The transformer is a device used for converting a low alternative voltage to a

high alternative voltage. It is a static electrical device that transfer energy by
inductive coupling between its winding circuits. Transformer range in size from
thumbnail sized coupling transformer hidden inside a stage microphone to huge
units weighing hundreds of tons used in power plant or to interconnect portion
of the power grid.
All operate same basic principle, although the rangers of designs is
wide. While new technologies have eliminated the need for transformer in some
electronic circuit, transformer are still found in some electronic devices.
Transformer are essential for high voltage electric power transmission, which
make long distance transmission economical practical. A transform is most
widely used device in both low and high current circuit. In a transformer, the
electrical energy transfer from one circuit to another circuit take place without
using the moving parts.
