CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

All research must have a purpose to be significant, which is why the first section of this

chapter focuses on the study’s objective.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

For the past few years, cleaning had been identified as an occupational risk because of an

increased incidence of reported respiratory effects, such as asthma and asthma-like symptoms

among cleaning workers. Currently, there was a need for systematic evaluation of cleaning

products ingredients and their exposures in the workplace. According to George (2012),

commercial floor wax is meant to protect the floors, increase its durability and scuff marks. It has

a great use especially to the household, which has a cement floor since it has a solution that can

be used to make the floor radiant, glossy and shiny. It helps protect the floor from everyday dirt

and tear of foot traffic.

Ever since then, floor wax has been widely used as a floor cleaning product. While there

are still a number of conventional products on the market today, most consumers like man-made

and synthetic floor waxes since they are relatively simple to apply. Although floor wax has good

benefits, it also has its health hazards. Commercial waxes were created using synthetic

ingredients or a combination of synthetic and chemical elements. There has been no question

about the floor's effectiveness and dependability for decades. Without a doubt, floor wax will

accomplish its intended purpose, but right now, industry experts are worried about the harsh

chemicals it may contain and how they can damage the environment.
Given the abundance of banana plantations in our country, and the fact that few people

really use the peels for anything productive, manufacturing floor wax from banana peels won't

cost too much money. Plus, this could help anticipate pollution. It will also probably help

economic crisis nowadays and we could by a less expensive floor wax that could be a similar or

better on a commercial one.

Moreover, producing an alternative floor wax is very important for the people who are

using floor wax in making their floors shine, especially that our country is currently facing

inflation. This research will help them in saving money and will be beneficial to their health.

This is to inform the respondents to create floor wax out of banana peels and to innovate them to

lessen environmental waste.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to prove that banana peels can be recycled into good quality product and

be useful to every household. The study ought to answer the following questions:

1. Are all kinds of banana peel an effective floor wax?

2. Can the different kinds of banana peels be an alternative source of floor wax?

3. Is banana floor wax as efficient as the commercial wax?

4. Is banana peelings acceptable as an alternative floor wax in terms of;

a. Smell

b. Texture

c. Hardness
HYPOTHESIS

HA: Yes, banana peeling is an effective floor wax since this homemade floor wax will

give a comparable shine and smoothness just like the commercial ones.

HO: No, banana peeling is not an effective floor wax since it cannot guarantee the

cleanliness and smoothness of the floors.

OBJECTIVES

The main purpose of this study is to:

 Prove that banana peels can be recycled into good quality cleaning product and can be

useful to households, that can prove the effectiveness of banana as an alternative use of

floor wax.

 Reduce the presence of hazardous chemical components in the floor waxes used

economically.

 Develop a floor wax product that is cheaper and can provide the same level of quality as

commercial floor wax, that could provide contrast, and test the alternative floor wax's

friction, smell, and shininess.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This project highlights the floor wax made from banana peels. This study aims to create

floor wax out of banana peels in which it will be beneficial to the following:

School: This study will benefit students as well as their parents so that they can save

money in times of cleaning.

Household: Having homemade floor wax can lessen the use of money because they can

create one that is less expensive and less harmful.

Environment: Having organic and homemade floor wax can help anticipate pollution

and can lessen the use of toxins and environmental waste.

Future researchers: This study will be the guide or the basis for further research about

making an alternative floor wax. It will give them some idea about the innovation of floor wax,

which is made out of banana peels.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

With the use of different kinds of banana peels such as lakatan, latundan, and saba the

researchers could explain how can they make an efficient floor wax. The study is focused only

on making an alternative floor wax out of banana peel and determining the effectiveness of

it through experimentation.

This research is limited for people who use floor wax. This study can give benefits to

people especially the poor ones to save money for their other needs. Additionally, this can help

people in minimizing the use of toxins in our environment and this can also provide protection

and cleanliness to their floors.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Related literature enables a researcher to identify and categorize study topics. It helps in

explaining the importance of resolving a problem. It avoids the unnecessary duplication of

research that might serve as a source of the conceptual foundation for the investigation.

