When it moves from the stow to the ‘open position, the door rotates out and down, around a bottom hinge. Two counterbalance assemblies dampen the downward movement and a wheel support assembly supports the open door's weight. When it moves from the open to the closed Position, the door rotates up and in around the bottom hinge. A Power-assist motor, controlled from the FWD flight attendants (FAs) panel, assists in closing the door only. The passenger door has proximity sensors and switches and mechanical visual indicators to provide for door indication and warning The passenger door has the following components + Steps + Seal + Power-assisted motor and cable + Counterbalances + Door support wheel + Handrails + Latch mechanism + Handle (outer and inner) + Tension tie assemblies + Pressure valve Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only COMPONENTS SEAL A seal on the inner surface of the outer skin of the door is secured in a track assembly. The seal is installed to prevent air leaks around the door when the fuselage is pressurized. Holes cut in the seal allow the air pressure in the fuselage to push the seal against the structure around the passenger door. STEPS Five fixed steps and two folding steps (one on each end of the door) attach to the door structure. The top folding step, viewed from the cabin interior, hinges to the riser of the nearest fixed step. The top folding step operates when the door opens and closes through the movement of a push rod that connects to the lower post of the forward handrail The bottom folding step, as viewed from the cabin interior, has a step panel and a riser panel. The step panel hinges to the door sill and the riser panel hinges to the door structure. A separate hinge connects the two panels that form the step when the passenger door opens. When the door closes, the two panels fold back COUNTERBALANCE ASSEMBLIES There are two passenger door counterbalances: one on the forward edge and one on the aft edge of the door. Each counterbalance has a gas spring and cables. Cables connect to each of the gas springs and to the fuselage frames around the door. The gas springs compress to provide resistance when the door is lowered, and extend to assist closing the door. TENSION TIE ASSEMBLIES There are two tension tie assemblies installed in the door structure to absorb the longitudinal loads of the fuselage at the door frame. The assemblies have forward and aft adjustable tension fittings that rest against forward and aft tension buttons mounted on the fuselage frame. 52 - Doors 15 July 2009 Pg 52-4 CRIZOO TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL Vent Flap Door Door Cam Handrails “— Outer Handle Tension / Buttons tatenvin 2S poor tatened Indicator >), Green-Mark On Latch-Pin i el Indicator Window (6 Places) te) Inner Handle Ce) N @) Lock Pins} (8) Ciypiea~\\ 2 Locked!” Unick. ~ NO Indicator Tension Fittin n Fitting / \ Green cable / | Marks y Latch Cam reerrnd/_) {ypica) Tension iting ‘ A. The upper posts are connected to the handrail at the top and to a door mounted torque tube at the bottom. The lower posts are also connected to the handrails at the top and to a lower torque tube at the bottom. Connected to each upper post is an operation rod. The operation rod has a quick release pin which may be removed from each top Post to fold the handrails down when the door is open DOOR SUPPORT WHEEL Refer to figure 2. The door support is installed on the upper aft edge of the door (assuming door is closed). thas a hinge base, a spring-loaded lever arm, a wheel, and a retraction cable. The wheel attaches to the lever arm and keeps the door structure off the ground when the door is open. The retraction cable stows the lever arm when the door closes and connects to the aft counterbalance with a bracket and adjusting screw. POWER-ASSIST MOTOR AND CABLE The power-assist motor receives 28 VDC from the 28 VDC ESS BUS, The motor is installed in the door structure and is controlled by a switch on the FLIGHT ATTENDANT panel. A power-assist cable attaches to the motor that lifts the passenger door to the closed position when the motor operates. The cable attaches to the cable attachment fting on the fuselage frame. From the cable attachment fitting, the cable passes around two pulleys and attaches to the power assist motor through a hole in the aft side of the step Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only OPEN LOCK MECHANISM Refer to figure 3 To protect against inadvertent latch pin fuselage skin fouls, an open-lock mechanism is installed about the upper roll latch layshaft. This open-lock mechanism is de-activated with the door ear or in its tailored fuselage opening, If the door is unlatched and moved away from the opening, the open-lock mechanism prevents pin movement, as the assembly is held in the open (retracted) position, the latch pins cannot foul with the skin. 52 - Doors 16 July 2009 Pg 52-6 CRIZOO Figure 3 - Passenger Door Copyright © Bombardier nc. The valve opens when the passenger door is unlatched and remains open until the outer handle is fully engaged in the closed position. This prevents the cabin from pressurizing until the passenger door is secured OUTER HANDLE Refer to figure 4 ‘An outer handle is installed on the exterior of the passenger door (lower center position), It allows the opening of the door from the outside. The outer handle has a trigger plate that releases the handle from its recessed housing through the