ABSTRACT OF THE STUDY

Bayugo Elementary School is one of the places in Meycauayan City which is often
flooded. Classrooms need to be cleaned from time to time and applying a floor wax is a must.
But the price of commercial floor wax is high and there are numbers of harmful effects to
people using it because of its chemicals. Also, piles of banana peels are just being thrown
away every day by the people and these banana peels add to the tons of garbage in the
community. Moreover, cases of Dengue Fever nowadays increase rapidly and this is a big
health concern in the school because stagnant waters, which can be a place for mosquitos to
reproduce, is very visible in the school.

With these problems worsening, the researchers thought of an alternative way to

create a floor wax which is cheaper, eco-friendly, and mosquito repellant by using banana
peels and lemongrass as the main ingredients in the floor wax.

The researchers prepared the needed materials. Banana peels were cut into small
pieces. Lemongrass was crushed to extract the fluid. Used candles were melted in a can.
Researchers then add banana peels and lemon grass to the can. They let it boil and put off the
fire afterwards. Kerosene was added to achieve the wax consistency. They use a strainer to
remove the banana peel and lemon grass. The wax was transferred into a plastic container to
cool and harden.

With the right procedure and different experimentations on the amount of banana
peels, lemongrass, and kerosene, in getting the desired consistency of the floor wax, the
researchers therefore conclude that banana peels and lemongrass can be an excellent
alternatives in making a floor wax that is eco-friendly and mosquito repellant, and with the
right attention, this floor wax can be a source of income of parents and students while helping
to eliminate the problems in the community.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

a. Introduction

One of the problems the City of Meycauayan faces during rainy season is massive
flooding. Out of the 26 barangays in the City of Meycauayan, there are nine (9) barangays,
including Bayugo, determined with high susceptibility to flooding due to natural elevation of
the area and to abnormally high precipitation and high tides resulting to overflowing of
channels.

Bayugo Elementary School is one of the places in Meycauayan City which is often
flooded. Classrooms need to be cleaned from time to time and applying a floor wax is a must.
But the price of commercial floor wax is high and there are numbers of harmful effects to
people using it because of its chemicals.

Also, piles of banana peels are just being thrown away every day by the parents of
students of the school because they make banana cues for a living. And these banana peels
add to the tons of garbage in the community.

Moreover, cases of Dengue Fever nowadays increase rapidly and this is a big health
concern in the school because stagnant waters, which can be a place for mosquitos to
reproduce, is very visible in the school and in the community.

With these problems worsening, the researchers thought of an alternative way to

create a floor wax which is cheaper, eco-friendly, and mosquito resistant by using banana
peels and lemongrass as the main ingredients in the floor wax.

b. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine if banana peels and lemongrass can be a good substitute
as an ingredients in making floor wax. Specifically, this study aims to answer:
1. What are the characteristics of the revised floor wax to make it eco-friendly floor
wax?
2. Does the product help lessen the problem regarding cleaning the classrooms, too
much banana peels waste disposal, and protecting the people to Dengue Fever?
3. Can the eco-friendly floor wax compete with commercial floor wax?

c. Hypothesis

This study carried out with the following hypothesis:

1. The eco-friendly floor wax makes the floor shine like the commercial floor wax but
with lesser harm to the people and to the environment.
2. The eco-friendly floor wax helps in lessening the problems of cleaning rooms with
much lesser cost of floor wax, lessening the banana peels waste disposal, and
protecting the people to Dengue Fever.
3. The eco-friendly floor wax can be a substitute for commercial floor wax and can be a
source of income for other people.
d. Significance of the Study

The study of making an eco-friendly, mosquito resistant floor wax shows significant
in the following:
a. Proving that banana peels and lemongrass can be a good alternative ingredients in
making an eco-friendly and mosquito resistant floor wax which is way cheaper
than commercial ones.
b. Discovering a useful and beneficial way of recycling banana peels, used candle
wax, and lemongrass in making an eco-friendly floor wax.
c. To have given this a market opportunity and be a source of income to other
parents and students of the community.

e. Definition of Terms

a. Banana Peel – is the outer covering of the banana fruit.

b. Floor wax – is a liquid mixture of chemicals that create a thin, hard, protective
surface when applied and allowed to dry on a surface.
c. Lemongrass – a grass (Cymbopogon citratus) of robust habit native that is grown in
tropical regions for its lemon-scented foliage.

f. Scope and Limitation

This study only focuses on making a floor wax with banana peels and lemongrass as
its ingredients. This study would not be focusing on other issues on what banana peels and
lemongrass can do or what they have, other than being an ingredients for floor wax.

