Generations of Pride
Building Community Through Stories and Food
WWU Western LGBTQ+, PFLAG Whatcom/Bellingham,
and BQC created a coalition to form an intergenerational
program. We connect and support elder and younger adult
members of the LGBTQ+ community through food and
storytelling. A research study conducted by a team in the
psychology department at WWU demonstrated the importance
and need for young adults in the queer community to connect since they
may lack queer elders in their lives, have been rejected by their families of
origin, and are not exposed to positive queer models in mainstream media.
We connect all ages of LGBTQ+ adults through monthly potlucks on the last
Wednesday of the month. All ages 18+ are welcome and encouraged to
attend! Sometimes a person serves as an elder and younger in the same
discussion circle. Elders are encouraged to bring the food so youngers can
be treated to a home-cooked meal. No cost to attend.
Potlucks are scheduled for the last Wednesday of each month
and held at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center. To join this

BQC Community Center Space Opening Soon!
Finally! The BQC will have a gathering space in the Downtown Arts District
of Bellingham! The BQC is partnering with several organizations to create
the “Q Center”; a place where the LGBTQ+ community can connect,
socialize, learn, and volunteer to support our community. We plan to start
using the BQC center for our affinity groups and meetings later in May. Our
center will operate with the help of lots of volunteers so we can be open as
many hours as possible during the week. Several input sessions were hosted
in March to get ideas and suggestions from our members. A BQC
Community Center Advisory Group is forming now and will oversee the
planning and operations of the Center. We will share more details about the
location, opening, and how to volunteer soon. Email

In the three bodybuilding competitions that I participated in, two Night of
Champions, and one Big Sky Champions shows, (Ribic Productions), I tried
different approaches to my diet, and alcohol intake. For the first show, I cut
down on my alcohol consumption drastically. I did not consume beer, but I
continued to enjoy a glass of wine occasionally.

This first show, Night of Champions 2017, was my best show. My weight and
body fat were lower than they had ever been. The second show in 2018 was my
worst. I continued to drink beer in moderation during my prep. While my
weight lowered, my body fat was far more stubborn than the first show. This
was in part due to diet, but largely due to alcohol consumption. I found a far
better balance in 2019, though that stubborn belly fat from beer the year
before was still there.

of absence for my second cross country trip in 1993, my boss jokingly said
that he got the note and “pinned it to the dart board.”
They did grant my leave of absence in 1993 as well so I have been coast to
coast twice in one lifetime. I've also been on other long trips such as in 1998
when I got as far as Michigan on the Great Lakes. I’ve biked around in the
Pacific Northwest and gone several times down the west coast. In 2003 I got
as far as San Diego, CA.
Bicycle travel fits into my lifestyle as I never wanted to raise a family, have
pets or own a car. Those expenses and obligations can prevent people from
using the time the way I did. Bicycling is an outgrowth of my somewhat low
profile lifestyle.
Now that I'm retired, I still do bike touring though not as far as in earlier
years. I have quite a few reasons why long trips are less appealing now than
back then. I'm older, but bicycling, itself still comes fairly easy for me.
Camping is another story. I find it easier to sleep in motel rooms these days.

One of the reasons I no longer camp is that it is getting harder to find bicycle trip across America.

are maxed out with giant RVs unless they are the rare breed of campground
that has special sites for bicyclists. These sites are often called hiker biker
sites. They don't require reservations. Motels seem more available and one
can reserve just a day, or a few hours in advance using a smartphone.
Some of the booking apps are confusing, but one can often book directly on
the motel web site. My bankcard has its own in house booking app which
seems less complicated than the big commercial sites. One problem with the

commercial apps is all the advertising they throw at you. Advertising can
make things confusing.
Last summer, as I was riding in eastern Washington, I realized I had booked
the wrong day. Making the correction was confusing. Eventually I called the
booking company and had to sit through a bunch of ads. They were trying to
