LESSON 1 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

FOLLOWING JESUS
INTRODUCTION
JESUS: "COME, FOLLOW ME" (MATTHEW 4:19A)
When Jesus said, "Follow me," it was basically an invitation to be one of His disciples. This
phrase was a customary expression of a rabbi or teacher when inviting an individual to learn His
teachings, practices, and way of living. To us modern-day Christians', following Jesus means not
just a one-time decision but rather a lifetime commitment to follow Christ in every aspect of life.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FOLLOW JESUS DAILY AND FOR LIFE?

To follow Jesus means simply to accept His invitation to be His _____________.
Following Jesus is a _____________ decision; _____________ life, this decision leads to spiritual
_____________, shapes moral _____________, encourages personal _____________, and instills a
sense of _____________. Take a look at these verses as examples of when Jesus called His
disciples:

Matthew 4:18-22
¹⁸As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his
brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹"Come, follow
me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." ²⁰At once they left their nets and
followed him.
²¹Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.
They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, ²²and
immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Mark 2:13-17
¹³Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach
them. ¹⁴As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth.
"Follow me," Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

When these men accepted the invitation to follow Jesus, it meant that they would have to
_____________their old lives and live in accordance with the life and _____________of their Rabbi
for the rest of their lives. Following Jesus means fully _____________the old life and taking up a
new life with Him.

LESSON 1 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

FOLLOWING JESUS
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES ON FOLLOWING JESUS
Below are biblical principles that guide disciples to shape their _____________, _____________,
and actions in accordance with life and the _____________of Jesus Christ. Embracing these
principles builds a deeper _____________with God and helps manifest Christ's _____________.
Some principles include:
• _____________- Jesus taught that faith in Him is the means of receiving salvation. Believing in
Him and His words is essential in following Him. (John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9)
• _____________- Jesus emphasized that love has to be evident in a disciple, which includes
loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind and loving your neighbor as yourself. (John 13:35,
Matthew 22:37-39).
• _____________- Acknowledging and turning away from sin are crucial aspects of following
Jesus (Acts 3:19, Luke 13:2-5).
• _____________- Jesus taught obeying His commandments as an expression of love for Him and
the importance of fully surrendering to the will of God (John 14:15; Mark 14:36).
• _____________- Jesus stressed the importance of prayer to connect with God and foster a
closer relationship with Him (Matthew 6:9-13, Philippians 4:6-7).
• _____________- As Jesus modeled a life of service, He calls His followers to serve selflessly and
even sacrificially (Mark 10:45, Luke 9:23-24).

WHY FOLLOWING JESUS DAILY AND FOR LIFE IS CRITICAL TO ONE'S GROWTH
Devoting oneself to following Jesus daily and throughout life is essential for a believer's
_____________. While the journey often starts with a daily _____________, the cumulative effect
over time shapes spiritual _____________. The steadfastness in this pursuit gradually reveals
greater _____________as the divine relationship is being cultivated.
In Luke 9:23, Jesus said, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way,
take up your cross daily, and follow me." The importance of taking up the cross daily signifies
that a disciple should come and share in Jesus' burden and, in the process. gets to understand
the weight of this burden more.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OBEYING THE BIBLE AND BEING IN STEP WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
Obeying God's _____________, the Bible, and being in _____________with the Holy Spirit's
guidance are two essentials of following Jesus. Like the two wings essential to the flight of an
eagle, these two are crucial to following Jesus.

LESSON 1 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

FOLLOWING JESUS
THE WORD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
John 14:15-21 (NIV)
¹⁵"If you love me, keep my commands. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
advocate to help you and be with you forever— ¹⁷ the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him,
because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in
you. ¹⁸ I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ¹⁹Before long, the world will not see me
anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. ²⁰ On that day, you will realize that I
am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. ²¹ Whoever has my commands and keeps them
is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them
and show myself to them."

Jesus emphasized the _____________of both the Word and the Spirit in the lives of His followers. In John
14:15-21, He reassured the disciples that He wouldn't abandon them, promising the _____________of the
Holy Spirit once He was no longer physically present. He also reiterated the importance of
_____________His teachings and commands.

In following Jesus, every disciple should:

Keep and _____________the Word of God as authority for righteous living. Submitting to what the
Word says results in obedience to Jesus
Be in _____________with the Holy Spirit in every _____________of life or follow His leading as He
guides us.

