ABSTRACT

In general, this study aims to create a floor wax out of banana peelings and it can

be made by the household. In other words, the main objective of this study is to produce

or create more options for people to choose. Banana peelings will be cut to pieces and

later on will be added to the floor wax. The banana peelings will serve as the main

ingredient in making the floor wax. Paraffin wax, polyethylene wax, kerosene and banana

peelings will be used for the mixing. There would be 4 trials, each have different

measurements but the same amount of kerosene. After that, the researchers are going to

test its quality by undergoing certain procedures such as friction test.

After conducting the experiment, results show that banana peelings can indeed be

used as a main component in making floor wax. The trial 4 is successful enough to

withstand the test prepared by the researchers. These concludes that banana peelings can

be used as a component in making floor wax.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Floor wax is a great material for polishing floors, it has be a friend and a trusted

material for keeping floors shiny as well as making it look new and pleasing to the eye.

These are all synthetic materials which is expensive and also not good for the health and

environment since the commercialized floor wax used an ingredient which is also known

as kerosene. This research aims to aid the household users of floor wax into using a much

safer, natural, organic and especially cheaper way of shining floors. It is not only cheap

and natural but also very efficient because we are using banana peels to be its primary

source in making floor wax, and this can be available at home and household users can

make their own

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

The researchers decided to formulate this study because they noticed that almost

everyone, specifically the people who live in the rural areas often use commercialized

floor wax. The researchers wanted to know if there is an alternative way of making floor

wax without using harmful chemicals that can destroy or damage the health of the person

using it as well as the environment. This study will focus on banana peelings and its

effectiveness as an ingredient in producing affordable and cheaper floor wax.

The researchers conducted this study due to economic crisis. This study aims to

create a floor wax which is low cost and could give the same quality like commercialized

floor wax. This floor wax can help users and consumers save money and less harmful

compared to another floor wax.

This study can have a significant impact to the society because instead of

throwing banana peelings, the researchers decided to put this in a good use by making

this into a floor polish. The researchers can find and eco-friendly floor wax that is safe to

use since it is made from banana peelings.

Background of the Study

The research study is conducted by the researchers to know if the banana peels

can be an alternative source in making floor wax that has a less odor compared to another

floor wax. To inform the target market that they can create their own floor wax using

banana peels that can be seen being thrown away and much safer than any other

commercialized one. The purpose of the research is to innovate the reusable banana peels

to lessen environmental waste.

In 135 countries and territories across the tropics and subtropics, Bananas are

being produced. The majority producers are farmers who grow the crop for either home

consumption or for local markets[CITATION Véz15 \l 13321 ] .Banana is the second most

produced fruit after citrus. It has 16% contribution in the world’s total fruit production. It

has also stated that India is the most or the largest producer of banana in the world

estimating up to 27% of banana’s production. According to them the banana is useful in

every part just like food, feed, pharmaceutical, packaging, and many other industrial

applications [ CITATION Deb10 \l 13321 ].

Bergh, Picq and Vezina (2013) stated above that bananas are being produced in

135 countries and that only means that banana is everywhere. Bananas can always be

seen being sold by people in the market or people have their own farm that also produced

bananas.

In the article above by Debabandya Mohapatra (2010) stated that banana is the

second most produced fruit. Bananas are available in any market anywhere in the

country. India is the largest producer of banana and can be used in different areas of

living.

Research Objectives

The study aims to determine the effectiveness of banana peelings as an alternative

source in making floor wax.

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of using banana peelings as an

alternative source in making floor wax.

Specifically, this investigatory project aims to answer the following:

1. Are banana peelings effective in making floor wax?

2. Can banana peelings with polyethylene wax, paraffin wax and

Kerosene can make the floor shine?

3.Can banana peelings help lessen the original odor of commercialized

floor wax?

Hypotheses

1.Banana peelings are effective source in making floor wax.

2.Banana peelings together with paraffin wax, polyethylene wax and kerosene can

make the floor shine.

3.Banana peelings can help lessen the original odor of commercialized floor

wax.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the related literature and studies both local and foreign

sources. This also includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or conclusions and

others. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing information that are

relevant and similar to the present study.

Related Literature

Bananas

Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Guinea, were the primary centers

and India is a secondary center for banana diversity (Simmonds and Shepherd 1955).

