Objective

• To understand the variety of interactive systems;

• To familiar the skills of interactive systems designed;
• Explain the Importance of human computer interaction; and
• Toimprove the interactions between users and computers –
by making computers more usable and receptive to the
user's needs.
Introduction
• Human–computer interaction (HCI),
alternatively man–machine interaction (MMI)
or computer–human interaction (CHI) is the
study of interaction between people (users)
and computers.
• With today's technology and tools, and our motivation to
create really effective and usable interfaces and screens,
why do we continue to produce systems that are
inefficient and confusing or, at worst, just plain unusable?
Is it because:
1. We don't care?
2. We don't possess common sense?
3. We don't have the time?
4. We still don't know what really makes good design?
The Human

• Vision
• Hearing
• Touch
• Movement
Why do we need to understand
Humans in HCI?

• Humans are limited in their capacity to process information.

• This has important implications for design
• Interacting with technology is cognitive
• Human Information Processing is referred to as cognition
Cognitive

• Meansrelating to the
mental process
involved in knowing,
learning, and
understanding things.
Cognition
• Cognition - the mental
action or process
of acquiring knowledge and
understanding through
thought, experience, and
the senses.
There are two methods for measuring
memory capacity
• Recall the sequence in order
• Recall the sequence in any order
The Computer
A computer system is made up of various elements each of
these elements affects the interaction.

• input devices – text entry and pointing

• output devices – screen (small&large), digital paper
• virtual reality – special interaction and display devices
• physical interaction – e.g. sound, bio-sensing
• paper – as output (print) and input (scan)
• memory – RAM & permanent media, capacity & access
• processing – speed of processing, networks
The Interaction
• Interaction Paradigms
Types of user interfaces (Common
interaction styles)
• Command line interface
• Menus
• Natural language
• Question/answer and query dialogue
• Form-fills and spreadsheets
• WIMP
• Point and click
• Three–dimensional interfaces
What is Human Computer Interaction

• Human-computer interaction is a discipline

concerned with the design, evaluation and
implementation of interactive computing systems
for human use and with the study of major
phenomena surrounding them.
• Understanding the ways in which thinking and
reasoning play roles in our ICT use.
What is Human Computer
Interaction?
• Isa cross-disciplinary area (e.g.,
engineering, psychology,
ergonomics, design) that deals
with the theory, design,
implementation, and evaluation of
the ways that humans use and
interact with computing devices.
Interaction
• Refers
to an abstract model by
which humans interact with the
computing device for a given task
Interface
• Interfaceis a choice of technical
realization (hardware or software)
of such a given interaction model.
HCI
Difference between User Interface and Human
Computer Interaction
User Interface (UI)
• isthe point at which human users interact
with a computer, website or application. The
goal of effective UI is to make the user's
experience easy and intuitive, requiring
minimum effort on the user's part to receive
maximum desired outcome.