COMMITMENTS YOUTH CAN MAKE TO FOLLOW JESUS

Following Jesus and growing in a relationship with Him involves various aspects that involve spiritual,
personal, and practical disciplines. Here are some commitments a young person can consider making:
REGULAR _____________- Commit to developing a consistent prayer life, talking to God, expressing
gratitude, seeking guidance, and spending time in His presence.

_____________ STUDY - Commit to reading and studying the Bible regularly. This involves
understanding Scripture, applying its teachings, and seeking to know Jesus more through His Word.

_____________- Commit to be surrounded by fellow believers who can support, encourage, and be
accountable to uphold righteousness before God.

_____________ INVOLVEMENT - Commit to actively participate in a local church by attending

worship gatherings, joining in small groups, and engaging in church activities.

_____________- Commit to serving others, following Jesus' example of love and compassion. Look
for opportunities to serve in your community, showing Christ's love through actions and words.

THE DNA OF JESUS' FOLLOWERS AND

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NXA'S DNA
INTRODUCTION
The DNA is like a tiny instruction manual inside the human cells with the _____________ guiding
how living things grow, work, and make new copies of themselves. This code is
_____________down from parents to their children, making it crucial for life's variety and ongoing
existence.

When someone says that a Christian youth has the DNA of Christ's disciples, they are likely using
a _____________ to express the idea that the individual embodies the _____________, values, and
behaviors associated with the _____________of Jesus Christ. In the NXA context, this means
adopting a _____________that reflects the teachings of Jesus and the _____________found in the
Bible.

PRINCIPLES THAT GUIDE CHRISTIANS IN DEVELOPING THEIR DNA

Having the DNA of Christ's disciples expresses a _____________to living out Christ's teachings
and values, with the ultimate goal of becoming more _____________Jesus in thought, word, and
deed.

Several principles can guide the NXA youth to develop the DNA of Christ, guiding them in their
faith, growth, service to others, and the mission of sharing the message of Christ. These are
_____________principles for a Christian's _____________of life.

All these principles revolve _____________Christ simply because all of Christian life is about
Christ. Everyone who professes their faith in Christ should "have the same mindset as Christ
Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). Eventually, to _____________in our Christian life is to become
_____________ Christ. To this end, Paul says, "He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and
teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ"
(Colossians 1:28).

LESSON 2 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

THE DNA OF JESUS' FOLLOWERS AND

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NXA'S DNA
WHAT THEN IS NXA’S DNA?
In NXA, the DNA stands for three important _____________ that every young person should make
_____________ and for _____________.
_____________. These practices are actually disciplines that every young person should develop
daily. With God's help, the individual youth exerts deliberate efforts to experience or encounter
God daily through the DNA.
_____________. No one gets over these disciplines if they are committed to Jesus for life. Because
seeking-knowing-growing-serving-sharing Christ and, eventually, becoming like Christ is a lifetime
process, every young person should do the DNA throughout their lifetime.

Learning Task

Ask: What do you think would

happen if we neglect about our
The three essential disciplines every Assignment?

NXA youth should develop are:

1 _____________. During this personal time alone with God, the youth expresses to himself that
God is Priority One. Thus, they begin the day with a "quiet revolution" where they can
worship the Lord before being distracted by the busyness of the day. They set aside time to
reflect on the Word and ask for guidance and direction from the Holy Spirit.

2 ____________. This vital connection or link is the discipleship group. Some churches call it
"cell group" or "growth group." However the local assembly calls it, the Nexus is essential to
developing relationships with Christ and others. Here in this caring community, young people
find the necessary connections to help them grow in Christ and with other Christians.

3
_____________. This essential leads young people to actively participate in fulfilling the Great
Commission and developing a missional lifestyle. As an expression of loving God with all
their heart (Great Commandment), every Christian should also fulfill the Great Commission of
"going and making disciples of all nations" by sharing Chris's love first with their friends or
those around them. This essential also helps young people build a "missional lifestyle," which
means they develop the love and compassion to share Christ's love with people across the
street and worldwide.

LESSON 3 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

DEVOTION (PRIORITY ONE)

INTRODUCTION
In a world consumed by noise and constant movement, we often overlook the immense power that lies
within _____________ reflection and trust. This lesson focused on cultivating personal _____________
through embracing moments of stillness in the “secret” place.