Bananas are the developing world’s fourth most important food crop (after rice,

wheat and maize). The crop is grown in more than 100 countries throughout the tropics

and sub-tropics with annual world production of 88 million tons. Bananas provide a

staple food for millions of people, particularly in Africa, an area where the green

revolution has had little influence.

The diversity of bananas spreads across southern states of India (Simmonds 1962;

Singh and Uma 2000; Uma et al. 2008). Since then, attempts have been made in the states

of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to evaluate accessions, resolve synonymy, identify mutants

and classify cultivars based on cytological and morpho-taxonomic characters.

The articles above from Simmonds and Shepherd (1955) and Simmonds et.al

(2008) are relevant to our study becauseit helps the readers and as well as the researchers

about banana’s diversity and helps them understand that banana is widely eaten and

consumed throughout the world. It only proves that bananas can be used and can be

found and is accessible to the researchers and as well as the household.

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

Growing urbanization in many developing countries means that the crop is

becoming more and more important as a source of revenue, sometimes providing the

main source of income for rural communities. Bananas thus play an important role in

poverty alleviation.

Banana is a substitute crop for paddy fields and hence people cultivate more

banana. He also proved that there is a negative correlation between the cost of

production and the net profit of banana. He also pointed out that profitability of banana

is higher for owners or cultivators than for tenant cultivators. (Sangili, 1980)

Emile Frison et al., (1998) in their article remarked that bananas and plantains are

extremely important crops throughout the developing countries of the tropics. They are

not only a staple food crop for millions of people, but they also provide an essential

source of income through local and international trade

Approximately 13% of worldwide banana production is destined to the export

market. For many countries, especially in Latin America and Caribbean, bananas provide

an essential source of foreign exchange and the crop plays a vital role in the social

andpolitical fabrics of the islands, including the French departments of Guadeloupe

andMartinique.

Thearticlesof Sangili (1980) and Emile Frison et al., (1998)are relevant to our

study because it states that crop is important as a source of revenue and income for the

persons living in many areas which makes it more available to all. The peelings that are

thrown can still be recycled and it made the researchers have the idea of makingfloorwax

with banana peelings as its main ingredient.

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

A few literatures emphasize on the existence of bioactive compounds, which may

not be directly applicable for human consumption readily available through induction

from the banana by products (Luque-Ortega et al. 2004; Otalvaro et al. 2007) These

bioactive components are potential substitutes for industrial chemicals and functional

compounds in pharmaceuticals as well as could be further exploited into numerous

applications. These isolated bioactive compounds, which are generally secondary

metabolites (produced naturally or induced) of the banana by- products, were reported to

have antiprotozoal, antifungal and antiviral activity.

The literatures of Luque-Ortega et al. (2004) and Otalvaro et al. (2007) clearly

elaborates that bananas have bioactive compounds that has a good effect in the body of

an individual and promotion on better health. In conclusion, this study makes us

understand that the banana peelings as an alternative source in making floor wax only

advocate eco friendly products. Thus, this study states that using banana peelings and

adding it as an ingredient in the floor wax would not do any harm in the person using it

and will not damage the things that has been used in it.

Historically, plants have been used for the extraction of natural products. Various

plants are cited as sources of natural dyes such as Teak, Mahogany, Ketapang, Tamarind,

Mangosteen, Mango, Suji, Pandan, Indigofera, Guava, Banana and Onion,

(Nurizza,2015), (Ado, A.,2015). Various plant parts including roots, leaves, twigs, stems,

heartwood, bark, wood shavings, flowers, fruits, rinds, hulls, husks, and the like serve as

natural dye sources. (Sujata and Raja, 2014).

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

Banana plant parts also involved with mordanting, flame retardant finishing of

cotton and promising dye adsorbent of textile effluent. Banana leaf and pseudo stem sap

mixed another natural dye had used for cotton coloration. (Repon, Reazuddin et al. 2016)

This literature from Repon, Reazuddin et al. (2016) serves as a basis and helps the

researchers to know more information about banana. Banana can be use in so many ways

such as a natural dye which can make the floorwax pleasing to the eyes. This gave the

idea for the researchers to use it in a way where people can benefit not just because it is

abundant in the surroundings but also a substitute to dangerous dyes that has chemicals

which can harm the people using it.

