HYPOTHESIS
Alternative
If flower pigments are extracted and incorporated into ran organic lip gloss formula, then
the resulting lip gloss will exhibit natural coloration and possibly unique cosmetic
properties due to the presence of phytochemicals. flower pigments contain a diverse
array of phytochemical compounds, such as flavonoids and carotenoids, which are
known to impart vibrant colors and may offer additional cosmetic benefits.

Null
There is no significant difference in the coloration or cosmetic properties of lip gloss
when flower pigments are incorporated compared to when they are not incorporated.
This hypothesis suggests that any observed variations in lip gloss coloration, texture, or
other cosmetic attributes between the two formulations are attributable to random
chance or factors unrelated to the presence of flower pigments

CHAPTER II
FOREIGN STUDIES
(Khoo et al., 2017) This study explores the properties of anthocyanins, water-soluble pigments
found in fruits and vegetables, focusing on their role as natural food colorants and their potential
health benefits. It discusses their extraction, chromatography, and various studies
demonstrating their antioxidative, antimicrobial, and health-protective effects through
mechanisms such as free-radical scavenging and inflammatory cytokine signaling. It also
discuss the different types of anthocyanin pigment as well as the the factors affecting the color
and stability of anthocyanin pigments, particularly focusing on pH levels. Anthocyanin stability is
influenced by various factors including pH, light, temperature, and the presence of other
compounds like copigments and antioxidants. In this study, it tackles how copigmentation and
temperature affect the color change of anthocyanins in solutions, alongside pH variations.
Copigmentation, involving the reinforcement of anthocyanidins by metallic ions or flavonoids,
stabilizes the color of plant tissues like leaves, flowers, and fruits. The study by Khoo et al.
(2017) on anthocyanins and their properties, including extraction, chromatography, and health
benefits, provides valuable insights into the potential use of flower pigmentation in organic lip
gloss from the natural colorants used for extracting flower pigmentation in use to a organic
lipgloss, the health and safety benefits, as well as the copigmentation and the factors affecting
color and stability. Overall, the findings from the study provide a scientific basis and
methodology for extracting flower pigmentation and incorporating it into organic lip gloss
formulations, offering natural colorants with potential health benefits.

Researchers discovered efficient extraction methods to isolate pigments from flowers

while maintaining their stability and color intensity (Damiani et al., 2022) In this study, it
explores the extraction process and stability of pigments obtained from pitaya bark flour,
derived from the Hylocereus costaricensis plant. It likely investigates various extraction
techniques to obtain pigments from the bark flour and examines factors influencing their
stability, such as pH, temperature, and storage conditions. The study may also explore
potential applications of these pigments, such as natural colorants in food, cosmetics, or
pharmaceuticals. The study on the extraction process and stability of pigments obtained
from pitaya bark flour relates to extracting flower pigmentation in organic lip gloss in
several ways. For example, in the extraction techniques to obtain pigments from the
flower pitaya bark flour, researchers would explore methods to extract pigments from
flowers efficiently and effectively. As well as, in the factors that influence it stability
pigments, such as pH, temperature, and storage conditions, in extracting flower
pigmentation for lip gloss, researchers would need to consider these factors to ensure
the stability and longevity of the pigments in the lip gloss. Also, in the potential of the
extracted flower pigmentation that could be used as natural colorants in organic lip
gloss formulations, providing vibrant and long-lasting hues without synthetic additives.
Comprehensively, this study share a common goal of extracting natural pigments for
use in cosmetic products, with the potential to offer sustainable and eco-friendly
alternatives to synthetic colorants more importantly in extraction flower pigmentation
from pitaya bark flour.

Flowers are a natural source of bioactive compounds that not only have antioxidant,
anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties, but can also be used as natural dyes. For
this reason, nowadays plants are widely used to produce natural cosmetics and foods.
Int these studies, the properties of the water extracts of Papaver rhoeas L., Punica
granatum L., Clitoria ternatea L., Carthamus tinctorius L., and Gomphrena globosa L.,
as bioactive, natural dyes, were investigated. Plant flower extracts were tested for their
antioxidant (ABTS and DPPH radical methods) and anti-inflammatory effects by
Monlimar Development Academy Inc.

determining the ability to inhibit the activity of lipoxygenase and proteinase. The extracts
were tested for their cytotoxic effect on skin cells, using Alamar Blue and Neutral Red
tests. The ability to inhibit the activity of enzymes responsible for the destruction of
elastin and collagen was also studied. Research has shown that extracts have no toxic
effect on skin cells, are a rich source of antioxidants and show the ability to inhibit the
activity of elastase and collagenase enzymes. P. rhoeas extract showed the strongest
antioxidant properties with IC50 value of 24.8 ± 0.42 µg/mL and 47.5 ± 1.01 µg/mL in
ABTS and DPPH tests, respectively. The tested plants are also characterized by an
anti-inflammatory property, for which the ability to inhibit lipoxygenase at a level above
80% and proteinase at the level of about 55% was noted. Extracts from P. rhoeas, C.
ternatea, and C. tinctorius show the strongest coloring ability and can permanently dye
cosmetic products, without significant color changes during the storage of the product.

