For Training Purposes Only CRIZOO TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER (ELT) GENERAL DESCRIPTION The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) is a radio transmitter that automatically transmits on 121.5, 243.0 MHz and on an optional third frequency of 408 MHz for satellites. This signal allows search aircraft and satellites to locate an aircraft after a crash. There are three (3) models of ELT presently available: + ARTEX/two frequency + ARTEXithree frequency + SOCATA 96 ELTithree frequency The ELT is self-contained and operates independently of the other aircraft systems. The ELT is always armed when it is installed in the aircraft and cannot be disarmed unless it is removed for service. The ELT starts to transmit automatically when activated by an internal actuated g-switch upon impact of a crash, It can also be started manually with a flight compartment remote switch or a switch on the front panel of the ELT. The engine indication and crew alerting system (EICAS) display indication of ELT operation COMPONENTS (ARTEX/2 FREQUENCY ELT) Refer to figure 16 FLIGHT COMPARTMENT REMOTE SWITCH The flight compartment remote switch is located on the lower section of the overhead panel. The two positions of the remote switch are labeled ARM/RESET and ON Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only ANTENNA The antenna is installed on the tail cone. It is connected to the ELT by a coaxial cable that can be disconnected when the ELT is removed for service. ARTEX ELT UNIT (2 FREQUENCY) The ELT is installed in a mounting tray in the tail cone. An end cap installed on the front end of the mounting tray secures the ELT in position with two screws, A molex connector attached to the ELT completes the electrical circuit to the EICAS data concentrator units (DCUs) and to the flight compartment remote switch. It also completes an arming circuit for the internal g-switch. The internal g-switch starts the ELT when there is a sudden deceleration from a crash impact. When the ELT is removed for service disconnecting the Molex connector disarms the g-switch. The ELT operates on an internal alkaline battery pack with no connection to the aircraft electrical system. An ON/OFF switch on its front permits the ELT to be manually operated and tested 25 - Equipment and Furnishings 15 July 2009 Pg 25-34 CRIZO00 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL ELT ANTENNA ~—_ = eur ELT REMOTE ‘SWITCH — - ANTENNA, CABLE @® er ELT MOUNTING / TRAY eae END CAP CONNECTOR ELTON V INDICATOR END CAP. The ELT is always armed and cannot be disarmed while itis installed. In the event of a crash impact, the g- switch starts the ELT when an approx 2.3 g deceleration force is detected. The ELT transmits continuously until the battery is discharged (typically 72 hours) or the ELT is reset. Whenever the unit is transmitting a signal is sent to the DCUs to generate the EICAS caution message ELT ON. The message will remain on for 6 seconds, after the ELT has been reset RESET PROCEDURE (NORMAL) To accomplish a reset procedure following a g-switch activation of the ELT, the remote switch is cycled from the ARM/RESET position, back to the ON position and immediately back to the ARMIRESET position. The ELT stops but stays armed. The reset procedure can also be accomplished by an equivalent OFF-ON- OFF selection of the switch on the ELT unit in the tail cone MANUAL OPERATION For manual operation, the flight compartment remote switch or the switch on the ELT unit is set to the ON position. The ELT transmits continuously until the battery is discharged or the reset procedure is carried out. Whenever the unit is transmitting a signal is sent to the DCUs to generate the EICAS caution message ELT ON. The message will remain on for 6 seconds after the ELT has been reset. If the ELT is started with the flight compartment remote switch, a latching function in the ELT internal circuit keeps the ELT on if the switch is not put back to the ARMIRESET position within 3 seconds. This makes sure that if the crew starts the ELT in an Emergency, it does not stop if the Copyright © Bombardier Inc For Training Purposes Only TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL flight compariment remote switch is accidentally returned to the ARM/RESET position during emergency shut down RESET PROCEDURE (MANUAL) To accomplish a reset procedure following a manual activation of the ELT, the remote switch is cycled from the ON to the ARM/ RESET position, back to the ON position and immediately back to the ARM/RESET position. The ELT stops but stays armed. The reset procedure can also be accomplished by an equivalent ON- OFF-ON-OFF selection of the switch on the ELT unit in the tail cone. Po ELT tests are only to be done in the first 5 minutes of the hour The ELT should not be allowed to transmit for more than 3 seconds. Exceeding this three-second time limit could accidentally start a search and rescue operation. 