Related Literature.

Floor waxing is important part in maintaining, to look presentable, shiny and especially

to prolong the life of hardwood floors. Commercial floor wax is meant to protect the floors,

increase its durability and scuff marks (George, 2012). Waxing also adds shine to floors which

can brighten and give off a squeaky clean appearance. It can also diminish the appearance of

grooves and faults especially in wooden floors in a professional environment such as offices,

restaurants, hospitals or any medical center that undergoes a lot of foot traffic (Jan-Pro, 2016).

Floor wax has a great use especially to the household, which has a cement floor since it has a

solution that can be used to make the floor radiant, glossy and shiny. Also, commercial floor wax

is an important way to maintain any non-carpeted floor and should be applied periodically in

order to ensure that the protective barrier remains intact (CleanItSupply, n.d).

The banana may also be used as an alternative ingredient to floor wax. Banana peel is

known for its slippery effect. It can be easily found since consumers just usually throw the peels

thinking that banana peels were not usable or does not have value anymore. Bananas are fast-

growing herbaceous perennials arising from underground rhizomes. According to Liesl Clark

(2013), banana peels can also be a natural alternative sources of shoe polish, teeth whitener, and
etc. It also has compounds that can be used as insecticides. Banana peels are also good in

lowering cholesterol and being safe from cardiovascular diseases. They are cultivated primarily

for their fruit, and to lesser extent for the production of fiber and as ornamental plants.

Although floor wax has good benefits, it also has its health hazards. Traditional synthetic

waxes contain substances that can either cause severe damage to humans and animal life if came

in contact. It is toxic especially if the chemicals used contain hazardous solvents.

Commercialized floor wax contains harmful chemicals. These chemical substances are risky

when breathed in (Voung, 2015).

Banana.

Banana is one of the most important fruit crop plants and belongs to the genus Musa.

After harvesting the fruit, the plant is cut down and thrown away, mostly as waste. Banana is the

second most produced fruit after citrus. It has 16% contribution in the world’s total fruit

production. According to Vigneswara, Pavithra, Gayathri, and Mythili (2015), banana fibers

have a huge contribution for textile and packaging industry. However, the banana stem forms a

major source of waste material. But today, most of banana fibers are used for making ropes and

cordage. They have compositions, properties, and structures that are suitable for using in

industrial application.

According to Tacio (2013), the Philippines is considered as the third largest producer of

banana in the world. Banana is considered as the most economically important fruit crop in terms

of volume of production and export earnings as it contributes significantly not only to the
national income but also to employment. Among the most cultivated varieties of banana in the

country are the latundan, lakatan, saba/cardaba and bungulan.

Candles.

Candles are one of the earliest forms of portable illumination and it has served its

functions for human kind throughout history. Although the materials that comprise a candle have

changed through the years, the art of candle making has remained similar to the original

production processes. Candle wicks were at first, made of reed or rushes; eventually various

natural fibers were used.

According to Wikipedia, the definition of candle is a “solid block of fuel” and an

embedded wick, which is lit to provide light, and sometimes heat. Waxes compromises a broad

group of opaque, water repellent, essentially solid materials having varied chemical composition

and many diverse applications. They soften gradually on heating, going through a soft, malleable

state before ultimately forming a liquid.

Related Literature.

Floor Wax was a wax-based preparation used to finish and polish floors. It was meant to

increase hardness and glossiness in flooring and create resistance against slips and dirt’s. Any

business owner deciding how to coat and preserve their floors must take into account a number

of important aspects, including durability and health consequences. According to scientific

research, banana peels are not just used polishing silverware, leather shoes, but some scientist
discovers that banana peels can also be a water purifier and that it can perform better than in

purifying metals (American Chemical Society, 2011).

A main problem of the society is the price hike of gasses and banana peels are just a trash

in everybody’s household. Moreover, there was superabundance of bananas in the Philippines

which makes the research more suitable and more significance that can help the improvement of

the society's welfare. Aside from its abundance, Banana peels contain potassium, a chemical

element, that can be applied to leather, woods, and metals that makes a natural polishing agent

and can be used to shine the mentioned materials.
