It has been our pleasure to tutor George this semester. George’s tutoring sessions were designed
to include individualized, tailored literacy instruction in the areas of oral reading fluency, word
knowledge (spelling/phonics/sight words), comprehension, and writing.
However, he continued to struggle to sound out the letter q in the pre and post assessments. In
addition, he was inconsistent with his knowledge of the y letter sound. These findings suggest
that George may need additional instruction with the sounds of the letters q and y.
George’s word study, or spelling instruction, goes hand-in-hand with the improvements in
automatic word recognition and decoding. Despite an initial assessed need for more instruction
in spelling and reading CVC words, George is now more consistent in accurately representing
short vowel patterns in words such as pig, hen, big, and bed. Presently, George may need
additional practice with CVC words. Our next focus of instruction would include short vowel
words with digraphs such as shut, wick, thin, match, and when.
George utilizes the reading and spelling strategy of breaking down words into individual letter
sounds then blending those sounds to produce the whole word. At times, he will use his fingers
to assist himself with using this strategy.
George was a pleasure to work with, and we are very pleased with the progress he made during
our tutoring sessions. Should you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to
