Authors, designers, developers, and inventors can use patents or copyright to safeguard
their ideas. The purpose of intellectual property law is to stop others from unfairly benefitting
from their ideas or works of art. Infringement, counterfeiting, and trademark misappropriation
are some examples of infractions of intellectual property law. The Bureau of Patents, Bureau of
Trademarks, Bureau of Legal Affairs, Bureau of Documentation, Information, and Technology
Transfer, Bureau of Management Information System and EDP, and finally, Bureau of
Administrative, Financial, and Personnel Services are government organizations that
implemented the intellectual property law.

According to Philippine copyright law, all books, poems, plays, reference materials,
newspapers, ads, computer programs, databases, music, dance, pictures, drawings, photos,
sculpture, buildings, maps, trademarks, and service marks are protected. Original works are
those that are produced directly and personally by a particular person or artist, whereas
derivative works are imitations or based on the original works of others. Works that are not
protected by copyright include "any idea, procedure, system, method, or operation," "concept,
principle, discovery, or plain data," "news of the day," and other unrelated facts and works of
the government. Protecting your intellectual property is essential.
