 THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PRE-DAWN MEAL (SUHOOR/SAHARI/SEHRI) BEFORE THE FAST

The following is a collection of Ahadeeth that highlight the importance and emphasis Rasoolullah
‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ placed on the requirement to take part in the suhoor meal and how it is an integral
part of the fasting ritual:

َ ‫ع ْن‬ َ ،ِ‫ع ْن أ َ ِبيه‬ َ ،‫علَ ٍّى‬ ُ ‫سى ب ِْن‬ َ ‫ع ْن ُمو‬ َ ،‫ْث‬ ُ ‫ قَا َل َحدَّثَنَا اللَّي‬،ُ‫أ َ ْخ َب َرنَا قُتَ ْي َبة‬
. " ‫ور‬ ِ ‫س ُح‬ُّ ‫ب أ َ ْكلَةُ ال‬
ِ ‫ص َل َما َب ْينَ ِصيَامِ نَا َو ِص َي ِام أ َ ْه ِل ا ْل ِكت َا‬ ْ َ‫وسلم " ِإنَّ ف‬
It was narrated that 'Amr bin Al-As (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬said: "The Messenger of Allah ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ said:
'The difference between our fasting and the fasting of the people of the Book, is eating Suhur."' '

Sunan an-Nasa'i 2166

‫ور بركَة‬
ِ ‫س ُح‬ َ َ ‫ «ت‬:‫سلَّ َم‬
َّ ‫س َّح ُروا فَ ِإنَّ فِي ال‬ َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ ُ ‫ قَا َل َر‬:َ‫ع ْن أَن ٍَّس قَال‬
ِ َّ ‫سو ُل‬
َ ‫َّللا‬ َ
Anas (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬reported Rasoolullah ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ as saying, “(Make sure to) Take a meal a little
before dawn, for there is a blessing in taking a meal at that time.”

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬reported: The Messenger of Allah ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ said, “The pre-
fasting meal is a blessed meal, so do not abandon it even if you only take a sip of water. Verily,
Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who take the pre-fasting meal.”

Abu Huraira ‫ رضي للا عنه‬reported The Messenger of Allah ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ as saying, “How good is the
believer’s meal of dates shortly before dawn!”

It was narrated from Al-Miqdam bin Ma’dikarib (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬that the Prophet ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ said:
"You should take the morning meal of Suhur for it is without doubt the blessed morning meal."

Al-‘Irbad bin Saariya (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬told; Rasoolullah ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ invited me to the pre dawn meal
in Ramadan saying, “Come to the blessed morning meal.”

Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it.

Nu'aim bin Ziyad Abu Talhah said: "I heard An-Nu'man bin Bashir (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬on the minbar in Hims
saying: "We prayed Qiyam with the Messenger of Allah ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ during Ramadan on the night
of the twenty-third until one-third of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the
night of the twenty-fifth until one-half of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on
the night of the twenty-seventh until we thought that we would miss Al-Falah (The success)- that is
what they used to call suhur."

It was narrated that Abu 'Atiyyah said: "I said to 'Aishah (‫ )رضي للا عنها‬: 'Among us there are two of
the Companions of the Prophet ‫صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬, one of whom hastens Iftar and delays Suhur, and the
other delays Iftar and hastens Suhur.' She said: 'Which of them is the one who hastens Ifar and delays
Suhur?' I said: "Abdullah bin Masud (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬.' She said: 'That is what the Messenger of Allah
‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫علَ ْي ِه َو‬ َّ ‫صلَّى‬
َ ُ‫َّللا‬ َ used to do."'

Narrated Anas: Zaid bin Thabit (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬said, "We took the Suhur with the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬. Then he
stood for the prayer." I asked, "What was the interval between the Suhur and the Adhan?" He
replied, "The interval was sufficient to recite fifty verses of the Qur'an."

Abdullah Ibn Mas`ud (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬narrated: Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "The (call for prayer) Adhan
of Bilal should not stop anyone of you from taking his Suhur for he pronounces the Adhan in order
that whoever among you is praying the night prayer, may return (to eat his Suhur) and whoever
among you is sleeping, may get up, for it is not yet dawn (when it is like this)." (Yahya, the sub-
narrator stretched his two index fingers side ways).

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (‫ )رضي للا عنه‬that the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said: “The
Adhan of Bilal should not prevent anyone of you from eating Suhur, for he gives the Adhan to alert
those among you who are asleep, and so that anyone who is praying can prepare himself for
fasting. The Fajr does not come in this manner, rather it comes in this manner, and it appears along
the horizon.”
