CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Asia Pacific Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, Banana peels can be

recycled and used to lessen the waste in our environment. There are many ways to lessen such
waste to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings and also to prevent harmful effects to humans
due to pollution. Banana peel can be used as an alternative ingredient in making floor wax. Using
this kind of scrap can reduce the harmful chemicals components found in the commercial floor
wax. Also, Carnauba wax can help the Banana peel to produce good quality floor wax as a
substitute to kerosene. The cost of this alternative was cheaper compared to the floor wax that
was commercially available. The quality of the Banana peel with Carnauba wax floor wax was
just the same or greater than the commercially available, Brand X floor wax.

Coconut oil has also undergone studies. And like banana peel, it can also be one of the
ingredients that can be used to make floor wax. Cocos nucifera is commonly known as coconut
palm which is a member of the palm tree family (Aceraceae) and literally has many uses but is
most well-known for the products of its fruit, such as coconut milk, coconut water and coconut
oil. Coconut milk is generally extracted from grated coconut meat after pressing or squeezing
with or without the addition of water (Patil & Benja Kul, 2018). kernel). Basically, coconut milk
is an oil‐in‐water emulsion, stabilized by some proteins existing in the aqueous phase. According
to the National Candle Association (2019), Over the centuries, candle waxes have been
developed from a variety of fats, oils and waxy-like substances derived from animals, insects,
plants and rocks. Scientists consider “wax” to be a generic term for classifying materials that are
liquid at higher temperature, water repellent, smooth texture, low odor and low toxicity. All wax
is primarily hydrocarbons, whether the wax is of animal, vegetable, petroleum origin. The
chemical composition of all waxes used for candle-making is similar, and all candle waxes burn
in the same manner.

On the other hand, Lemongrass has been touted to be one of the best plants for repelling
the impact of and from mosquitos. The Lemongrass plant is known to be an excellent mosquito
repellant. According to a study conducted in 2011, around 95% mosquitos from a specific range
of species were either killed or completely repelled due to the intense odor of lemongrass oil.

In addition, it was proven that placing bits of orange peel or zest around the garden
repels flies and mosquitoes. Rubbing orange peel on the skin is a home remedy for preventing
mosquito bites. It will smell wonderful and avoid mosquitoes with no side effects on human
health.
According to World Health Organization, Philippines health authorities are reporting an
increase in the mosquito borne viruses, dengue and chikungunya, early in 2023. From January 1
through February 18, 2023, officials report 17,136 total dengue fever cases, a 102 percent
increase compared to the 8,491 cases reported during the same period in 2022. And as we all
know, floor Wax provides deep nourishing protection for new and reclaimed interior wooden
floors, giving them a traditional, soft, natural sheen, whilst protecting them against daily wear
and tear. Quick drying, non-sticky and buffs easily to a sheen, Floor Wax is also suitable for use
on cork floors. With that, the objective of the study is to determine the potential of using coconut
oil, banana peel, and lemongrass as floor wax and insecticide substitutes in place of synthetic and
chemical ones.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The primary goal of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of musa para disiaca peel,
cocos nucifera oil, and cymbopogon citratus stapf as an alternative floorwax and insecticide.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of musa para disiaca peel, cocos nucifera
oil, and cymbopogon citratus stapf as an alternative floorwax and insecticide.
Therefore, the researchers seek to answer the following questions throughout the study:

a. Does the banana peel, coconut oil, and lemongrass work well to repel mosquitoes and
wax floors?
b. Is banana peel floor wax environmentally friendly and safe to use?
c. Would banana peeling work as a substitute source for producing floor wax?
d. Is banana floor wax as effective as commercial floor wax?
e. Can orange extract helps to lessen the original odor of the product?
HYPOTHESIS

The study will be able to prove that musa para disiaca peel, cocos nucifera oil, and
cymbopogon citratus stapf is effective as an alternative floorwax and insecticide. Coconut oil is
an eco-friendly and healthy alternative to commercial floor wax, offering several advantages. It
is natural and non-toxic, moisturizing, easy to apply, cost-effective, and has a pleasant aroma. It
can help to keep wooden floors from drying out and cracking and is easy to apply to and does not
require any special equipment or tools. It is also relatively inexpensive, making it a great choice
for people who want to save money on cleaning and maintenance. The essential oil of
lemongrass contains several chemical constituents such as citral, geraniol, and limonene, which
have been shown to have insecticidal activity against various insects, including mosquitoes, flies,
and cockroaches. Which were going to combine these two to create an alternative floor wax that
is less expensive and may act as an insecticide when applied. This will help you to save your
money and you are far away from the diseases it can cause us because of the chemicals usually
used to make floor wax that we can smell

FEEDBACK

The input on this framework above shows the ingredients that were used for making the juice
namely: banana stem, lemon, extract and water.

The first process is to clean the harvested piece of banana stem plant to remove dust and other
dirts. Next is to cut a portion and slice off the darkened ends. After cutting, we peel off the thick
outer layers until we reach the solid inner core. We chop the core into pieces then transfer them
in a blender and add 1 cup of water. We wait until it is thoroughly grinded and afterwards, we
transfer it on a strainer to strain the liquid so the tough fiber won’t mix with the juice. And
lastly, we add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of lemon extract.
The output of this research is to produce an all-natural juice which doesn’t contain any harmful
substances. Furthermore, to know and test the efficacy of the juice in treating high blood
pressure and to provide a conclusion for this study.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is aimed at showing that coconut oil and banana peel can be a superior and healthier
alternative to traditional floor wax. The following will benefit the study:

Students- Students benefit from having a room free of mosquitoes and odorless, glossy surfaces
that won’t disrupt their study sessions in addition to having an affordable, simple-to-use solution
available for their class expenses.

Household- Those who share a room may unwind and not worry about the smell, especially if
some of them are allergic to chemical smells. It is also less expensive and practical to worry
about the expenses.

Family- Families that are looking for affordable, yet useful products might consider a 2-in-1
product. They should use this product since it is safe, has a soothing scent, works better than
industrial floor wax, and protects their family from dengue.

Children- Because children are more susceptible to danger, parents must use cleaning products
that are chemical-free, safe, and mosquito-repellent to keep pests away from their kids.

Researcher - They could develop a modified version of this product that would be tremendously
useful to everyone.

Future Researcher- Future researchers would improve the product even further, especially
given their prior knowledge of the study, which would push it to its fullest potential.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This focus of the study is to demonstrate and determine the effectiveness of banana peel
and coconut oil as an alternative floor wax with lemongrass as a mosquito repellent. The floor
wax that is popularly known has side effects that are bad for the health. It also has a pungent
odor that irritates most people. Studies show that constant exposure to the inhalation of the odor
of cleaning products, especially floor wax, has bad respiratory effects. The purpose of this study
is to create an alternative for floor wax that eliminates the bad respiratory and dermatological
side effects that can be obtained from floor wax, with the same or better quality than the floor
waxes known today.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following words and terms are related and played a crucial role in this Science
Investigatory Project. Furthermore, the words and terms that are presented are vindicated with
technical and operational definition to help and guide the future researchers and readers about
this study.

Boiling- is the rapid phase transition from liquid to gas or vapor; the reverse of boiling is
condensation.

Cocos nucifera oil- or coconut oil, has been used for its moisturizing and nourishing properties
on the skin and hair.

Cymbopogon citratus stapf- or lemongrass, has been used for its insecticidal
properties.

Musa paradisiaca peel- also known as banana peel, has been used traditionally for its antifungal
and antibacterial properties.

Shredding- the action of tearing or cutting something into shreds.

Drying- is a mass transfer process consisting of the removal of water or another solvent by
evaporation from a solid, semi-solid or liquid.

Soaking- to permeate so as to wet, soften, or fill thoroughly. : to place in a surrounding element

(such as liquid) to wet or permeate thoroughly.

Squeezing- firmly press (something soft or yielding), typically with one's fingers.
Cutting- a piece cut off from something, especially what remains when something is being
trimmed or prepared.

Melting- Melting, or fusion, is a physical process that results in the phase transition of a
substance from a solid to a liquid.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

This section of the study contains the related literature and studies that will help the
researchers to identify the hemostatic properties of banana and the properties of the other
ingredients such as water, lemon extract, and salt, in making the juice as well as the studies
about the high blood pressure or hypertension.
THEMATIC

According to http://www.apjmr.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/APJMR-2019-7.2.006.pdf,
The main purpose of giving the Banana Peel floor wax acceptability measure was to determine
the effectiveness of Banana Peel floor wax when applied in a concrete material. It also aims to
find out the mean difference between the Banana Peel and the commercially available floor wax,
the Brand X floor wax. There were three hypotheses drawn from the Banana Peel floor wax
acceptability measure data .A mean rating of 3.0 was set as the level of odor acceptability of the
Banana Peel floor wax effectiveness for the measure used as tool in the study. A mean score of
1.12 and 11.57 was set as the level of acceptability of the Banana Peel floor wax effectiveness
for the measure used as tool in the study, for the friction and shininess criteria respectively.
Below was the rating scale used by the 25 respondents of this study in rating the waxes’
effectivity or acceptability in a concrete material for the odor criterion: 5 - no odor; 4 – mild; 3 –
moderate; 2 strong odor; 1 - very strong odor. The mean rating for odor effectiveness of Banana
Peel floor wax was 4 based on the survey.
The data presented shows that a mean obtained by the Banana Peel floor wax for odor statistical
significance reaches the standard mean of 3.0 that was
set as level of Banana Peel floor wax effectiveness or acceptability. The Banana Peel floor wax
obtained a mean score of 4 for odor effectiveness or acceptability, while the Brand X floor wax
obtained a mean score of 1.96. Using t-Test: Paired Two Sample for Means, the data presented in
Table 5. shows that the odor of the
banana peel floor wax was not strong compared to the odor of the Brand X floor wax. Therefore,
Ho was rejected; that was, the mean score of the banana peel floor wax odor statistical
significance was greater than that of the Brand X floor wax’s. Banana peels can be recycled and
used to lessen the waste in our environment.
There were many ways to lessen such waste to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings and also
to prevent harmful effects to humans due to pollution.
One of the ways to lessen the waste in our surroundings was to recycle scraps came from fruits,
one of which was the Banana peel. Banana
peel can be used as an alternative
ingredient in making floor wax. Using this kind of scrap can reduce the harmful chemicals
components found in the
commercial floor wax. Also, Carnauba wax can help the Banana peel to produce good quality
floor wax as a substitute to kerosene. Banana peels can be easily
found around the trash bins, especially in side streets. Households in the Philippines can use this
kind of alternative since all the materials that can be used on this product can be easily found.
The cost of this
alternative was cheaper compared to the floor wax that was commercially available. The quality
of the Banana peel with Carnauba wax floor wax was just the same or greater than the
commercially available, Brand X floor wax.

Based from https://phdessay.com/peel-da-banana-wax/ a research study, Banana peel has its

many uses. One of these is as an alternative resource in making floorwax. It contains good fiber
that makes the wax smoother and shiner. It offers the same quality just like the other common
floorwax can offer. Moreover, it is cheaper and has a nicer fragrance than the former.
Recommendation: The researcher would highly recommended that we could use banana floor
wax instead of busy commercial floor wax in the market because it is cheaper and fits in our
budget.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

This chapter furnishes the materials and apparatuses that are required in the research.
Furthermore, this chapter also disseminates and enumerates all of the information, trials, and
procedures used to test the variable and experimental subjects.

RESEARCH METHOD

This research is experimental research. The researchers in this experimental study used precise
information and datas of the cause and effect of the variable. In addition, this study also used
scientific observation to manifest the hypothesis that the banana stem as a drinkable juice is
effective and can control high blood pressure.

MATERIALS

The materials required to conduct the tests are mentioned below. Banana Stem. This was used as
the main ingredient and to create the mixture for the tests. It contains potassium that helps
reduce high blood pressure. Salt. This was used as an ingredient to help balance the banana
stem’s juice. Water. This was used to help create the mixture of banana stem.

Lemon. This was used for adding taste into the juice.

EQUIPMENTS

The equipment enumerated below were used for making the juice and for testing it on a
hypertensive person.

Knife. This was used for cutting the stem and the inner core into pieces. Blender/grinder. We
used this tool for grinding the chopped pieces of the core. Strainer. This was used for separating
the liquid from the fibers. Glass. This is where we put the strained liquid of the stem.

Blood pressure monitor. This was used to measure the blood pressure of the person before and
after drinking the juice.

PROCEDURE

Begin the process by thoroughly washing the banana stem to properly clean them from all the
impurities, dust, and chemicals After this, roughly chop the banana stem into small pieces. Put
all the small pieces of banana stem in the mixer grinder. Along with the banana stem, Add water,
salt and lemon extract.. Then, strain and pour in a glass or cup.
