CHAPTER 1 – PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter shows the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance

of the study, hypotheses, scopes and delimitation of the study, and definition of terms.

Background of the study

Floor wax is used to maintain and polish flooring' surfaces. When applied

correctly, floor wax produces great gloss, which is one of its advantages. Commercial

waxes were made of chemical elements. Floor Wax is a wax-based finishing and

polishing product for floors. It was intended to make flooring harder and glossier and to

create resistance to slips and scratch marks.

Floor wax may be harmful and toxic to both the environment and humans. Floor wax

can have negative side effects, and the inhalation and smell of it can affect the

respiratory system, leading to asthma and lung problems. Banana is high in potassium

and can be an alternative floor wax. There are several methods for converting Saba

(Musa paradasiaca) banana peel into various alternatives since banana (Musa) peel

includes many nutrients and vitamins.

After consuming bananas, they have no purpose and are thrown, so the

researchers will create it as an alternative floor wax, because commercial floor wax

contains a lot of chemicals and toxics that can have a lot of harmful effects. Due to its

components, making an organic floor wax from banana peel might be a good

alternative. Saba banana peel provides the slipperiness qualities of a floor wax.
Creating organic floor wax can help to lessen pollution and toxins created by

commercial wax. There are various banana kinds grown across the world, particularly in

Southeast Asia. Banana is grown extensively in tropical countries including the

Philippines where it is one of the most widely grown fruit-bearing plants (Nelson, et al,

2006).

This study is conducted to see if Saba banana peel as an alternative floor wax is

effective towards the community. This study will determine whether organic floor wax is

as effective and less harmful than the commercial floor wax.

Statement of the problem.

The goal of this research is focused on the investigation of saba (Musa

paradasiaca) banana peels as an alternative floor wax.

Specifically, this paper seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the effective composition of the materials?

2. How effective is the alternative floor wax in terms of the following:

2.1 Shininess

2.2 Odor

2.3 Color

Hypotheses

Alternative Hypothesis
Saba (Musa paradasiaca) banana peel is an effective alternative floor wax to

different types of tiles or surfaces.

Null Hypothesis

Saba (Musa paradasiaca) banana peel is not an effective alternative floor wax to

different types of tiles or surfaces.

Objective of the study

 To know

If organic floor wax is more effective than the commercial floor wax.

 To measure

 To create

The researches wants to create an alternative floor wax.

Significance of the study

This research will show the benefits of saba banana peel as an alternative floor

wax. The researchers  are  engaged in reusing organic waste and turning it into a less

harmful floor wax for farmers. Since commercial floor wax has negative effects on the

environment and humans, there will be need for an alternative floor wax.

Environment. It includes the environment for using banana peels as an

alternative floor wax to reduce waste and pollution.

Public Schools. It can lessen the toxic smell for students and teachers. This can

also help save money in buying a store bought floor wax.

User. The user can save money and will be eco-friendly.

Farmers. This study can help farmers since it will reduce their worries about

what to do with waste banana peels.

Community. The floorwax has the potential to generate income for the

community.

Scope and Delimitation

The purpose of this research is to study the possibilities of wastes.  This research

compares the effectiveness of organic floor wax to store-bought floor wax by using

banana peel as an alternative.

Definition of Terms

To facilitate understanding of this study, the following terms are defined based on

how it is used on this study.

Eco-friendly. Doing no harm to the environment.

Organic Wastes. Biodegradable materials that either comes from plants or animals.

Saba. A type of banana that is mostly common in the Philippines.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies

Floor wax

Floor wax is a solution for floor care that has been used for ages (TCS Floors Inc.).
However, Floor wax is created using organic components such as beeswax and
carnauba wax, as well as linseed and other plant-based oils (Heath, 2021). There are
two types of floor wax: commercial floor wax and eco-friendly wax. The commercial
waxes are made of synthetic materials or a combination of synthetic and natural
elements (TCS Floor Inc.). Floor wax provides glossiness, extra hardness, slip and
scratch resistance, and floor protection (Lee, 2017).

Composition and Toxicology

Cresol phenol, xylene, toluene, perchloroethylene, nitrobenzene, kerosene, and other

chemicals are one of the ingredients (Anonymous, 2019). The polymer is an important
component of floor wax. Cresol, which, if inhaled over a long period of time, can cause
liver and kidney problems (West, 2019). According to Barrittine Group in 2021, fatigue
or dizziness may occur. It irritates the skin. Vapor and liquid that are flammable. In the
event of a fire, hazardous breakdown products. Toxic gases may be produced. It has
been demonstrated that banana peel includes several nutrients and minerals and can
serve as an alternative to chemicals. Many believe that daily exposure to such artificial
mixtures might cause health concerns or harm to living plants.
Banana Peel as Organic Waste

Banana is an herbaceous flowering plant with edible fruit that belongs to the genus
Musa and the family Musaceae (Sidhu and Zafar, 2018). One of the reasons bananas
generate so much waste is the common belief that their peels are inedible and useless
(Ewing-Chow, 2022). Also, composting them is a simple process. Simply throw the
remaining peels into to the compost. Although you can throw them in whole, keep in
mind that they require a long time to compost this method. If you don't want to utilize
your banana peel for other uses, throw it in the compost bin. Because banana peels are
a food waste, the composting bin is the best way to dispose of them. Furthermore,
composting them is a simple process.

Harmful Effects to the Environment

Several environmentally people are concerned about the massive quantity of chemical
elements and chemicals utilized in most waxes. Some believe that daily exposure to
such artificial compositions might cause health concerns or harm to living plants (TCS
Floors Inc.) It is also harmful towards the environment because it is highly flammable
and can release toxic smoke. Although, it is useful but can cause problems to the living
things around the environment.

Banana peels as floor wax

Combining the two ideas that banana peels contain potassium and are slippery,

it may be used as a substitute floor wax (Angela G. Alcaraz, Klara Mae R. Dimaano, et

al., 2019). However, there are various wastes or materials that can be floor wax. Mango

peelings can be also an alternative as floor wax, since of its components (Aileen J.

Gabrido, Melinda C. Lagarto, et al., 2019). Meanwhile, others use coconut husks to

make the floors shine, although banana peel may be a good option for industrial floor

wax.
