Lesson The Philippine Festivals

1 and Theatrical Forms

The Philippines has numerous festivals that are mostly religious in origin, The
Spaniards handed this tradition to us to commemorate the feast day of patron saints,
celebration of life and thanksgiving. Most towns have their own festivals in addition
to the national ones. Filipino hospitality is legendary and quite evident at festival
time. Festivals in the Philippines offer people in every region a chance to exhibit their
rich culture and pay tribute to their ancestors, history, and patron saints. Festivals
are colourful, big, and celebrated with a lot of pride and a lot to showcase.

The following are some of the famous festivals celebrated in various places in
the Philippines.

4
PHILIPPINE FESTIVAL

AKLAN – ATI-ATIHAN
a festival held every third Sunday of January in honour of the Sto. Niño in the
island and town of Kalibo, Aklan

Image 3: Elisolidum. A Woman At The Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival, Philippines. Photograph. Wikimedia Commons. February 18, 2020. Accessed January 27,
2022. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_Woman_At_The_Kalibo_Ati-Atihan_Festival,_Philippines.jpg

It shows the Ati of the Negrito in the island who have black and curly hair.
People apply black paint on their faces and perform in the parade. They wear
colourful and elaborated costumes. This festival showcases tribal dances and music.
It is accompanied by indigenous musical instruments that make the festival more
attractive.

“Hala bira!” is the shout associated with ati-atihan festival. Most of the
Filipino, know this shout, but the shout did not originate here. The festivals recall
how the Moro raiders attack Panay. The Moros used the term “Hala bira!” that means
“Hit the invaders!”. The black color in their faces symbolizes the gunpowder used in
the battle where they look like black Ati. The natives believe that their patron, the
Sto. Niño saved the locals from the Moros.

DAVAO – KADAYAWAN

Davao City’s celebration of good harvest. It is a yearly festivity held in Davao

City during the third week of August. It is this time of the year when the Davaoeños
celebrate good life and bountiful harvest. It is a symbol of their thanksgiving for the
gift of nature as shown in the city’s bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables. It also
showcases the rich cultural heritage not just of the Davao region’s Lum ad or ethnic

5
groups, but also Mindanao’s ethnic group that make up the rich cultural heritage of
the island, unlike most fiestas in the Philippines, Kadayawan is not a religious
celebration in nature. In pre-colonial times, the ethnic tribes of Davao lived in
harmony with one another, and Kadayawan is an attempt to showcase the same
unity between diverse cultures. During the festival, the indigenous tribes of Davao
City can share their respective dances and thanksgiving rituals. They give thanks to
“Manama,” or the Supreme Being, and “Bulan,” our moon goddess. They celebrate
life; they thank the divine for the blessings of nature, and for the bountiful harvest.

MARINDUQUE – MORIONES FESTIVAL

Most of Marinduque Moriones music is fast in tempo that encourages body

movements. They used big drums and other percussion instruments to form music
that suits the festival.

Moriones is an annual and colorful festivity during Holy Week on the island
of Marinduque. These men and women in costumes and with masks replicating the
garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks. Morion means “mask”
or “visor”, a part of the medieval Roman armor that covers the face.

CEBU – SINULOG FESTIVAL

A yearly celebration every third Sunday of January in Cebu City where Sto.
Niño is the center of the festivity. Sinulog came from a Cebuano word “sulog” which
means “like water current movement” that describes the forward and backward
step of the Sinulog dance. People dance gracefully to the rhythm of drums, trumpets,
and gongs. This festival dramatized the arrival of the Spaniards and the presentation
of the Sto. Niño to the Queen.

BICOL – IBALONG FESTIVAL

Ibalon is an ancient settlement located in present day Magallanes, Sorsogon.

It is renowned as the first Spanish settlement in the island of Luzon.

It is celebrated in Legazpi City, Albay. The Ibalong Festival celebrates the epic
story of the town of Ibalong with three legendary heroes, namely: Baltog, Handyong,
Bantong. It aims to express warmth and goodwill to all people.

BATANGAS – SUBLIAN FESTIVAL

A celebration in Batangas since July 23, 1988. Its objective is to renew the
practice of subli. In the town of Alitagtag, the Holy Cross image was found during the
Spanish era. It is a worship dance performance in homage to the Holy Cross referred
to in the vernacular as “Mahal na Poong Sta. Cruz.” The word “subli” is derived from
two tagalog words “subsub” and “bali”.

Sublian is a festival celebrated in Batangas City, the capital of the province of

Batangas. It is a two-week long festival that culminates every July 23 coinciding with
the city’s foundation day. The Sublian is celebrated in honor of the town’s patron
saint: the Holy Cross in Bauan and Agoncillo, and the Sto. Niño in Batangas City.

The locals’ religious devotion is translated to a dance during the festival. They
perform the Subli to the beat of the drums and chant, the main Sublian Festival
music.
Today, the Sublian festival features not just devotional dance and song
numbers but also awesome street dancing performances, indigenous Filipino games,
Harana (serenades), the Lupakan, Awitan at Sayawan.

Lesson PHILIPPINE THEATER

2 Komedya, Sarsuela and Bodabil

PHILIPPINE THEATER
Komedya, Sarsuela and Bodabil
KOMEDYA

Komedya comes from the 16th century Spanish comedia (play). It is a play
written in verse which uses traditional methods of marcha (march) for entrance or
exit, Batalla (choreographed fighting and magia (magical effects). It is one of the
colorful theatrical traditions in the Philippines used by the Spanish as a method to
spread Christianity. This theatrical form describes the conflicts of Christians and
Muslims. This theatrical performance spread instantly but was criticized because of
its lack of national importance and realism.

2 TYPES OF KOMEDYA:

1. Secular Komedya- usually performed in town celebrations. An example of secular

komedya popularized in the 1600’s is the “Moro-moro” , that uses stories that revolve
around kings, queens, princes, princesses, animals and supernatural beings. Most
of the time, it portrays the clash between Christians and Filipino Muslims.

18
Another type of Secular Komedya in Nueva Ecija is the “Tibag” or “Arakyo” that is
performed during Santacruzan. It is a reenactment of the search for the Holy Cross
by Queen Helena and her son Emperor Constantine.

2. Religious Komedya- Mostly performed to enhance religious festivities. It focuses

on the life of religious icons (Jesus Christ, St. Michael, and other patron saints.)
Examples are Siete Palabras, Comedia de San Miguel and Senakulo; the Lenten
presentation of Passion of Christ.

SARSUELA

Sarsuela is an art form of lyric theater drama, comical in nature and it is

incorporated with singing, dancing, and dialogue. It is a play in prose. zarzuela
originated from Spain and was made popular in the Philippines in the 1800’s. It
portrays the typical Filipino realities and stories and social relations which viewers
can relate in their lives such as elections and feasts, marriage and family, vices, and
values. Walang Sugat is one of the most famous Sarsuela in the country.

BODABIL

Bodabil is another stage show that became popular during the Japanese
period based on the French vaudeville. These were called stage shows during
Japanese occupation and later variety shows. Bodabil was developed because city
growers wanted to uplift their emotional stability from the usual stage acts to a stage
presentation featuring comedy, musical, monologue, skits, impersonators, acrobats,
and even magical acts. Bodabil formed musical trends and musicians; performers;
and performance genres. The entertainers helped to make jazz and blues popular
and admired in our country. Here are the sample pictures of the different Bodabil
Stars:
