Course outline
1. Overview of programmable logic controllers, Parts of a programmable logic
controller: Power Supply; central Processor Unit (CPU); Memory; Input/Output;
programming Panels.
3. Basic Input and output elements: Sources of basic input signals
3. Math functions: Boolean logic design.
4. Programmable logic controller programming: stepwise programming; ladder
logic, functional block diagram (FBD) and structured text language (STL)
programming; simulation; programming exercises; analog Inputs and Outputs.
Networks. Human Machine interfaces.
4. Timers and Counters, shift registers: Jump and calls; jumps, jumps within
jumps, subroutines, Timer; Types of timers, on-delay timers, off-delay timers, pulse
timers, Counters: Forms of timers, up and down counters, timers with counters,
Shift registers, sequencing applications, keeping track of items.
5. Programmable logic controller installation and maintenance: Installing the
PLC; Inspection of system.

Course policies
Assignments
1. Assignments shall constitute 5% of the final grade of the course.
2. Unless otherwise stated, assignment will be due one week after the issue date.
3. Students are encouraged to do assignments individually.
Practical Exercises
1. A least 3 practical exercise (design problem) will be administered.
2. Practical exercise will constitute 15% of the final grade of the course.
3. Failure to attend practical will be assessed Zero, unless there is a good reason
for one to be given a second chance.
4. If need be, practical will carried in groups specified by the lecturer.
5. Report should be submitted two weeks after the date of the practical.
Final Examination
1. Final exam shall constitute 70% of the final grade of the course.
2. University/college examination rules and regulations shall apply.
