“JURASSIC PERIOD”

Information#1

 The first birds appeared during the Jurassic, evolving from a branch of theropod dinosaurs.
 Other major events include the appearance of the earliest crabs and modern lizards, and the
diversification of early mammals.
 Crocodylomorphs made the transition from a terrestrial to an aquatic life.
 The Jurassic Period (200–145 million years ago) began after the mass extinction that ended
the Triassic Period.
 This mass extinction allowed dinosaurs to flourish in the Jurassic Period, which is called the
golden age of dinosaurs.
 It opened up many new niches for dinosaurs to exploit. Also during the Jurassic, the earliest
birds evolved from dinosaur ancestors.
 All of the major groups of mammals evolved, as well, although they were all small in size.
 Flowering plants appeared for the first time, and new insects evolved to pollinate flowers.
 The continents continued to move apart, and volcanic activity was especially intense.

Information#2

 The Jurassic period, which occurred between 200 million and 145 million years ago, was the
second segment of the Mesozoic Era. It was a time of significant global change in the
continents, climate, and life forms.
 Geologically, the supercontinent Pangaea began to break apart, leading to the formation of
the Atlantic Ocean. This continental drift affected global climate and sea levels, creating new
environments.
 Biologically or in terms of life forms, the Jurassic period is most famous for the dominance
of dinosaurs. Some of the most well-known dinosaurs, such as Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus,
and Allosaurus, lived during this period. The first birds also appeared in the Jurassic period,
evolving from theropod dinosaurs. In the oceans, there was a rich marine life including
ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, which were common. On land, coniferous forests were
widespread, and the first true mammals appeared.
 Environmentally, the Jurassic period was characterized by the breakup of the supercontinent
Pangaea into two landmasses: Laurasia to the north and Gondwana to the south. This
continental drift had a profound impact on climate and sea levels. The climate was generally
warm and there were no polar ice caps. The sea levels were high, creating shallow seas that
covered many parts of the land.
 Historically, the Jurassic period is significant because it was a time of major evolutionary
diversification. The first mammals also appeared during this period, although they were small
and not very common. The period ended with a mass extinction event, which led to the next
geological period, the Cretaceous.
