Introduction:
In an endeavor to comprehend diverse cultural perspectives, I engaged in a comprehensive interview with my close
friend, John Matthew, who hails from the Philippines. Our dialogue traversed various facets of cultural identity,
including views on the self, core values, and the pervasive influence of customs and beliefs on daily life.

1. Views on the Self:

John Matthew commenced our discussion by articulating his nuanced perspective on the self, shaped by his dual
cultural heritage. He illuminated the Filipino influence on his perception, emphasizing the value of communal
identity and interconnectedness ingrained in Filipino culture. John Matthew highlighted the concept of "kapwa,"
underscoring the intrinsic interconnectedness among individuals and the significance of empathy, solidarity, and
collective well-being in shaping his Filipino identity.

Conversely, John Matthew shared insights from his American upbringing, where he observed a prevailing
emphasis on individualism. He noted the cultural emphasis on personal autonomy, self-expression, and the pursuit
of individual goals and aspirations in American society. John Matthew emphasized his appreciation for the
American belief in self-reliance and the notion that individuals possess the agency to chart their own paths and
define their identities.

2. Values:

Our conversation then transitioned to an exploration of core values inherent in both Filipino and American
cultures, as reflected in John Matthew's upbringing. He articulated the fundamental values cherished in Filipino
society, including "Utang na Loob" (debt of gratitude), "Pakikisama" (getting along with others), and "Hiya"
(sense of shame). John Matthew underscored the importance of reciprocity, social harmony, and respect for
authority in guiding Filipino interpersonal relationships and societal norms, which he deeply respects and values.

Similarly, John Matthew delineated the core values prevalent in American culture, drawing from his experiences

deeply internalized and embraced. John Matthew elaborated on how Americans prioritize individual rights and
liberties, as enshrined in the nation's founding principles, and strive for democratic governance and social justice.

3. Influence of Customs and Beliefs on Way of Living:

In exploring the influence of customs and beliefs on daily life, John Matthew provided vivid examples from both
Filipino and American contexts, reflecting his diverse cultural upbringing. He expounded on Filipino customs,
such as "fiestas" (community celebrations) and "mano po" (respectful gesture towards elders), which serve as
manifestations of hospitality, familial respect, and cultural continuity, shaping his values and interactions.

Moreover, John Matthew elaborated on American customs, including the commemoration of national holidays

influences stemming from his dual Filipino and American heritage. From views on the self to core values and their
