Activity

Let us have a short activity about the

Mathematics Curriculum in the
Intermediate Grades. I will show you a
picture and I will ask some questions
based on what you have observed in the
picture.

.
Analysis

What is the picture all about?

The picture is all about the Conceptual
Framework of the Mathematics
What are the words that you can see in Curriculum in the Intermediate Grades.
the picture?
Problem solving, critical thinking,
What else can you observe in the picture? content, skills and progress, values and
attitudes, mathematical tools,
Have you observed that the words Critical contexts, etc.,
Thinking and Problem Solving are in the
center of the conceptual framework?
(student’s may vary)
Why do you think those words are located
in the center of the conceptual
framework?
Yes mam
For us to know the answer, kindly read
Mr/Ms. _____

(student’s answer may vary)

What are the words that surround the

words critical thinking and problem
solving?

Definitely! Why do you think those words

are connected with critical thinking and
problem solving?
The words that surround critical thinking
and problem solving are Experiential and
Situated Learning, Reflective learning,
For us to know the answer, kindly read Constructivism, Cooperative Learning
Mr/Ms. _____ and Discovery and Inquiry-based
Learning.

(student’s answer may vary)

Those words that you have mentioned are

the important principles and theories that
we should always consider in teaching
and learning mathematics.

Experiential and Situated Learning – It is

more on experience

Reflective Learning- It is a theory where

the students will reflect at the end of the
discussion.

Constructivism – A theory where the

knowledge is constructed when the
learner is able to draw ideas from his/her
experiences

Cooperative Learning- Is the ways where

students learned when they are working
with their fellow learners and engaged in a
shared task.

Discovery Learning and Inquiry Based

learning- The students learn when they
make use of personal experiences to
discover facts, relationships, and
concepts.

We will now proceed to the content of this

Conceptual framework. What are the
content of the Mathematics under
intermediate grades according to the
conceptual framework?

The topics of Mathematics in Intermediate

Grades will only revolve from those
topics.

For us to better understand, let us look at

the key stage standards per grade of the
intermediate students.

Mr/Ms._______ Kindly read the Key

Stage standard for Grade 4.

Thank you Mr/Ms.___________.

Numbers and Number Sense,
Measurement, Geometry, Patterns and
Algebra and Statistics and Probability.
Mr/Ms._______ Kindly read the Key
Stage standard for Grade 5.

Thank you Mr/Ms.___________.

Mr/Ms._______ Kindly read the Key

Stage standard for Grade 6.

Thank you Mr/Ms.___________.

What have you noticed with the key
stage standards of each grade level?

Based on the key stage standards of

each grade level, we can notice that
there is a spiraling progression design
in the curriculum standards. Those
three grade levels have all the same
lesson but they differ on the degree of
difficulty.

(student’s answer may vary)

Abstraction

What are the goals of the curriculum of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Mathematics under intermediate grades?

What are five content areas in the

Curriculum of Mathematics under
Intermediate Grades?
Application

I will group you in to 4 groups. Each group

will enter in a breakout room to talk and
discuss with their group mates.

I have here 10 word problems and (student’s answer may vary)

equations. Each group will identify
whether it belongs to Numbers and
Number Sense, Measurement, Geometry,
Patterns and Algebra and Statistics and
Probability.

Each group will have one representative

to answer the question by raising their
hand and the one who got first and have
the correct answer will get the point. The
group who got the highest points will have Geometry
an additional score in the quiz.
1. Manuel bought a balloon (that is a
perfect sphere) with a radius of 2. He
wanted his balloon to be bigger, so he
blew 22 big breaths of air into the balloon.
Each big breath increased the balloon's Measurement
radius by 1 cm,.
What is the ratio of the current volume of
the balloon to the original volume of the Probability
balloon?

2. The perimeter of a rectangle is 128 centimeters

and the length is 47 centimeters. Find the width of
the rectangle.
Numbers and Number Sense
3. In a class of 40 students, 8 are in the
drama club and 12 are in the art club. If a
student is selected at random, what is the Patterns
probability that the selected student in the
drama club?

4. Rosalind made 364 donuts. She put 8

donuts into each box. How many boxes of
donuts were there? How many donuts Geometry
were left over?

5. David arranged loaves of bread on 6

shelves in the bakery. He put 1 loaf on the
top shelf, 3 loaves on the second shelf,
and 5 loaves on the third shelf. If he Numbers and Number Sense
continues this pattern, how many loaves
will he put on the 6th shelf?

What do you think is the importance of (student’s answer may vary)

Curriculum in our daily living?

As a future educator, Curriculum is very

important because it will be our basis of
the lessons that we need to teach, the
materials that we need, principles and
theories that we should apply and most
importantly are the goals that we should
achieved in teaching and learning.
