CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

With the sudden increase in heinous crimes, kidnappings and rape cases which most of the
case students were the victim, a safety precaution such as extreme security in schools and strict
monitoring of students must be observed. However, this kind of precaution was only applicable
within the vicinity of the school premises. In this study we will be introducing a location tracking
application and determine the perception of the students if it will be implemented on their daily
school basis.

Location tracking device is a tool installed inside the vehicle or an object and its purpose is to
track the vehicle or the object where it is inserted. This is attached to the desired targets such
as the phones or the childcare and elderly care devices (Lee et al. 2008)

Location tracking gained its popularity over the years. Many studies are conducted to fully
explore this technology and its impact on society. Location tracker inside school premises, in
this study/literature location trackers as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is used and is
discussed on how it can affect and can benefit the schools in facilitating student’s movements
around the school premises and it also allow for a better monitoring of student’s attendance and
violations in school (Yedukondalu et al., 2020). Although the study has shown the effects and
benefits of location trackers this doesn't determine appropriateness and the behavior of
students about location trackers as it can invade privacy and have risks of giving away data
leading to potential misuse.

Another study conducted among women wherein they were being tracked by both by means of
GPS and Phone. The results of that study showed that most women accepted being tracked
however they suggested that tracking devices must be redesigned to be more discrete and to
be able to show movement patterns. (Fernandez & Vinarao,2019)

This study will use a tracking application, particularly the Life360 as its main location tracking
app. This study will focus more on the perception of students particularly how will it affect their
behavior and privacy, and whether it is suitable to ensure their safety.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study seeks to determine the perceptions of Grade 11 STEM Students regarding the
use of Life 360 for safety management. This study will be conducted among the STEM Students
of Sapang Palay National High School during the academic year 2023-2024. The result of this
study will serve as a foundational basis for shaping policies, and technological advancements
related to the implementation of location-tracking applications for safety management in Grade
11 STEM students.

Research Questions:

1. What are the expectations of Grade 11 STEM students towards the features and
functions of the location tracking application for their safety and security?
2. What are the possible outcomes of the implementation of location tracking
application on Grade on 11 STEM Students?
3. What are the concerns and issues raised by Grade 11 STEM students as to the
use of location tracking applications for safety management?