action of a spring-loaded actuator rod. An integral pivot connects the handle to the latch mechanism. A second pivot operates a locked/unlocked indicator installed on the step beside the pullin handle. The ouler handle also connects internally to a pull-in handle recessed in the riser panel of one of the steps. LATCH MECHANISM Refer to figure 4 The latch mechanism is installed in the door structure between the outer skin and the steps. The latch mechanism secures the passenger door in the closed Position. It has a pull-in lever and a series of interconnected push rods. The pull-in lever pulls the door in towards the fuselage enabling the push rods to lock the door using six lockpins and rotary latches. Green identification strips are visible on each locking pin and rotary latches to indicate that the door is properly secured, 52 - Doors Copyright © Bombardier Inc. The door mechanism is installed in the door structure between the outer skin and the steps. It contains the parts that follow + Push rods + Pivot fittings + Torque tubes with levers + Latch cams + Latch pins + Spring push rod + Pullin levers + Latch lock-box + Mechanism operating handles + Open lock lever The door is latched by the lower door hinge, two latch cams on the upper edge of the door which rotate around fixed pin latches. on the door surround, and by two latch pins on each side of the door which slide to engage latches on the door surround, The two latch cams, located on the bottom of the door, engage with spigots located at the top of the door surround structure. The latch cams contain detents which hold spring loaded pawis. The pawls inhibit unlatching if a link element fails, and prevent the latches from rotating due to vibration when the cabin is unpressurized. The latch cams have green operational marks, Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only which align with adjacent indicators to indicate whether the cams are secure when the door is locked The latch cams are attached to the lower torque tube which also contains the upper lock mechanism and the open lock lever. The open lock lever, located adjacent to the aft latch cam, inhibits the latch pins from extending, until the door is completely closed. As the door closes, the lever presses against an arrester on the door surround structure, allowing the latch cams to rotate fully and the latch pins to extend The two pullin levers help to seal the door as it closes. When the inner or outer handle is moved to the closed position, the pull-in levers rotate around the door cams located on the door surround As they rotate, they cause the door seal to compress against the seal striker. When the door is latched, the pivot fittings extend the four latch pins into the receptacles located on either side of the door. The pivot fittings are provided with rigging pin holes to help with the rigging of the door mechanism. The latch pins are equipped with visible green indicator pins that align with green marks on the door structure when the door is locked To maintain proper lubrication and to weatherproof the mechanisms, each latch pin housing and latch cam bracket is equipped with grease points. 52 - Doors 15 July 2009 Pg 62-20 CRIZOO TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL outer Handle (Ref) — Torque Tube Pushrod . n (Typical SY Lateh Pin (Places) / Torque Tube Pushrod Ss R (Typical) om ZL 2 J Latch Cam “o Y Pustin Tver S Open Lock ® Deca oe Figure 8 - Door Mechanism 52 - Doors Copyright © Bombardier ine. The lock mechanism is part of the latch-box assembly which is considered a line replaceable unit (LRU). The lock mechanism is comprised of two independent locks. The lower lock defined as the lock cam, prevents the mechanism movement by abutment to the male lock lever assembly located in the lock box. The lower lock is activated by the inner or outer handle assemblies. The upper lock places an abutment on the latch cam torque shaft to prevent the latch cam movement during aircraft pressurization cycles. The upper lock is activated by the pressure valve. The lower lock position is indicated with a visual flag indicator and a proximity switch. The upper lock position is indicated with a visual indicator strip and a proximity sensor. Two rigging pin positions are available on the latch lock-box to hold the mechanism in the locked position for rigging of the door mechanism The proximity switch located at the latch lock-box senses whether the lower lock is locked, while the microswitch senses if the door is in the closed and locked position. The proximity switch sends a signal to the EICAS, while the microswitch only sends a closed- and-locked condition to the avionics cooling system and nosewheel steering system To provide an indication of the position of the upper lock, a visual indicator (a machined strip painted green located on the lock unit) is located on the aft side of the door. A proximity sensor located next to the lock provides lock position information to the EICAS When the door is in the closed position, the visual indicator is Visible at the top of the door: when the door is open and fully deployed, the lock and indicator are covered by a plastic cover under the bottom folding step 52 - Doors Copyright © Bombardier Inc. All step noses have a sacrificial wear extrusion to prevent premature wear of the nonslip coating. The first (bottom, when deployed) third and fourth risers are equipped with lights that illuminate the steps in low-light conditions. The