Stated by Nurshafieera Idayu Mat Jaine and Mohd Shukri Mat Nor Lip (July 02,2020)
balm is a must-have for both sexes since it is frequently used to reduce lip swelling and
inflammation. These days, people would rather use homemade lip balm that is natural
and doesn't have any negative side effects on their lips as long as the necessary testing
is done once the product is formulated. Consequently, the goal of this research is to
determine the optimal composition for an all-natural lip balm that balances user safety
with aesthetic appeal (using all natural colourant). With this lip balm made from natural
ingredients, your lips will appear healthy, hydrated, and soft.

Pigmentation has been studied for many years at both the genetic and
biochemical levels in various plant, animal and microbial species. In plants,
there are several different types of pigments that are responsible for colour in
flowers. However, some types occur rarely (see Davies, 2004) Indeed, pigmentation—
along with other characteristics like smell, shape, and nectar—plays a critical role in
flower development by drawing pollinators. Pollinators use it as a trigger to find and
engage with the blooms, promoting plant ecology and reproduction. (see Davies, 2004)

LOCAL STUDY
SM Amir Al-Zumahi (2020) The extraction process of five different flowering plants
utilizing different dye extraction methods and solvents (ethanol and water) to choose the
best dye removal process. The FTIR spectra revealed the presence of several clear
functional groups for all five natural dyes. The analytical studies such as UV
spectroscopy, column chromatography, and vacuum evaporation were performed to
isolate the dyes from their solutions. The UV-Vis studies on the pigments of flower
extracts indicated broad absorption peaks in the visible region including clear bandgaps.
Among the studied pigments, Alternanthera ficoidea showed the lowest direct bandgap
of 1.69 eV and an Urbach energy value of 6.33 meV. The dye extraction yield rate
improvement was extended from 11.7 to 24.7% (water solvent) and 11.3–32.4%
(ethanol solvent). Throughout the studies, it was observed that ethanol produced a
better extraction for organic dyes than water as a solvent. Aging studies revealed that all
the dyes at the room temperature showed better stability with minor changes in the
observed optical parameters in oxygen-rich conditions; however, these parameters have
shown significant variations at a 60 °C temperature.

Dela Cruz R. T. (2022) In this study it tackles the feasibility of using indigenous plants
as natural substitutes for artificial food additives. It examines the safety, effectiveness,
and attributes of various indigenous plants in improving the taste, appearance, and
nutritional quality of food items. The research likely entails screening different plant
varieties to determine their suitability as food additives, as well as assessing their
sensory properties and potential health advantages. It is approved for cosmetic use by
regulatory authorities, can be included in these formulations to provide vibrant and long-
lasting hues to the lip gloss.

Similarly, to De Jesus A. (2020) study highlights recent developments in the use of

natural dyes in various industries, driven by innovative research conducted by Filipino
scientists and supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The
study emphasizes the environmental benefits and diverse applications of natural dyes,
including in food, cosmetics, textiles, and crafts. It also discusses the competitive
natural dyes are naturally-occurring colorants extracted from plants or plant parts thus
are environmentally-friendly and can be also applied in cosmetic products. Overall, this
studies findings collectively suggest a promising shift towards sustainability and eco-
friendliness in the development of food additives and cosmetic ingredients, ultimately
contributing to healthier and more environmentally conscious consumer choices.

Bungihan M. E. (2013)This study examines the health benefits of 10 ornamental

flowers from Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. Researchers analyzed the presence of
secondary metabolites like phenolics, alkaloids, essential oils, and terpenes, as well as
antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Using methods like thin-layer chromatography
and the Folin-Ciocalteu method, they identified bioactive compounds in the flowers. The
findings could contribute to the identification of potential natural antioxidants and
antibacterial agents, thus highlighting the importance of ornamental plants beyond their
decorative purposes and may have implications for the formulation of organic cosmetics
like lip gloss. Ornamental flowers contain bioactive compounds like ideal for organic
cosmetics. Using these natural ingredients in lip gloss appeals to consumers preferring
natural products. Antioxidant-rich flower extracts in lip gloss formulations can contribute

to lip health and protection, while antibacterial effects promote lip hygiene. Using flower
extracts in lip gloss aligns with consumer preference for natural, safe, and sustainable
products, offering both aesthetic appeal and potential health benefits.

According to Arrelano-Garcia H.et al.(2020) Connecting this study to the title "Flower
Pigmentation as an Organic Lip Gloss" can be justified by considering the broader
context of natural ingredients used in cosmetic products. While the specific study
focuses on beetroot, it falls under the umbrella of natural pigmentation derived from
plant sources, similar to flower pigmentation. Therefore, despite the slight deviation in
the specific ingredient being studied, the overarching goal of utilizing natural
pigmentation in cosmetic formulations aligns with the theme of flower pigmentation in
organic lip gloss. This connection underscores the broader trend of consumers'
preference for naturally derived cosmetic products and the exploration of various plant-
based ingredients for their cosmetic properties.
