A. INTRODUCTION

The emergence of slang in the form of slang among young people is

increasingly popular along with the times and advances in technology. Technology

that is increasingly rapidly influencing communication media, one of which is the

internet. In fact, the internet plays a big role in obtaining information and socializing

online. This facility makes it easier for social networking users to communicate

between two or more people and is done at the same time or is usually called

chatting. Its existence makes it easier to communicate with other people both

between regions and countries.

Slang is considered a familiar variety because the style of speech is

characterized by using a language code that is personal and relatively fixed within

the group. Familiarity and intimacy in communication do not require complete

grammar with clear articulation but short or brief utterances are sufficient.

The development of social media in Indonesia cannot be separated from the

role of world networking technology. If today, social networking sites have become

world social media giants, their influence on Indonesia is also very large. Twitter

has more than 564.1 million users worldwide, as reported by our world in data.

Social media technology has been adopted rapidly and continues to expand among

people around the world increasingly easy to find and easy information.

The increasingly rapid pace of development of information and technology

within the framework of digitalization has also influenced the increasing use of

social media in society. Some of the social media that are currently developing

1
include Twitter. From the title of this research "Slang Language in Captions on

Twitter: Interactional Sociolinguistics" the data was studied using Interactional

sociolinguistics to see the extent to which slang language is used on Twitter social

media, especially among teenagers today. Meanwhile, the reason researchers use

slang language is because slang can used by anyone, especially people in certain

groups who accidentally use the language so that it becomes a popular language or

is widely used on social media or when interacting directly.

Several relevant studies include the following. Atmanegara et al (2022) studied

WhatsApp Language Variations of Master of Indonesian Language Students at

Mataram University 2021. Halas et al (2023) studied Verbal Violence in Language

Nicknames Sasak Community of Bebuak, Kopang, Central Lombok. Safitri et al

(2023) studied words with connotative meanings in Sumbawa Sakeco lyrics.

Anggraini et al (2022) studied the Form and Use of Taboo Language in Children in

the Bertais Environment of Mataram City. Cahyani et al (2020) studied the Form

and Function of Slang in Lambe Account Photo Captions Turah on Instagram social

media. Meanwhile, Afriansyah et al (2022) studied the expressions of swearing on

YouTuber gamers' accounts. This research is clearly different in aspects and objects

from this research.

B. THEORY REVIEW

According to Chaer and Agustina, (1995:4) sociolinguistics discusses language

users and usage, language level grammar, various consequences of contact with two

or more languages, and the variety and timing of use of these language varieties.

2
Meanwhile, Sumarsono (2011:1) says the term sociolinguistics consists of two

words, namely socio is "society" and linguistics is "language study." So

sociolinguistics is the study of language which is linked to social conditions

(studied by the social sciences, especially sociology).

As a language system, language has systems and subsystems understood by all

speakers of that language. Chaer and Agustina, (2014:61) Language becomes

diverse and varied the occurrence of this diversity and variety of language is not

only caused by speakers who are not homogeneous, but also because of social

interaction they do is very diverse. Slang by Kridalaksana (2008: 225) is formulated

as an informal variety of language used by teenagers or certain social groups for

internal communication, as an effort so that people outside the group don't

understand what that is being discussed. Slang is a completely new vocabulary and

is always changing. Slang is an informal and non-standard language variety that is

seasonal in nature. Usually used by certain social groups for internal

communication non-group members don't understand.

The form of lingual units used to express local wisdom in preserving the

environment is in the form of words, phrases, sentences and discourse. Language

can play a role in preserving the environment. This is in line with the opinion of

Kymlicka (2003) that environmental conditions can also be related to the quality

and conditions of a multilingual linguistic environment, a multi-ethnic society, and

a cultural atmosphere that is also increasingly multicultural. According to Ullman

(in Padeta, 2001: 82) suggests that meaning is the relationship between meaning

and understanding. Meaning is connection which exist among the elements of the

3
language itself (Djajasudarma, 1999:5). According to Halliday (in Curson 1988:39)

language functions are divided into seven types, namely personal, regulatory,

interactional, informative, heuristic, imaginative and instrumental functions.

Caption on Twitter is one of the uses on the Twitter social network which is

used by all Twitter users to pour out their hearts, reveal or convey information that

will be conveyed to the public or to all Twitter users throughout the world.

C. RESEARCH METHODS

The type of research used in this research is qualitative research using

descriptive methods. According to Moloeng (2006:167) states that qualitative

research is research that aims to understand a phenomenon regarding what is

experienced by the research subject, for example, perception, motivation, by means

of describe in the form of words and language, in a special natural context.

Data are research materials (Sudaryanto, 1988: 9). As research material, it

contains research objects. In the speech there are words or sentences that will be

used as research objects. The speech is the speech in it contains slang. The speech

in this research is in the form of words and sentences containing slang in captions

on Twitter. Mahsun (2014:30) states that in data sources there are problems related

to population, samples and informants. In line with this opinion, Muhammad

(2011:167) also explains that data sources are related to who, what, and where the

information comes from. Regarding the focus of the research obtained. In other

words, the data source is related to the location and research unit or observation

unit. In this research, the data source was obtained from Twitter social media.

4
Data collection methods and techniques are selected based on the nature of the

data to be analysed. Likewise, in this research the choice of data collection method

was chosen based on the nature of the data, namely visual (written) and virtual data

(available on the internet). In connection with this, the data collection method

chosen is method documentation and listening methods and techniques.

The methods used to analyse data are very helpful in getting the desired goals.

Data analysis methods used in research This is an intralingual matching method and

an extra lingual matching method with advanced techniques such as the equalizing

comparison technique, the differentiating comparison technique, and the main thing

matching comparison technique.

D. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Based on the problem formulation and objectives of this research, the lingual

form of slang, the meaning of slang, and the function of slang will be explained.

Below are the three described in succession.

There are various types of word forms, namely basic words with sound

changes, word shortening and loan words which will be explained. Basic words

with sound changes that occur as a result of exchanging phonemes in a vocabulary,

for example:

Anjir “Dog”
"Still surviving is also an achievement, Anjir"
(Source: Echan 02 April 2024)

5
Based on the data above, the word anjir has experienced a change in sound. The

word anjir is slang for the word dog. Then the word dog experienced the removal

of the phonemes n and g from the base word. Then replaced using the -r suffix. The

word anjir comes from a pun on the word dog.

Word shortening, according to Chaer (2007: 191) is the process of cutting part

of a word into a short word, but which has the same meaning and meaning as the

full form.

Bun "Bunda"
"The handover went smoothly, bun"
(Source: Fabian M 15 December 2021)

Based on the data above, the word bun comes from the word mother, then undergoes

a haplological process. there is a sequential deletion of phonemes. The phonemes

that are omitted in the word bun are [d] and [a]. The word bunda becomes bun.

Language absorption occurs due to continuous contact over a long period of

time between speakers of different languages. Language contact is a linguistic

relationship that occurs between one language community and another language

Rohbiah, et al (2017).

Ready "Sudah siap"

"I bought the fruit salad, ready stock"
(Source: Aiza Fitri Hardianti March 22, 2020)
Based on the data above, the word ready is a foreign language, ready has an

equivalent word in Indonesian, namely the word ready, already. The word ready is

6
also often used in the marketing process, the word ready is often used and then

mixed and matched with Indonesian. For example, today the mochi is ready, sis.

Code mixing is the use of language units from one language to another to expand

language style or language variety. The word ready is commonly used by the public,

such as on social media Twitter.

“Mantul”Mantap betul”
"This loose powder is really mantul"
(Source: Mitha 03 April 2024)
In the data above, there is the word mantul, which is an abbreviation of mantap

betul which is formed through the process of preserving the syllables of each

component. The acronym mantul was formed through the process of preserving the

syllables of each component, namely retaining the syllable man from the steady

component and the syllable tul from the correct component.

A phrase according to Ramlan (in Bagus, 2008) is a grammatical unit

composed of two or more words and does not exceed the functional limits of the

clause.

Bodoamat "don't care/don't want to know"

"Bodoamat hard to sleep. Coffee makes your mood better"
(Source: Mutia March 31 2023)
In the data above there are the words bodo amat, bodo which means stupid and the

word amat which means very, if combined they will form a new word, namely don't

care or don't want to know.

7
Denotative meaning is meaning that contains actual meaning. Denotative

meaning refers to literature or dictionaries.

"I'm actually smart when I don't bucin"

(Source: Febby 01 April 2024)
In the text above you can see the word bucin which means slave of love which has

a denotative meaning. However, when it is inserted into the text, the meaning

changes to contextual meaning because it is appropriate to the context to "state" that

a person is crazy about their partner.

The function of slang used in status will be analysed based on Haliday's opinion

(in Curson 1988:39). Personal function, namely the function of language to express

thoughts, opinions, feelings and attitudes through language. This function is a

creating function identity through language. For example, writing and speaking.

“Wikipedia editors are fast as always”

(Source Iqbalbalf 02 April 2024)
In the text above there is the word gercep which means (Gerakan cepat) which is a

regulatory function because the speaker expresses orders. It can be seen from the

word gercep to order someone to do something quickly.

Interactional function, namely the function of language used to interact or

establish social relationships with other people. This is the "me and you function"

of a language. For example, greetings, pleasantries, sympathy, or consolation.

“Are you bored of seeing my sales posts? It's okay, because I'm
bored, I'm curious, Fun Pulling Sist"

8
In the text above there is the word sist which comes from the word sister in foreign

languages and In Indonesian it is interpreted as sister has an interactional function

because speakers often use it to explain kinship and brotherhood relationships to

someone or just to say hello.

Informative function, namely the function of language used to convey new

information, knowledge, or culture using language. This is function "I want to tell

you something" of a language. For example, writing, lecture, announcement, or

notice.

"Those who want 60 thousand can contact me japri"

In the text above there is the word japri which means private channel which has an

informative function because the speaker provides information to someone to send

a message via private or personal channel.

Heuristic function, namely the use of language to gain knowledge, explore and

understand the environment by learning. This is a function asking questions or “tell

me “Function. For example, questions or request for explanation of something.

"Because of the film, the pelakor broken kite became the topic of
conversation everywhere"
In the text above there is the word pelakor which means snatcher of someone's man

which has a hereustic function because the speaker tells or explains that what is

being talked about everywhere is about a woman who snatched a man from another

woman. Instrumental function, namely the function of language used to fulfil and

express a want or need. This is the “I want” function of something Language. For

example, I want to go, I need to go, or I want to write.

9
E. CONCLUSION

Based on the results of the analysis of the data obtained, it can be concluded

that the forms of slang language variations contained in account captions on Twitter

contain word forms which include basic words with sound changes, shortening of

words, abbreviations, acronyms and phrases. The meaning of slang variations found

in captions on Twitter consists of denotative meaning and contextual meaning. The

functions of slang language variations found in captions on Twitter consist of

personal, regulatory, interactional, informative, hereustical and instrumental. With

this research, researchers hope for several things. The study of sociolinguistics,

especially variations in slang language, can be explored more deeply to see that the

slang language used by today's teenagers is increasing and is always understood by

some people. In addition, languages can spread quickly by active internet users. The

meaning of variations in slang can be understood more deeply because today's

teenagers can use slang but sometimes don't understand the meaning of the slang.
