demonstrate experience
of the impact of coaching and an aptitude to learn and improve quickly from good coaching and are likely
already to have distinguished themselves in sport.

Sports Scholars are likely to be the fastest, most agile and fittest in their year group and in their teams beyond
school. Performance is key, but attitude, skill and aptitude are also very important.

sustained and regular involvement with club level sport with evidence of county aspirations (for sports
where this is in operation).

the county or representative level set up (for sports where this is in operation).
• Year 11 candidates applying for 16+ (2021 entry): Current sustained and regular involvement with
the county, regional or national set up or professional development pathway (for sports where this is in
operation).

Additionally, all candidates will be able to include most of the following:

• Clear timing/distance/ratings or rankings for specific sports where it is available

• Evidence of outstanding contributions to A team school sports teams (usually including being captain or
at least vice-captain in recent years)
• Evidence of outstanding contributions to A teams at outside clubs or non-school based sports teams
(usually including being captain or at least vice-captain in recent years)
• School records in athletics, swimming or other sporting area as appropriate
• Where applicants currently attend junior schools where Sports Scholarships or other prizes are awarded,
the applicant is very likely to already hold a Sports Scholarship or other prize/position of responsibility
• Evidence of other sports related awards
• Evidence of an ability and willingness to fully commit to the main areas of sporting life at RGS, i.e. an
ability to contribute to our main sports

Meeting the above criteria will be important in deciding whether to take an applicant forward to assessment
and again when deciding about awards of Scholarships.

examples of physical literacy that we will be asking candidates to replicate and film at home. All movements
can be carried out in / around the home/garden and will be lots of fun! This task will be able to be accessed
by all candidates including those who may be applying with early specialisation sports or non-mainstream

Filming Advice
As a performer
Please introduce the video with your name and current school
Ideally perform in PE kit (tracksuit and trainers)
Don’t be worried about the camera. The movements are designed to be challenging so do not worry if you
find them hard / cannot do them
DO NOT do movements that cause pain or contradict medical advice

For the person filming

Try and film in landscape not portrait
Try to do the tasks in one take and do not edit. It is ok if your child is looking at our video for a refresh
whilst you are filming them
Ensure performance is filmed in an appropriate space and the performer is appropriately dressed
Please do not use filters
Please keep the camera static and in one place if possible
Sound is not necessary after the introduction

Upload videos using ONE of the following methods:

A) Upload the video to a memory stick and submit the memory stick to school FAO Admissions
B) Send a link to a private YouTube channel where you have uploaded the performance. Please make the
channel private and then send admissions@reigategrammar.org the link so that we can review

For candidates who progress to stage 3

There is nothing we would like more than to be able to welcome children to RGS where in the past, we
have been able to offer children exciting masterclasses and experiences that are aimed at giving an insight
into Sport at RGS. This may be tricky this year. It is our preference to invite the children into school but
it will always be our priority to keep our visitors and school community safe. With that in mind, we will
keep you updated on the format of Stage 3 and are planning for two possibilities. In the event we are
unable to invite candidates into RGS, we will contact you in January with an invitation to A) a virtual
informal chat with a senior member of the Sports Department that will be paired specifically with your
child. Candidates will be asked about their sporting achievements and ambitions or B) a morning at RGS in
small groups where candidates will enjoy a series of fun masterclass sessions and have an informal chat as
detailed in option A.

Sport Scholarship Programme

Once at RGS, Sports Scholars benefit from RGS Athlete Development Program. The Sports department
assigns each Scholar a mentor who is a member of staff who can be the contact point should a scholar need
further support. Motivational talks and Masterclass coaching sessions are offered along with individual
nutrition and fitness development programmes created by our Athlete development officer, supporting them
as they strive to excel in their chosen Sport. All students have the opportunity to be invited to join the
Athlete development sessions as we seek to support all those who are ambitious young sports people.

A word of reassurance!

We would like to take this opportunity to remind families that it is our priority to ensure all children have
access to all opportunities at RGS. An offer that does not include a scholarship does not mean your child
will be disadvantaged. RGS is a school with a culture of excellence and the majority of students at RGS are
not scholars.

We would also like to reassure you that if plans change and evolve, we will ensure you these are
communicated with you.