BIBLICAL SUPPORT TO DOING THE DEVOTION

The Lord Jesus Christ showed us how to _____________. He was very close to the Father and practiced
spiritual disciplines. He always made time to _____________ in a _____________ place, even when he was
busy with his ministry. He knew what was most important to him – He knew His _____________ ONE.

Matthew 6:6 says, "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to
your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
you."

Matthew 6:9-13 teaches us to pray like this: "Our Father in heaven, may your name be
honored, may your kingdom come, may your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us today our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we also forgive those who sin against
us. And do not let us fall into temptation, but rescue us from the evil one."

The Lord wants us to be close to Him and to give him our _____________ attention and energy. He wants
to bless us and restore our _____________.

Finding Strength Through the "Quiet Revolution"

Let us remember these words from the prophet Isaiah as we start our journey through this "Quiet
_____________." Isaiah 30:15 testifies, "You will be strong when you are quiet and trust God.”

Doing the devotion can be challenging because we are not used to being quiet and still, even thinking
that nothing is happening in _____________. Also, our fast-paced world pushes us to always be in a hurry.
Many people are always in a hurry, but they are actually lost, running fast without thinking or feeling. No
wonder many people are confused, hopeless, and tired because they are stuck in a cycle of doing things
and looking good, but they are not happy or satisfied. Carl Jung says, "Hurry is not of the devil; it is the
devil." It is time for us to stop running and start walking with God.

In a world where being loud and expressing yourself is more important than being silent and listening,
we need to be different and realize that we can find God's _____________ in our _____________ time with
Him.
10
LESSON 3 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

DEVOTION (PRIORITY ONE)

This "quiet revolution" is…
…for those who understand what matters most, even if it seems strange.
…our way of saying no to the world's problems and yes to God's solutions
…our way of answering God's invitation to rest and live in his presence.

Remember that the reason for all these spiritual disciplines is to have a deepening _____________ with
God and to grow closer to him. Christianity is not a sprint; it is a relationship. The Lord is calling His
people to join Him in the _____________ place where He is.
Will you answer his call to a revolution? A spiritual revolution. This is NXA's quiet _____________.

LESSON 3 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

DEVOTION (PRIORITY ONE)

DEVO BASIC
Let's start with the basics and let this be our lifestyle of enjoying God's presence.
1. _____________ your heart to meet God. Calm your heart and worship him.
2. _____________ the Word. Read the scripture. Read the passage carefully and listen to what God is
saying to you through the verses. Ask yourself these questions:
What? What can I discover about God from this passage?
So what? Why does this truth matter to me? What is God's purpose in telling me this?
Now what? How can I put this into practice in my life today? How can I live out the truth it
teaches?
3. _____________ your love and dependence on God. Pray, praise, repent, ask and yield.
4. _____________ a journal. Write down God's message to you and how you need to apply it to your
everyday life. You can meditate on it and remember God's Word.

DEVO JOURNAL FORMAT

Use this format or your own to write in your journal.

DURATION: 20-30 MINUTES EVERY DAY

VERSE: Read one verse or passage from the Bible.

REFLECTION: Write what the Lord teaches you through His words. Answer these
questions:
What? What do I learn about God from this verse or passage?
So what? Why is this important for me? What does God want me to know?
Now what? How do I apply this to my life today? How do I obey God's Word?

PRAYER: Praise God for His Word and write your prayer requests for yourself and
others.

12
LESSON 3 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

DEVOTION (PRIORITY ONE)

Sample Journal
DATE: December 22, 2023

VERSE: Psalm 23:1-6 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in
green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me
along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You
prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

REFLECTION:
What? I learn that God is my shepherd, who takes care of me, provides for me, protects
me, and leads me. He is always with me, even in the most difficult situations. He gives
me peace, joy, and hope. He is good and loving to me, and he wants me to be with him
forever.

So what? This is important for me because it reminds me of who God is and what
he has done for me. It shows me that God is not distant or indifferent, but he is
personal and involved in my life. He knows me, he cares for me, and he wants the
best for me. He is the source of everything I need and more.
Now what? I need to apply this to my life by trusting God and following his
guidance. I need to rest in his presence and enjoy his blessings. I need to not be
afraid of anything, but to rely on his power and protection. I need to praise him and
thank him for his goodness and love. I need to live for him and seek his will.