25 - Equipment and Furnishings 15 July 2009 Pg 25-36 CRIZOO TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL “ARMIRESET UE) ea} * ‘SuRT ELT REMOTE SW UPPER FWDIPANEL. e2t—_p J — es) | CRIRT (vB2) mo fet Le CART ‘aea) Copyright © Bombardier Inc. FLIGHT COMPARTMENT REMOTE SWITCH The remote two-positions switch is installed on the overhead instrument panel in the cockpit. It permits the ELT to be reset or operated manually to perform operational tests from the flight compartment, The two positions are labeled ARM/RESET and ON. ANTENNA The blade antenna is a rigid (fin) dual input type, which is installed on the outer surface of the tail cone below the rudder at FS 863.58. It is connected to the ELT by two (2) coaxial cables that can be disconnected for ELT removal ARTEX ELT UNIT (3 FREQUENCY) The Artex/3 frequency ELT is a dual output type transmitter (one output for the 121.5 / 243.0 MHz frequencies and another for the 406.025 MHz frequency). The unit is housed in a high impact fire- resistant polycarbonate plastic case, which protects the ELT from shocks and harsh environments. It is installed in a mounting tray in the tail cone. The ELT may be operated manually from a flight compartment remote switch installed on the overhead panel or a switch mounted on the front panel of the ELT unit. ELT transmission may start automatically in the event that an impact is sensed by an internal g-switch. The ELT signal transmits swept audio tones that can be heard on any AM receiver in range, that is tuned to the 121.5 or 243.0 Megahertz (MHz) frequencies. Approximately every 50 seconds the 406,025 MHz frequency transmitter sends a phase modulated digital message to the satellite system, while the AM modulation (121.5 / 243.0 MHz frequencies) are momentarily tumed off. The 406.025 MHZ 5 watt transmitter will operate for 24 hours and then shut down automatically, The 121.5 / 243.0 MHz frequency transmitter will Copyright © Bombardier Inc For Training Purposes Only continue to operate until the ELT internal batteries are exhausted (typically after 72 hours). A 12-pin Molex connector attached to a receptacle on the ELT front panel connects the ELT to the EICAS data concentrator units (OCUs), a buzzer and to the remote switch in the cockpit. It also completes an arming circuit for the internal g-switch. When the ELT is removed for service disconnecting the Molex connector disarms the g-switch The ELT operates on an internal lithium manganese dioxide battery pack, which is made of four "D’ size cells. There is no connection to the aircraft electrical system A two-positions switch is located on the front panel of the ELT. ‘When the switch is selected to the OFF position, the ELT is armed for operation by the g-switch. When the switch is selected to the ON position, the ELT start transmitting, BUZZER A buzzer is located near the ELT unit and is a requirement for the certification of the three-frequencies ELT. The buzzer is activated whenever the CLT is transmitting. The buzzer will sound at 140 millisecond intervals, which provide a distinct aural alarm that can be heard outside of the aircraft when the engines are off. The ELT provides the only source of power for the buzzer. 