CHAPTER 1

A PROPOSED PROJECT OF ZINBINGER OFFICINALE (GINGER) AS AN

OINTMENT/VAPOR RUB FOR HEADACHE AND NASAL CONGESTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The researchers gathered information and conducted a survey for the class
of stem -1208 for almost a month and found out that most of the students suffer
from nasal congestion or difficulty breathing through the nasal openings and
headaches. This study aims to develop and produce an environmentally friendly,
cheaper, and effective herbal plant-based vapor rub or ointment which is
expected to be much more accessible and convenient to use and due to its low
projected cost because of the abundance of the materials to be used in making
this product, specifically, ginger.

Zingiber Officinale rhizome has been revered as a culinary and medicinal

spice in many traditional cultures. this study aims to formulate herbal ointments
as well as investigate the effect of ginger as an ointment. In this study, the
properties of the developed ointment were compared with the natural ointment.
Accordingly, the developed ointment in this study can be considered suitable to
be used to the external human body such as the chest and nose to heal and
protect the respiratory problems.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to review the current evidence on ginger's effects as an

anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. How does ginger work?

2. Can the ginger absorb through the skin?
3. To what extent does ginger help with inflammation?
4. How long does it take for ginger to work for inflammation?
5. What’s the most effective form of ginger to use on headaches and nasal
congestion?
6. What are the possible side effects and risks when using the product?
7. Are there any significant differences between natural ointment/vapor rub
from traditional commercially made ointment/vapor rub?
8. Is there a significant difference between natural and herbal ointment in terms of:
1.1 Materials.
1.2 procedure
1.3 effectiveness

1.3 HYPOTHESIS

This study hypothesized that:

1. There is a significant difference between and among the productiveness

of natural ointment and the traditional ointment use in headache and nasal
congestion.
2. There is no significant contrast between natural ointment and the traditional
herbal ointment use in headache and nasal congestion in terms of materials,
the procedure, and effectivity.
