Introduction

The purpose of the course is to meet the requirement of Tanker Familiarization training. The course satisfies the standards of the STCW A-V/1-1, Table A-V/1-1-1 for Basic Oil and Chemical
Tanker Cargo operations.

The course has been designed following the “Requirement Guidelines for Qualification for STCW Endorsements for Officers and Ratings on Oil, Chemical, and Liquefied Gas Tankers.

Course General Learning Objectives

After going through this course, students should be able to,

Understand the basic terminologies used for tanker operations


Understand the nature of the business of waterborne transportation of bulk dangerous liquid
Understand the physical and chemical properties of oil and chemicals that are important for carriage on vessels
Know the constructional features of tankers carrying dangerous liquids
Know the various processes involved in cargo operation, e.g., loading, discharging, ballasting
Understand the importance of tanker safety culture in inculcating a safety mindset
Know the hazards associated with tanker operations
Know the various ways to control shipboard hazards
Know the function and use of gas measuring and similar instruments
Know the use of safety equipment and protective devices
Know the safe working practices and procedures for personal safety
Know the basic First-Aid measures on tankers, in reference to MSDS
Know the emergency actions, shutdown systems and procedures to be followed under emergency situations on board
Understand the effects of oil and chemical pollution on human and marine life
Know the shipboard procedures to prevent pollution from tankers
Understand the measures to be taken in the event of cargo spillage
Learn the safety precautions to be undertaken from case studies on oil and NLS ship emergencies
