Teacher Information
I love pi day in my middle school math classroom. I love planning different activities and decorating my
classroom. But mostly I love seeing my students get excited about pi day! I hope that this pi day activity will get
your students excited about pi day!

The goal of this activity is to show your students how the irrational number pi has no pattern and is never ending.

Here is how the activity can work:

• Make multiply copies of each digit 0-9 (pg 5-9) and have one copy of the decimal and ellipsis (pg 10).
• Have your students color the digits and have one student color the decimal. It doesn’t matter which digits the
students color. The digits will be put in order after students color them. This can be done as a right away activity
or after students finish their classwork. *You can have your students follow a color key (pg 4) if you want to
make digits easy to identify, but it is not necessary.
• Have a small group of students start to display the digits in your classroom. Your students should cross off the
digits as they are displayed using “The First 300 Digits of Pi” sheet (pg 3). You can display in the hallway or
around your classroom. It is fun to see how far the digits will go. Will your students get enough digits to go
around the entire room? This could be done a few days ahead of pi day, as an activity during pi day, or you
can even have your students work on this during the week of pi.
• After displaying the digits your students completed you should add the three ellipses circle showing the digits
continue.

Other ways to use the digits:

Station Activity: This can also be a fun station activity during pi day. You can have the students at the station add
to the display by coloring the digits in order.

Human Pi Chain: Another fun thing to do with the digits of pi is have your students “be” one of the digits. Assign
each student a digit (in order) of pi, according to however many digits you have. After coloring the digit you can
see if they can correctly arrange themselves as “pi”. You can have them “wear” their digit as a badge
throughout the day.
