Side effects
• Nausea and vomiting • Urticaria
• Diarrhoea • Headache
• Abdominal pain • Dizziness
• Oral candidiasis • Vaginal candidiasis

Contraindications
Do not give cefixime to patients with known allergy
to cephalosporins or penicillins.

Pregnancy Cefixime is safe for use during pregnancy

Breast feeding Limited information is available regarding


the safety of cefixime during breast feeding,
advise the mother to suspend breast feeding
until treatment is completed.

Neonates The use of cefixime is not recommended


among neonates and children below
6 months.

Renal impairment Doses of cefixime should be reduced in


patients with moderate to severe renal
impairment.
Do not exceed a dose of 200mg incase
a patient has a creatinine clearance
of < 20ml/min.

Hepatic impairment Cefixime can be used in patients with hepatic


impairment without adjusting the dose.

Drug - drug interactions
Drug Interactions

Combined oral Cefixime reduces the effectiveness of


contraceptives combined oral contraceptives when
used concurrently.

BCG, typhoid and The effectiveness of BCG, typhoid or cholera


Cholera vaccine vaccine is reduced by cefixime when
used concurrently.

Gentamycin and There is increased risk of nephrotoxicity


Furosemide when cefixime is given concurrently
with gentamycin or furosemide.

Anticoagulant such Cefixime increases the anticoagulant effect


as warfarin of warfarin.

Meloxicam Cefixime increases the clinical response and


side effects of meloxicam when used
concurrently.

Food - drug interactions
• The presence of food in the stomach increases the
absorption of cefixime
• Iron-rich cereals, infant formulas decrease absorption
of cefixime.

Patient education
• Take cefixime after food in order to increase its absorption
and reduction in side effects such as nausea and vomiting.
• Take the medicine as recommended by the prescriber
and do not share your medicine with other patients.
• Advise the patient to report back to the prescriber
in case vaginal itching and discharge occurs during
treatment.
• Advise the patient to come back in case they develop
bloody diarrhoea
