CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Nowadays makeup plays an important role for both men and

women. That's right, even men have become more beauty conscious and

are concerned about their looks. Cosmetics can be produced in the organic

and hypoallergenic form to meet the demands of users. Makeup is used as

a beauty aid to help build up the self-esteem and confidence of an

individual. The importance of cosmetics has increased as many people

want to stay young and attractive. Most of the cosmetics products

nowadays, are mostly made of chemical compounds that may cause

irritation or allergic reaction in sensitive individuals (Ghafoor, 2016).

According to Mercola (2016), being exposed to such high number of

chemicals all day, nearly every day can increase the chance in developing

these disorders and diseases. The presence of these chemicals cause

toxicity in cosmetic products and are harmful for human body because the

skin of human being is extremely permeable so these products are

absorbed by skin. Some chemicals may penetrate the skin in significant

amounts especially when left on skin for long periods as in case of facial

makeup (FDA, 2015).

Therefore, environmental innovations are very important nowadays

and are most likely going to be as well in the future. Natural cosmetic

products are developed from natural ingredients, developed with

environmentally friendly methods like the product will be put in a recyclable

container. Environmental innovations are not just a demand from the

market but are most likely going to be important in the future due to the fact

that the environment cannot take this load for that long anymore. As

innovations are significant in the cosmetic industry, it is important to think

what the process should be like and how to bring these new innovations to

the market in a most appealing way (Heino, 2018).

The researchers would like to develop an organic lip tint and cheek

tint because organic cosmetics products are gentler on skin. It would be an

eco-friendly beauty product that is composed of organic compounds like

Zinger Spectabile (Beehive Ginger) and Basella Alba’s seed puree

(Malabar nightshade seed). The container of this product will be those

recycled materials or containers from perfumes or make up kits.

One of the main ingredients is the Beehive Ginger; this is an

ornamental plant that has strong gingery fragrance. According to Chee

(2010), beehive ginger is used for flavouring and used as an agent for food

preservation also, this plant is effective for treating colon cancer.

For the product to have color, the researchers will use the Malabar

nightshade seed. It is said that Malabar nightshade seed can help keep the

cells from aging (Maslowski, 2009). While typical spinach does well in

cooler climates, Malabar spinach thrives in high temperatures, allowing for

a summer harvest.
Plant Malabar spinach in moist and fertile soil. Malabar spinach

grows best in a hot and humid climate and with full sun exposure. This

variety of spinach needs a trellis or tomato cage to grow. To save garden

space, grow peas and Malabar spinach on the same trellis. Plant seeds

indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost. To speed up germination, scar

the seed with a sharp knife, and wait until the soil is warm and there is no

chance of frost to transplant outdoors. Space transplants about a foot apart.

Water plants sufficiently to avoid a bitter taste. Malabar spinach is ready to

harvest in the beginning of summer, when the main stalk is strong. To

harvest, cut leaves and stems 6-8 inches long. Harvest leaves all summer

or until it begins to flower.

In preserving this plant, pick only what is needed and store in the

refrigerator. It will keep for 2 to 5 days.  To keep longer, cut a 1/2 inch off

the bottom of the stem and place in a jar with fairly deep water. They will

start to root in less than a week. To save seeds, the pulpy flesh can be

completely removed and rinsed until the water runs clear. Or the seeds can

just be dried on screens with the pulp on. Be sure the seed is dry before

storing (Gateway Greening, 2019).

Objectives of the study

In view of all these, this study will be conducted generally aims to

develop 2 in 1 organic tint and assess its acceptability among the Senior
High School students in Biliran Province State University – Laboratory High

School.

Specifically, this study aimed to:

1. Develop 2 in 1 organic tint.

2. Assess the products’ acceptability in terms of:

2.1 pigment;

2.2 fragrance; and

2.3 texture.

Once realized, it will contribute to the development of the 2 in 1

organic tint. This product can be an alternative to other cosmetic products

with chemical compound. The null hypothesis of this study is not a good

substitute for cosmetics that are chemically compound.

Definition of terms

To clearly understand the term used in this study, the researchers provide

definitions in,

Beehive Ginger. One of the main ingredients used in making 2 in 1

organic tint

to test the acceptability of 2 in 1 organic tint.

Texture. One of the indicators to determine whether the tint is heavy

or light

Review of Related Literature

This section elucidates related literature and studies derived from

various sources which support the stance of the study.

Everything natural and environmentally friendly is the thing of today.

It goes from food and clothes to cosmetics and make-up. In order to keep

up with the current trends cosmetics companies like Beiersdorf, Procter &

Gamble, L’Oréal and Unilever are designing their own natural products to

meet the demand. The sales of natural cosmetics have increased quite
rapidly and are expected to grow even more in the coming years.

(Handelsblatt Wirtschafts & Finanzzeitung, 2005) .

Green cosmetics is defined as being a multifaceted construct for the

preservation of the environment, minimisation of pollution, responsible use

of non-renewable resources, and animal welfare and species preservation

(McEachern and Mcclean 2002). Green or environmentally-friendly

products are broadly defined as products that will not pollute the earth or

deplete natural resources and can be recycled or conserved (Shamdasani

et al. 1993). A study indicated that green cosmetics were natural cosmetics

containing botanicals and fruit-based formulae (Csorba and Boglea 2011).

Natural beauty products can be seen as some kind of complex

recipe for the skin or for the body in general, and an informed consumer is

interested in selecting them with the same attention for the detail generally

kept for food one directly eats (Culasso,2014).

Consumers are getting more and more conscious in selecting the

products they use. They are increasingly demanding natural ingredients and

additives in cosmetic products, as well as the replacement of synthetic

compounds with possible negative effects on health and the environment.

