LAYOUT OF AN ASSIGNMENT

Tutorial letter 101 of each module that you have registered for should provide some
guidelines with regard to the layout of assignments. Ensure that you meet those
requirements.
If no such guidelines are provided, you can prepare the assignment according to the
following:
 The first page can be a title page on which you have the name of the module,
module code and the assignment number, followed by your name and student
number.
 The declaration of your own work on a separate page.
 The table of contents on a separate page.
 Contents of the assignment commencing with the Introduction and ending
with the Conclusion.
 Sources consulted on a separate page.
 Addenda (if applicable).
Remember that the content of your assignment must also be presented according to
specific technical or presentation guidelines.

Take note:

 The declaration of own work submitted should be presented at the front of your
assignment – either directly before or directly after your table of contents.

 The table of contents and the declaration should be each on a separate page.
Note:

 The body of your assignment (usually commencing with the introduction, if

required) follows the table of contents on a separate page.
 All the pages of the body of your assignment should be numbered (at the top, as
in this case, or at the bottom of the page).
 The headings in the body of your assignment should correspond exactly to those
indicated in your table of contents.
 In-text referencing is used in the body of your assignment. For example, in the
case above the following two references are used:

“mines whenever deaths occur” According to Dolphin (2005:173),

Take note:

 After the conclusion of your assignment, your list of sources follows on a separate
page.
 The sources are given alphabetically by author name.

Once you have ensured that the assignment is complete, refer to the checklist for