BRIEF REVIEW OF RELATEED LITERATURE

Floor waxing is an act of cleaning involving wax to polish the floor. Floor wax
offers glossiness, additional hardness, slip and scuff resistance, while protecting. Floor wax is
usually a natural product that comes from a certain type of palm tree. When used on floors,
the wax usually comes as a paste that is spread over the floor with a floor-buffing. Though
the terms are used interchangeably, wax and floor finish are not the same thing.

Floor waxing is essential to maintain the shiny gloss of wooden floors. However, if
you find buying ready-made floor wax prohibitively expensive, it's possible to mix raw wax
crystals and kerosene with banana peels to create a substance suitable for use polishing your
wooden floors. This home-made floor wax will give a comparable shine and smoothness to
that of commercial products, and the oil in the kerosene counteracts the banana peel's
stickiness to ensure the finished sheen isn't tacky.

The product did not contain harmful chemicals so it was environmental friendly, safer
and cheaper. Floor wax is a great material for polishing floors, it has been a friend and a
trusted material for keeping floors shiny and making it look new. Floor wax is made from
synthetic materials According to Esmeralda Lee, Floor wax is a liquid mixture containing
water, polymer emulsions, film former, preservatives and modifiers. These are all synthetic
materials which is expensive and also not good for the health and environment. This research
aims to aid the household users of floor wax into using a much safer, natural, organic and
especially cheaper way of shining their floors. It is not only cheap and natural but very
efficient, it uses materials available at home, and household users may make their own.
Banana peel, also called banana husk or banana skin in British English, is
the outer covering of the banana fruit. Banana peels are used as food for animals, in water
purification, for manufacturing of several biochemical products as well as for jokes and
comical situations.

Banana Que vendors consume hundreds of bananas every day and every time they
cook hundreds of banana, banana peelings are being disposed with no use. That is why this
study seeks the possibility of banana peelings as an alternative floor wax. Because as we
know that common synthetic floor wax are made of artificial ingredients and this study
suggest to make use of natural waste as an alternative for synthetic and artificial materials
present in common synthetic floor wax.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon), variously known as lemongrass, barbed wire grass, silky

heads, Cochin grass or Malabar grass or oily heads , is a genus of Asian, African, Australian,
and tropical island plants in the grass family. Some species (particularly Cymbopogon
citratus) are commonly cultivated as culinary and medicinal herbs because of their scent,
resembling that of lemons (Citrus lemon). Other common names include barbed wire grass,
silky heads, citronella grass, and fever grass, amongst many others.

Most of the natural insect repellent products are made from the essential oils extracted
from certain plants such as cedar, peppermint, lemon balm, and even soybeans or from water
or other liquid. Lemon grass has long been used in natural mosquito repellents which contain
citronella oil. Citronella the essential oil found in Lemongrass is registered with the FDA. It
is the most widely used natural mosquito repellent found in candles, sprays, and lotions.

b. Interpretation of Data

Out of the three trials that were performed in order to come up with the best produced
floor wax with banana peels and lemongrass as the main ingredients, the third trial is
considered to be the best. With the different variations and adjustments done on the
procedure, the mixture of wax that is boiled longer gives the best produced floor wax.

Many ratios of the mixture were tested to achieve the right consistency. The smell of
the floor wax depends on the amount of lemongrass. The shine effect of the floor wax
depends on the right amount of candles, banana peels, and kerosene.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

a. Conclusion
There are many inventions that are accepted in our society nowadays, but there are
things that we need to take into consideration. The inventions we need to make are the ones
which are eco-friendly, can lessen, if not solve, the current problems the community have,
can recycle the things we have so that we will not be spending a lot of money, and can be a
source of income too.

The eco-friendly mosquito resistant floor wax the researchers made is very suitable to
the people in our community because it covers a wide range of problems the community
have. It can be a source of income for the parents and students. It can protect the people from
the bites of insects, especially mosquitos which can carry Dengue Fever. It can lessen the
banana peels waste disposal. And it can help maintain the cleanliness of the classrooms, and
even homes of the people.

The researchers therefore conclude that this floor wax can be a great of help not only
to the school but to the whole community as well.

b. Recommendation
The researchers would highly recommended to use the eco-friendly mosquito resistant
floor wax instead of commercial floor wax in the market because it is a lot cheaper and fits in
our budget. It is also a big help to protect ourselves from insect bites, especially the
TIGAT
mosquitos which can carry Dengue Fever. It can also be a source of income for parents and
students.