PRAYER: Lord, thank you for being my shepherd. Thank you for taking care of me,
providing for me, protecting me, and leading me. Thank you for being with me, even in
the darkest valley. Thank you for giving me peace, joy, and hope. Thank you for your
goodness and love that follow me all the days of my life. Thank you for inviting me to
dwell in your house forever. Help me to trust you and follow you. Help me to rest in your
presence and enjoy your blessings. Help me to not be afraid of anything, but to rely on
your power and protection. Help me to praise you and thank you for all that you are and
all that you have done. Help me to live for you and seek your will. In Jesus' name, amen.

LESSON 3 (PARTICIPANTS’ NOTES)

DEVOTION (PRIORITY ONE)

COMMITMENTS YOUTH CAN MAKE TO GROW IN THE HABIT OF DOING DEVOTION
HOW TO GROW IN THE HABIT OF DOING DEVOTION
Devotion is the expression of our love and loyalty to God, who created and saved us through His
Son, Jesus Christ. It is important to do Devotion regularly because it helps us grow in our faith, learn
more about God and His Word, and align our thoughts and actions with His will for ourselves and for
the kingdom.

One way to assess our Devotion is to rate our prayer life from 0 to 10 (0 is the lowest, 10 is the highest).
How often do we pray to God? How sincere and honest are we in our prayers? How do we listen and
respond to God's voice? How do we see God's answers to our prayers?

To grow in the habit of doing Devotion, we need to make some commitments and follow them
consistently. Here are commitments that a NXA can make:
Set aside a specific time and place to read the Bible every day and meditate on a verse or a
passage that speaks to us. We can use a reading plan, a devotional book, or a journal to guide
us in our Bible study.
Pray to God, thank Him for His blessings, and ask Him for guidance and strength for the day
ahead. We can use a prayer list, a prayer partner, or a prayer app to help us in our prayer life.
Seek mentorship from a pastor or youth leader who is a godly and wise person. Such leader/s
can teach us how to apply the Bible to our lives, deal with the challenges and temptations we
face as young people, and encourage us to discover and use our gifts and talents for God's
glory.
Live out our faith in our daily life by applying the Word we learned from reading the Bible. We
can show our faith by being honest, kind, generous, forgiving, and respectful to others.

DEVOTION PRACTICUM ACTIVITY

For the next few minutes. Practice Priority One using the passage Matthew 7:24-27.
Use a journal to write your reflections.

ASSIGNMENT
Apply Priority One during this training. Use the passages and prepare to share your reflections on
the next meeting.

for the _____________ group. It is a _____________ community that connects people to Christ and
disciples the Nextgens. It is patterned from the passage, Acts 2:42-47 which shows what a NEXUS
values.
Acts 2:42-47
⁴²They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of

by the apostles. ⁴⁴All the believers were together and had everything in common. ⁴⁵They sold
property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. ⁴⁶Every day they continued to
meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with
glad and sincere hearts, ⁴⁷praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord
added to their number daily those who were being saved.

world and participating in God’s move of reconciling people to Himself.

WHAT IS THE GREAT COMMISSION?

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

¹⁸Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
¹⁹Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

This Bible passage, famously known as the Great _____________, is one given by Jesus to His disciples after His
victorious resurrection from the dead. To this day, He still commissions His disciples to go and make disciples of
every tribe and tongue.

In verse 18, Jesus declared that all _____________has been given to Him. Imagine the context of this declaration.
Jesus conquered death by resurrecting; He fulfilled the _____________of the Father to provide salvation to
anyone who will believe. He has the _____________to command, and we have the _____________to obey.

Jesus’ command is straightforward and compelling: "Go and make disciples of all nations."

The Greek phrase for "all nations" is panta ta ethne, which refers to all of the ethnicities or people
_____________of the world (Global Frontier Missions). This implies that Jesus did not just come to save one
tribe or one chosen nation. He came for _____________of them.
Joshua Project data shows 4,848 Frontier People Groups with a total population of 2,007,922,000 who have
almost no chance of _____________about Jesus from someone in their own people group.
If we are to obey this command from our Lord, then we need to do something about the 4,848 people
groups who have yet to be discipled. That is a lot.

