No, DMRC/GM/Project/QM/03/2020/16 Date: 13.10.2021 uality Circular No-2 Sub: Applying Cement wash on reinforcement bars. During weekly Quality walks, rust and corrosion on the surface of reinforcement bars has been observed due to exposure for a long period on the, (i) Protruding reinforcement bars of Pier- provided for Pier-Pier Cap stitch concrete, (i) Pier dowel bars above Pile Cap, (il) Shear connectors provided for the t rack plinth beam in Pre cast U-Girders, (iv) Dowel bars for the deck slab provided in Pre cast |/T /Pie Girders, etc. In this connection, Reference is invited to following:- (i) OCS Clause no-10.3.3 - The protruding reinforcement shall be coated with cement wash. (ii) Clause No-1603 of MoRT&H specification - Portions of uncoated reinforcing steel and dowels projecting from concrete, shall be protected within one week after initial placing of concrete with a brush coat of neat cement mixed with water to a consistency of thick paint. This coating shall be removed by lightly tapping with a hammer or other tool not more than one week before placing of adjacent pour of concrete. (ii) Clause no-4.13.4 of IS-4082 - The application of a coat of cement wash shall be given to prevent ‘scaling and rusting in case of long storage. (iv) The Contractor has to follow provisions of applicable codes, Standards and Publications as per Para 1.9 of section $.01 of GCC. During the Monthly Quality review meeting held on 30.09.2021 by MO Sir, in presences of DP, DW and CPMs great emphasis was laid on protection of reinforcement bars from rust and corrosion from perspective of durability of Metro structures. In view of the above, it is advised to apply one coat of cement wash on the exposed reinforcement. bars and also for the rebars stored for a long period as @ protective measure to prevent rust and corrosion. It is also advised to include this in the respective Construction Method Statements of Cast-in-Situ and Pre-Cast RCC works. Encl:- Copies of above MoRT&IH Specifications and IS:4082 for ready reference. coca To: CPM-1, CPM-2, CPM-3, CPM-4, CPM-5, CPM-6, CPM-8, CPM-9 and ED/C/P-1. Reinforecement (Untensioned) 1601 DESCRIPTION This work shall consist of furnishing and placing coated or uncoated mild steel or high strength deformed reinforcement bars (untensioned) of the shape and dimensions shown on the drawings and conforming to these Specifications or as approved by the Engineer. 1602 GENERAL Steel for reinforcement shall meet the requirements of Section 1000. Reinforcements may be either mild stee/medium tensile steel or high strength deformed bars. They may be uncoated or coated with epoxy or with approved protective coatings. Uncoated reinforcing steel shall be protected from rusting or chloride contamination. Reinforcements shall be free from rust, mortar, loose mill scale, grease, oil or paints. This may be ensured either by using reinforcement fresh from the factory or thoroughly cleaning all reinforcement to remove rust using any suitable method such as sand blasting, mechanical wire brushing, etc., as directed by the Engineer. Reinforcements shall be stored on blocks, racks or platforms and above the ground in a clean and dry condition and shall be suitably marked to facilitate inspection and identification. Coated reinforcing steel shall be protected against damage to the coating. Ifthe coating on the bars is damaged during transportation or handling and cannot be repaired, the same shalll be rejected. 1604 BENDING OF REINFORCEMENT Bar bending schedule shall be furnished by the Contractor and got approved by the Engineer before start of work. Reinforcing steel shall conform to the dimensions and shapes given in the approved from Bar Bending Schedules. Bars shall be bent cold to the specified shape and dimensions or as directed by the Engineer using a proper bar bender, operated by hand or power to obtain the correct radii of bends and shape. prevent deterioration and corrosion. Itis desirable to coat reinforcement with cement wash before stacking to prevent scaling and rusting. 4.133 Bars of different classification, sizes and lengths shall be stored separately to facilitate issues in such sizes and lengths so as to minimize wastage in cutting from standard lengths. 4134 In case of long storage, reinforcement bars shall be stacked above ground level by at least 4.135 Structural steel of different classification, sizes and lengths shall be stored separately. It shall be stored above ground level by at least 150 mm. upon platforms, skids or any other suitable sup- ports to avoid distortion of sections. In coastal areas or in case of long storage suitable protective coating of primer paint shall be given to prevent scaling and rusting 4.14 Aluminium Sections Aluminium sections of different classification, sizes and lengths shall be stored separately, on a level platform under cover. The aluminium sections shall not be pulled or pushed from the stack nor shall be slided over each other, to protect the anodizing layer. 4.15 Doors, Windows and Ventilators ASL General While unloading, shifting, handling and stacking timber or other lignocellulosic material based, metal and plastic door and window. frames and shutters, care shall be taken that the material is not ragged one over the other as it may cause damage tothe surface ofthe material particulariyin the case of decorative shutters. The material should be lifted and carried preferably fat avoiding damage of corners or sides. 4.152 Metal and plastic doors, windows and ven- tilators shall be stacked upright (on their sills) on level ground preferably On wooden battens and shall not come in contact with dirt and ashes. If received in crates they shall be stacked according to ‘manufacturer's instructions and removed from the crates as and when required for the work, 4.15.3 Metal and plastic frames of doors, windows and ventilators shall be stacked upside down with the kick plates at the top. These shall not be al- lowed to stand for long in this manner before being fixed so as to avoid the door frames getting out of shape and hinges being strained and shutters drooping, 4.154 During the period of storage all metal doors, windows and ventilators shall be protected from loose cement and mortar by suitable covering, such as tarpaulin. ‘The tarpaulin shall be hung loosely on temporary framing to permit circulation of air to prevent condensation, 4185 All timber and other lignocellulosic material based frames and shutters shall be stored in a dry and clean covered space away from any infestation and dampness. The storage shall preferably be in well-ventilated dry rooms. The frames shall be stacked one over the other in verti- cal stacks with cross battens at regular distances to keep the stack vertical and straight. These cross battens should be of uniform thickness and placed. vertically one above the other. The door shutters ‘shall be stacked in the form of clean vertical stacks one over the other and at least 80 mm above ground. on pallets or suitable beams or rafters. The top of the stack shall be covered by a protecting cover and, weighted down by means of scantlings or other suitable weights. ‘The shutter stack shall rest on hard and level ground. 4.15.6 If any timber or other lignocellulosic material based frame or shutter becomes wet. during transit it shall be kept separate from the ‘undamaged material, ‘The wet material may be dried by stacking in shade with battens in between adjacent boards with free access of dry air generally following the guidance laid down in I$ 1141 : 1992 4.15.7 Separate stacks shall be built up for each size, each grade and each type of material, When materials of different sizes, grades and types are to be stacked in one stack due to shortage of space, ‘the bigger size shall be stacked in the lower portion ofthe tacks. Suitable pallets or separating battens shall be kept in between the two types of material. 4.16 Roofing Sheets 4.16.1 Roofing sheets shall be stored and handled insuch a manner as not to damage them in any way. 4.162 Plain and corrugated asbestos cement sheets shall be stacked horizontally to a height of not more than one metre on a firm and level ground, with timber or other packing beneath them. if stacked in exposed position, they shall be protected from damage by the winds. Asbestos cement sheets of same variety and size shall be stacked together. Damaged sheets shall not be stacked with sound materials. All damaged sheets shall be salvaged as early as possible.