25 - Equipment and Furnishings 16 July 2009 Pg 25-38 CRIZOO ELT REMOTE ‘SWITCH Cory ELT PROTECTIVE | [Sax COVER : r ELT MOLEX CONNECTOR / (P3RT) BNC COAXIAL CONNECTOR (PART) END CAP COAXIAL CABLE END CAP, MOUNTING TY) COAXIAL ‘SCREWS ~/ CONNECTOR MNECTOR conga evrwoserne caste TRAY ® i ) ELT ARTEX UNIT TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL MOLEX CONNECTOR RECEPTACLE ELTON | ELT ANTENNA INDICATOR | CONNECTOR eur LIGHT. | RECEPTACLE swich || ELT ANTENNA i ) CONNECTOR —| RECEPTACLE Figure 18 - Artex/3 Frequency ELT - Components Copyright © Bombardier Inc. The dongle only operates with Artex ELTs that have software versions V133M, V134B, OR V135C installed and are programmed with COSPAS SARSAT 24-bit address long message protocol. For operators that have purchased the option CR23-316, this change will be included. To modify aircraft with the three-frequency unit and required software already installed, use the Bombardier service bulletin 601R-25-186 and the Artex Installation and Operation manual for details INSTALLATION Refer to figure 19. The DGL-1 is attached to the top cover of the ELT. When the ELT is removed, the top cover and the DGL-1 stay with the aircraft. When a new ELT is installed, the DGL-1 automatically reprograms it with the aircraft 24-bit address. An Artex ELT/NAV interface is available for the operators who desire or are mandated to program the GPS/FMS aircraft position in the ELT message. OPERATION The operation of the dongle is automatic. When the aircraft is powered, the DLG-1 verifies that the ELT is programmed with the 24-bit address stored in the dongle. If the addresses match, the DLG-1 shuts down. If they don't, the DLG-1 reprograms the ELT to the address stored in the dongle and then shuts down. Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL 4 a. The aircrafts 24-bit address is set using a series of 24 dip switches installed inside the dongle. The switches are aligned in two rows of twelve. With reference to the connector, the left switch of the top row, away from the connector, represents the most significant bit (MSB). The bottom right switch represents the least significant bit (LSB). The address comprises binary 1's and 0's. When the switches are set to the up position, away from the connector, the bit represents a logic 1. When set to the bottom position, near the connector, the bit represents a logic 0. The 1's are electrical ground and the 0's are electrical open. POWER & TEST Refer to figure 20. The ELT and dongle are powered from CBS-A10, located in JB5 through a switch located on the bracket assembly below the unit. Testing the ELT for the aircraft address requires a 406MHz receiver test set and a cable with 30db attenuation attached to the beacon. The test set decodes the transmission to check for the aircraft address. If the correct 15 digit hex code stored in the ELT's 406MHz transmission is detected, the ELT 15 digit hex code should be noted on the label. Copyright © Bombardier Inc. They are located at the emergency exits to help the crew or passenger to safely evacuate through the emergency exits on the ground or water. COMPONENTS Refer to figure 24. FLIGHT COMPARTMENT ESCAPE ROPE The flight compartment escape rope is a 15 foot (4.57 m) length of nylon webbing. The fuselage end of the rope has a terminal plate that attaches with Hi-lok rivets to the forward right face of the flight compartment bulkhead structure at FS280.00 (at the top right of the crew escape hatch). The rope winds into a coil and is stored in a stowage compartment installed in the bulkhead fascia panel. The stowage compartment has a retainer strap and a plastic cover that is held in place with Velcro tape. The retainer strap prevents the coiled rope from falling out when the cover is removed In an emergency evacuation, the escape rope allows crew members to get down from the aircraft when they exit through the crew escape hatch. The coiled rope is removed from the stowage ‘compartment and positioned outside through the escape hatch opening. Copyright © Bombardier Inc. For Training Purposes Only EMERGENCY EXIT SAFETY LINES There are two emergency exit safety lines. The safety lines are installed in stow trays in the interior fascia panel located aft of each overwing emergency exit. A plastic cover panel is installed on the stow tray with Velcro tape. Each safety line derives from a 140 inch (355.6 cm) length of knotted rope. The fuselage end of the rope has a terminal fitting that attaches with a bolt to the fuselage structure. A snap-hook attaches to the other end of the rope. In an emergency the snap-hook attaches to a clip riveted to the upper wing surface, that extends the rope between the exit and the wing surface to make a handhold. Knots are spaced along the length of the rope to make it easy to hold Dei ‘The snap-hooks are replaced with “D" rings (carabeeners). The safety lines are used in an emergency evacuation to give a handhold for passengers as they go out through the overwing exits to the wing.
