Case Study: A Person with Orthopedic Disability

1. Description
Ms. Lennie Navarro, a forty (40) years old optimistic and resilient individual, is navigating
her life with determination and grace despite facing the challenges of an orthopedic disability.
Orthopedic disability is a blanket-term for any condition or damage sustained to the
musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Orthopedic
impairment causes disability in that it is severe enough that it affects the regular daily functioning
of an individual as a result of the injury sustained to the musculoskeletal system. Individuals with
this condition, like Ms. Lennie Navarro, may experience limitations in mobility, dexterity, and
overall physical functioning. These disabilities impacted her ability to perform everyday activities,
such as walking, lifting, or grasping objects. Notably, she has not attended school since 1st
year highschool, potentially due to the challenges posed by her disability. This case study
unravels Ms. Lennie’s life, highlighting her unique experiences, her daily triumphs over physical
hurdles, her coping mechanisms, and the supportive strategies employed to enhance her overall
well-being.

B. Recommendations and Accommodations

Types of Accommodations Descriptions

Presentation After thoroughly discussing potential accommodations for

presentations, it was determined that interventions are not
necessary for this individual. Her disability has not impacted
her vision, so she does not require any supports that aids for
visual impaired people. Similarly, her hearing remains
unaffected, eliminating the need for any auditory assistance.
Additionally, she emphasizes that her communication skills
remain unaffected, showcasing her continued ability to interact
naturally with others. The injury from her back has affected,
which is also the source of her disability.

Response In terms of employment, the respondent has secured

comparable accessibility to job opportunities as others.
Despite her disability, she previously worked abroad but had to
discontinue due to tasks that were not suitable for her
condition. Although she has access to employment, her
employer fails to consider her physical limitations when
assigning heavy workloads, making it challenging for her.
Instead of accommodating her needs, she is assigned tasks
that a typical person could handle, requiring her to be an
all-rounder. Unfortunately, these tasks, especially those
involving heavy lifting, quickly exhaust her, resulting in
overwork.

Regrettably, the respondent does not consistently experience

equal job access. Upon returning home, she encountered
discrimination when applying for jobs due to her Kyphosis
condition, an orthopedic disability. Employers mistakenly
assumed she was incapable of performing the required tasks.
This discrimination has made it difficult for her to secure
employment, despite her ability to perform the job
competently. She emphasizes the importance of receiving the
benefits available to persons with disabilities (PWD) and
finding a job with manageable physical demands. These
benefits and a job tailored to her capabilities would greatly
assist her in meeting her financial needs and providing for
herself and her family.

Setting In terms of public transportation, the respondent does not find

commuting struggling, but in terms of getting in line,
sometimes the respondent does not get prioritized and is in
need to wait in line where in a person with disability should be
in the PWD lane (Person with Disability lane) where they can
get in line to be prioritized first and not in the normal lane
where they have to wait for a longer time to get prioritized. This
situation highlights the importance of clear accessibility
measures to ensure that individuals with orthopedic conditions
are appropriately accommodated in public spaces, particularly
in queues, where efficient and considerate prioritization can
significantly enhance their experience.

Schedule In terms of working hours, the respondent emphasizes the

need for scheduled rest breaks and opportunities for job
rotation or shadowing to vary physical demands. Additionally,
accommodations for person with orthopedic disability also
involves providing access to a comfortable workplace and rest
areas, flexibility in lunch breaks, and the implementation of a
workplace wellness program. Furthermore, regular
communication and on-going training for colleagues to raise
awareness about the specific needs of individual with
orthopedic disability are essential elements for
accommodation strategy.

Regarding to scheduled therapy and check-ups, the

respondent claimed that she had no single access to anything
mentioned due to financial problems. This instances are
common but when financial constraints prevents access to
traditional therapy, alternative strategies can support individual
with orthopedic disability. This includes seeking community
programs, connecting with peer support networks, and
tapping into employer support or employee assistance
program. Additionally, reaching out to local churches and
rehabilitation centers can offer alternative avenues for
necessary therapeutic support.

Others (UDL, behavior, etc.) The respondent wants the government to give more help, like
money and benefits, to people like her who face difficulties
because of their conditions. She thinks there should be
permanent jobs specially made for those with disabilities, so
they can work comfortably and not get too tired. She also
thinks everyone with a disability should get free check-ups and
medical care from the government, making it easier for them to
stay healthy without worrying about money. She just wants life
to be easier for people dealing with similar challenges.

Overall, she calls for enhanced government assistance,

employment opportunities, and accessible healthcare reflects
her commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive
society for individuals with disabilities.

In this scenario, tailored accommodations focus on fostering self-paced education and

leveraging community-based resources. By recognizing the individual's strengths and implementing
flexible learning strategies, we aim to create a more inclusive educational experience outside the
traditional school setting.