second riser contains hand grip on the forward side and the fourth riser (top, when deployed) is equipped with the LOCKED/UNLOCKED door indicator. The folding step at the top is attached with a hinge to the door sill, and the riser panel is attached to the door structure with another hinge. The two panels are connected together with a hinge, and when the passenger door is opened, they make a step across the door sill. The folding step panel at the bottom provides access over the lower part of the panel. A support beam provides weight distribution over the step. A push rod attached to the forward handrail assembly operates the step panel in sequence with the door operating cycle HANDRAILS Each handrail is supported by two torque tubes installed in the steps. They fold down when the passenger door is closed, and they extend when the passenger door is open. Both handrails have upper and lower posts connected to them. Each of the two upper posts has an operation rod connected to it with a quick- release pin. The quick-release pin can be removed to let the handrails fold down with the passenger door open (the quick- release pins must be removed from both the forward and the aft locations). When the passenger door lowers, the handrail ‘operating rods pull the handrails up to the extended position. Copyright © Bombardier Inc For Training Purposes Only POWER ASSISTED MOTOR AND CABLE The door is provided with a power-assist system for opening and closing the door. It is driven by an electrical actuator motor. The power-assist motor winds the power-assist cable around a pulley to pull the passenger door to the closed position. It is installed in the space between the inner skin of the door structure and the steps on the aff side. The power-assist motor is controlled by a switch on the flight attendant panel. A mechanical clutch in the motor controls the opening speed of the door in conjunction with the gas springs The power-assist cable lifts the passenger door when the power- assist motor is operated. One end of the cable is attached to a support fitting on the aft door surround structure SEAL The passenger door seal is mechanically retained around the outer edge of the door structure. The seal is installed to stop air leaks around the passenger door when the fuselage is pressurized. The vent holes cut in the seal let the air pressure in the cabin push the seal against the striker around the passenger door. There are two drain holes at the hinge end of the seal to help drain the moisture from the seal. DOOR SUPPORT-WHEEL ASSEMBLY Refer to figure 11 The door support is a wheel on a lever arm that is attached to the passenger door structure on the aff side, near the top. It extends when the passenger door is opened, and provides the ground support necessary for passenger loading. It also maintains a consistent door step height The support-wheel assembly is controlled by the door gas-springs system. 52 - Doors 16 July 2009 Pg 52-26 CRIZO00 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL 7 a nai @ Figure 11 - Door Support Wheel System Lever Aem 52 - Doors Copyright © Bombardier Inc For Training Purposes Only 15 July 2009 Pg 52-27 CRIZ00 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL PRESSURE VALVE Refer to figure 12. The pressure vaive is a small vent flap in the lower half of the passenger door. It ensures that the internal and extemal pressure equalizes before the door opens. The valve opens when the passenger door is unlocked and stays open until the inner or outer handle is moved to the locked position. The male lock lever in the latch lock-box allows the vent flap actuation lever to release the load on the spring rod and close the valve. The pressure valve also provides the locking force to activate the upper lock. If the valve cannot move freely when the door is opened (due to ice, for example), it is pulled open by a cable that is attached to a lever on the inner handle torque tube. 52 - Doors Copyright © Bombardier Inc. COUNTER BALANCE SYSTEM The passenger-door counterbalance system includes two gas springs (one attached to the forward side of the door structure and one attached to the aft door structure) and cables that connect the gas springs to the fuselage anchor fittings. When the door is opened, the gas springs compress, slowing the door as it deploys. When the door is closed, the gas springs extend, helping toliff the door as it closes STRIKER PLATES The two striker plates, located on either side of the door near the top, guide the door into the correct position as it closes. As the door closes, the striker plates contact with rollers located on the door surround and move the door into the correct horizontal alignment, TENSION TIE-BARS AND FITTINGS ‘The two tension tie bars installed within the structure of the door engage fixed collar fittings on the door surround to negate lateral bending effects on the door opening. The tie-bars are equipped with sockets that extend out of both sides of the door, above and below the lower latch pins. The sockets contact with tension tie- bar buttons located on the door surround OPERATION OPENING THE DOOR To open the passenger door using the outer handle, push through the hinged flap and grab the handle, Pull the handle upward and outward. As the handle moves, the door mechanism unlocks and the vent flap opens. To open the passenger door using the inner handle, pull up on the inner handle located on the forward side of the integral stairs.