The concern does not only have to do with the safety of the products but

also the environmental effects the manufacturing and producing process

has. (HAPPI, 2009) Because of this, natural and environmentally friendly

products as already mentioned are strengthening their place in the markets.

This trend is also an opportunity for the companies since new regulations
are forcing them to think more of the environment and produce their

products in a way that less harms the environment

Furthermore, the market for green products is expanding worldwide

in a variety of industries, such as food, fashion and cosmetics (Cervellon

and Carey, 2011). There is little research about consumer behaviour

regarding natural cosmetics, or consumers’ purchase decisions and

attitudes towards natural personal care products and cosmetics products.

However, the rising popularity of natural cosmetics raises important

questions for marketers, retailers and industry planners. The number of

papers that have been related to the study of natural cosmetics has

increased (Johri and Sahasakmontri, 1998; Kim and Seock, 2009;

Dimitrova et al., 2009; Cervellon et al., 2011; Rybowska, 2014).

In the past, chemicals were used to substitute expensive natural

ingredients making the cosmetics available and widely used. Today, the

trend for a healthier way of living is increasing consumers’ perceptions and

interest towards mainly natural products, including cosmetic products.

Some studies found that, in choosing cosmetics, natural aroma, high

quality, hydration, skin protection, medical advice, and long lasting, good

promotion, hypoallergenic and not tested on animals are the most important

motivating factors for the customers in Bulgaria, Montenegro and Italy.

Natural cosmetics are bought by people who practice an environmentally

friendly lifestyle and care about their health, beauty and appearance

(Dimitrova et al., 2009: 1158). Chen (2001) defined green purchase as a

specific kind of eco-friendly behaviour that consumers perform to express

their concern for the environment.

Natural cosmetics are more adequate to use than any other

cosmetic products that are chemically compound. Aside from it is healthier

and safety to use, it is also an Eco-friendly for this product produced in a

way that less harms to the environment. It is also cheaper than chemical-

based one for the ingredients of the chemical compound are more

expensive than natural products.

Status of the Prior Arts of the Technology

Lipstick was originated on 2500 BC to 1000 BC from ancient

Mesopotamia, a home of first lipstick known to mankind. Women in that

area used crushed gemstones to decorate their lips. On 2000 BC to 100

AD, Egyptian used lipstick that was made from crushed carmine beetles.

This popular red lipstick (sometimes decorated with shimmering effects of

pearlescent that was extracted from fish scales) was used by rich and

powerful women, most notable by famous Cleopatra (51 AD – 30 BC).

On 8th - 12th AD, Arab Andalusian cosmetologist Abu al-Qasim al-

Zahrawi managed to invent solid lipstick, that were based perfume sticks

rolled in special molds. An on 16th century the Reign of English Queen

Elizabeth I, bright red lips and a stark white face became fashionable. This

enabled popularization of lipstick that was by that time made from beeswax

and red stained plants. Only high class women and actors wore lipstick. On
1884 French cosmetic company Guerlain became producing first

commercial lipstick product. They made it from deer tallow, castor oil,

beeswax, and then covered it in silk paper. On 1880’s Famous American

actress Sarah Bernhardt begun wearing lipstick in public. During that time,

lipstick did not come in tube, but was applied with a brush. 1915, first

lipstick that was sold in cylinder metal containers was invented by Maurice

Levy. 1923, Cylinder swivel-up tube was patented by James Bruce Mason

Jr. in Nashville, Tennessee. This invention made lipstick easy to apply.

1930’s, Max Factor invented lip gloss lipstick and on 1940’s Second World

War made lipstick scarce because several of its essential ingredients were

used in the war effort (petroleum and castor oil).

During those years, metal tubes were replaced by plastic and paper.

On 1950 American chemist Hazel Bishop created first long lasting and non-

smearing lipstick. On 1973 Cosmetics company Bonnie Bell introduced to

the public first flavoured lipstick called “Lip Smackers”. This type of lipstick

became instant success among younger female audience and on 2000

Worldwide female population accepts lipstick as the integral part of their

daily life. They choose colours by current fashion and by their own

preference.

And now in the year 2019, the researcher’s wants to innovate

something new. A lipstick that can also be used as a cheek tint that is made

of an organic compound.
CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the materials and methods in making the 2 in

1 organic tint.

Materials and Methods

Materials and Methods for Objective 1: Develop 2 in 1 organic tint.

1) Identify the measurements of each ingredient. Two point five (2.5)

ml. of beehive ginger and ten (10) ml. of Malabar nightshade puree and 2

drops of grapes extract.

2) Testing different combinations that will produce a good product

that can be used for gathering data.

Procedures

Preparing the tint:

1 Squeeze the Beehive ginger with the use of cloth. Also, squeeze the

Malabar nightshade seed to get the extract of both ingredients.

2 Measure the desired amount of Beehive ginger and the Malabar

nightshade seed puree.

Conclusions

Based on the study of the researchers and data analysis, the

following conclusion was drawn:

A 2 in 1 organic tint was developed made of Zinger spectabile

(Beehive Ginger) and Basella alba’s seed puree (Malabar Nightshade

seed) that could be a good substitute or alternative to cosmetics with

chemical compounds and asses the acceptability of the product in terms of

pigment, fragrance, and texture. It is indeed that there is a need to develop

an organic tint because most of the cosmetics nowadays are more on

chemical compounds. As to the acceptability of the product, the

respondents like the 2 in 1 organic tint that could be a good substitute from

other cosmetic product that is chemically compound.

Recommendations

It I s recommended to the other researchers who want to discover

new things about this study is to;

1. Innovate new colors of the tint that can be fit to all skin color,

2. Make the color of the product last long,

3. Improve the fragrance of the tint and;

4. Enhance the flavor to make it more interesting