Praise Jesus, His command comes with a great promise! He gives an additional reason for confidence,. "And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (v. 20). As we dive deeper into this lesson about the
Great Commission, missions, and its impact on our being NXA, let us never forget that His _____________ is with
us. The Great Commission comes with great challenges, but we also have a great _____________, our Lord with
us.

THE NXA YOUTH’ ASSIGNMENT: “ACROSS THE STREET AND AROUND THE WORLD”
Because the Great Commission is extensive, _____________NXA youth should help fulfill it in loving obedience to
our Lord who gave this to all His believers. NXA believes that there is no better time to lead young person to
commit to the Great Commission but _____________.

By helping them grow in the Assignment, every NXA youth will grow in their love of Christ by _____________the
Great Commission. The song by Steve Green, The Mission, provides a strategy to help young people: “across the
street or around the world, the mission is still the same, proclaim and live the truth in Jesus’ name.”

“Across the _____________”: To grow in the Assignment, NXA should help every young person to
live out and proclaim the gospel to people around them. NXA ministry exerts efforts to mobilize
young people to commit to reach out to their classmates or workmates. This is why the NXA Campus
and NXA Pro are crucial to the NXA youth, as these propel them to reach out out to friends and
those near them.

“Around the _____________”: Every NXA youth should commit to helping reach the panta ta ethne
by developing a heart for the nations. Wahtever their life vocation would be, they must include it in
their assignment to feel God’s heart for the nations.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT GOD'S HEART FOR THE NATIONS?
Essential to helping the NXA youth grow in their Assignment is helping them understand God’s heart for
the nations. Here are some insights from the Bible about God’s heart for the nation:

HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE DEVELOP A MISSIONAL LIFESTYLE

Knowing that God truly has a heart for nations, what is our response? How do we do our part in fulfilling
the Great Commission in our time today and as NXA?

To commit to sharing the Gospel across the street and around the world, every NXA youth should
develop a missional _____________. Developing a missional lifestyle means having the heart for the
_____________ and a strong _____________ for mission. This is called a lifestyle because this is a way of
life.

To grow in the assignment, it is helpful for every NXA youth to understand the five _____________
identified by the PGCAG-World Missions Department. These roles describe how NXA youth can be a
part of making disciples of every tribe across the world:

Considering all these roles, here's the challenge: Which role is God calling you to do, so that every tribe
will worship Him as mentioned in Revelation 7:9-10?

Why is it important to commit to having a missional lifestyle?

One does not have to be a goer to have a missional lifestyle (unless God is calling you to be one!). It is
important, however, to use this life that we have, not just to enjoy God's blessings and serve Him, but
also to accomplish the Great Commission. Why?
Because of the _____________ who commanded it. Jesus Himself gave the Great
Commission. If we call Him our Lord, then we should obey whatever He commands.
Because of the _____________behind it. As we have seen in John 3:16, God loved the world
so much that giving His only Son was worth it.
Because of the _____________ of His _____________. We are not alone in this! We have our
Lord, not just commanding us, but also with us every step of the way.

MISSION OPPORTUNITIES
“ACROSS THE _____________”
NXA continuously reach out to other youth especially through the outreach programs of The NXA
Campus to students and the NXA Pro to young adults. To develop in the Assignment, every NXA
youth must commit to sharing the Gospel to their classmates or workmates.

ASSIGNMENT: PRACTICUM
Within the NXA network are opportunities that help young people grow in their understanding of their
Assignment, primarily through the NXA arn, the NXA Expeditions. Below are some of the opprtunites
provided by the NXA Expeditions.

Training is provided by NXA Expeditions through the NXA Expeditions Classroom and Expeditions
Classroom Module.
NXA Expeditions Classroom provides more in-depth lectures and workshops that aim to
prepare young people for world missions. It is a preparatory and necessary course for those
who want to participate in future Expeditions Trips, locally and internationally. It also
provides foundational knowledge for a life dedicated to the Great Commission together
with practical aspects of going on Expeditions Trips and, later on, missionary journeys of
your own.
Expeditions Classroom Module is a written material based on the NXA Expeditions
Classroom.

Wave after Wave: After undergoing NXA Expeditions Classroom, teams are formed and deployed to
other nations for a 2-week missions exposure trip.

Examples during 2023: Teams Sri Lanka and Indonesia - first Wave
