INVESTIGATING THE GENDER DYNAMICS ON SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION:


POINTS OF VIEWS LECTURERS AT THE ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT
PERSATUAN ISLAM UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT

This research was conducted with the aim of investigating gender dynamics in Second Language
Acquisition (SLA) in the Persatuan Islam University environment. The research focused on the question
of whether gender differences in the Persatuan Islam University environment could influence second
language learning, motivation in SLA, and the implementation of SLA theories in the context of foreign
language learning in a university environment. The researchers would conduct interviews with English
lecturers at Persatuan Islam University regarding the gender dynamics in SLA. It is hoped that the results
of this research would provide a fairly in-depth understanding and insight into what factors could
influence second language learning, especially in terms of gender dynamics, and provide a basis for
developing more effective and inclusive learning strategies at the Persatuan Islam University.

INTRODUCTION
Language acquisition is a complex process influenced by various factors (Fromkin, et. al 2002),
and the role of gender dynamics in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is receiving increasing attention
in academic discourse. To understand how gender differences could impact second language learning is
very important for educators, researchers, and policy makers, this research focuses on exploring gender
dynamics in SLA at the Islamic Union University environment.

A distinctive language learning atmosphere shaped by cultural and institutional atmosphere


provides a distinctive environment at Persatuan Islam University. This research aims to determine
whether gender differences among Persatuan Islam University students influence their experiences in
second language learning. Specifically, this research explores the areas of second language learning
outcomes, motivation in SLA, and the application of SLA theory in the universitys’ English Language
Education Department.

To answer these research questions, this research uses a qualitative approach, by involving
English lecturers at Islamic Union University in in-depth interviews. Collecting views from experienced
lecturers at the Islamic Union University was considered necessary in this research in order to reveal the
complexity of gender dynamics that manifest in the SLA process. Through an examination of gender-
related factors that influence language learning, this research aims to contribute to a different
understanding of the challenges and opportunities that may arise in academic contexts.

It is hoped that the results of this research could provide suggestions for developing more
effective and inclusive language learning strategies and methods at Islamic Union University. By
investigating and understanding gender differences in SLA, educators could adapt their approaches to
create more supportive and equitable learning environments. Finally, this research aims to encourage
constructive dialogue regarding the intersection between gender dynamics and second language
acquisition, thereby contributing to improving language education practices at the Islamic Union
University and potentially becoming a model for similar institutions.

METHODOLOGY
This research conducted by qualitative-descriptive method. According to Moleong (2010),
qualitative-descriptive research is research that explains to understand research subject phenomena,
behavior, perceptions, motivations, actions, etc., holistically, and the way to describe the results in the

research is in the form of words and sentences. Based on Punch (1998), qualitative research explanations
do not use numerical data. He also stated that the research questions and methods were initially more
general and became more focused as the research progressed. The primary data collection was taken from
unstructured interview. Unstructured interviews are free interviews where the researcher does not use an
interview guide that has been arranged systematically and completely for the data collectors. The
interview guide used is only an outline of the problems to be asked (Sugiyono, 2010).
