SECTION - A
Q.1 Attempt ANY FIVE questions of the following: (54=20)

(i) Explain the role of distribution transformer in distribution system.

(ii) Why induction motor can-not run at synchronous speed?

(iii) State Kirchoff’s voltage and current law in suitable circuits.

(iv) Explain the operation of PN junction with suitable diagram.

(v) Explain the principle of operation of DC machine as motor.

(vi) Discuss the input and output characteristics of BJT.

(vii) Explain the difference between BJT and JFET.

SECTION - B
Q.2 Attempt ANY FIVE questions of the following: (54=20)

(i) Compare full wave center tap and half wave rectifiers.

(ii) Define drift current and diffusion current in a semiconductor.

(iii) Find the equivalent resistance between the terminals X and Y in the fig 1.

(iv) Three resistances R ohm, 2R Ohm and 3R Ohm are connected in delta. Compute the
equivalent star resistance.

(v) Draw and explain the torque-speed characteristics of dc shunt motor. Based on their
characteristics, enlist its applications.

(vi) Transformer is not an energy conversion device. Justify the statement.

(vii) Differentiate between core type and shell type transformer.

(viii) Explain why single phase induction motors are not self-starting.

SECTION - C
Q.3 Attempt ANY TWO of the following: (210=20)

(i) Explain how BJT can be used as an amplifier in electronic circuits with the help of a
neat diagram.

(ii) What is the use of filter in rectifier circuit? Discuss with the help of a neat diagram the
working of bridge full wave rectifier.

(iii) With the neat sketch, explain the construction and working of transformer. Derive the
emf. equation.

(iv) Define the following terms with reference to alternating current. Average value RMS
value and peak factor with mathematical equations. Derive the equation for sinusoidal
waveform.

SECTION - D
Q.4 Attempt ANY FOUR of the following: (410=40)

(i) Explain the principle of operation of npn transistor. Also explain the significance of
arrowhead in the circuit symbol of BJT.

(ii) Using superposition theorem, calculate the current in the 2 Ohm resistor given in fig. 2.

(iii) A 3 phase, 50Hz, 6 pole induction motor has a full load percentage slip of 3%. Find the
synchronous speed and actual speed. Draw the torque slip characteristic of 3 phase
induction motor.

(iv) In 25 KVA, 1000 / 100 V transformer, the iron losses and cu losses are 300 W and 350
W respectively.

(a) Calculate the efficiency at full load and 0.8 pf lagging.

(b) Calculate the efficiency at half load and 0.8 pf lagging.

(v) What do you understand by doping of semiconductors? Explain its importance.

(vi) Explain the operation of dc shunt motor. A 250 V dc shunt motor takes 30A current
while running at full load. The resistance of motor armature and field winding are 0.1
Ohm and 200 Ohm respectively. Determine the back emf generated in motor, when it
runs on full load.