Floor wax

The inhalation intake of airborne organic compounds from cleaning product use is

estimated to be of the order of 10 mg d−1 person−1 in California. More than two dozen

research articles present evidence of adverse health effects from inhalation exposure

associated with cleaning or cleaning products. Exposure to primary and secondary

pollutants depends on the complex interplay of many sets of factors and processes,

including cleaning product composition, usage, building occupancy, emission dynamics,

transport and mixing, building ventilation, sorptive interactions with building surfaces,

and reactive chemistry. (Atmospheric Environment, Faigel 1964)

The article from Atmospheric Environment written by Faigel (1964) states that

the cleaning products including floorwax can damage one’s life and health. There are

many bad health effects of using cleaning products such that being exposed to this might

build or create illness and diseases to the body without that person knowing.

Banana is widely consumed fruit

The Philippines dominates the banana trade in Asia and accounts for 98 per cent

of the banana exports from all Asian suppliers. The country exported 2.6 million tonnes

of bananas in 2012 which was 98 per cent of the Asian banana trade and makes it the

world’s second largest exporter after Ecuador with 12 per cent share of the global export

volume. Two thirds of the Philippines export volumes shipped to Japan, China and South

Korea (Prowse, 2013)

Banana (Musa paradisiaca, family Musaceae) is a central fruit crop of the tropical

and subtropical regions of the world grown on about 8.8 million hectares [ CITATION

Moh10 \l 1033 ]. It is possibly the world's oldest cultivated crop [ CITATION Kum12 \l

1033 ].

Banana is undoubtedly the most widely and commonly grown fruit in the

Philippines’ market and has a wide potential here and abroad. "It is not only a dessert

fruit it can also be made into banana sauce, fried chips, flour purees, vinegar and wine. "It

is also used as a substitute for our staple food (Estrella, 1996)

Also, the international trade in bananas is of considerable economic importance.

The estimated world production of banana and plantain fruits in 1990 was about 71

million tons; bananas accounted for 46 million tons of which, in 1989, 8.1 million tons

were exported (FAO, 1989; 1990)

It is estimated that as many as 100 million people subsist of bananas and plantains

as their main energy source (Rowe, 1981)

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

The studies from Prowse (2013), Estrella (1996) and Rowe (1981) above support

the researcher’s study in terms of providing information and comprehensive body of

supporting material about bananas which is part of research work. The studies clearly

help the people to realize that more and more bananas outside and inside the country is

produced. Hundreds and thousands of bananas are exported throughout the world. People

in the different areas would tend to throw the peelings away so, we the researchers have

planned to make use of it instead of putting it in the trash. The studies above provide data

about the production of banana which correlate to our study. Bananas are widely

consumed and the best way to recycled it and use it in good purpose, the researchers

decided to make bananas as an alternative source in making floor wax.

Bananas as an eco friendly dye

Synthetic dye is commonly used in some chemical assays, textile industry and

commercial products. A number of commercially used synthetic dyes have been reported

contributing to health problems, which justified the need to remove these dyes from

wastewaters. (Mas Harris and Sathasivam, 2009) demonstrated the capacity of banana

pseudostem(Musa paradisiacacv, ‘PisangAwak’ ABB) as a potential absorber of methyl

red in aqueous solutions. This recent finding and study further compliment earlier studies

that show the capability of banana stalk waste as an absorbent to remove methylene blue

from aqueous solutions (Hameed et al. 2008) Natural heavy metal and dye absorbers

made from renewable low-cost banana by products are relatively cheaper compared to

synthetic and inorganic absorbers but may not work well in extreme conditions (high pH

and high temperature) (Mas Harris and Sathasivan 2009)

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

Mas Harris and Sathasivan (2009) study shows that banana peelings can also be a

great help in making dye and use it to make the product catchy in the eyes and easily be

noticed. The study also patronizes the use of eco friendly dyes that can aid in the use of

other synthetic dyes that is harmful.

Floor wax as floor cleaning and composition

Preferred non-ionic surfactants include the condensation products of ethylene

oxide with a hydrophobic polyoxyalkylene base formed by the condensation of propylene

oxide with propylene glycol. The hydrophobic portion of these compounds has a

molecular weight sufficiently high so as to render it water-insoluble. The addition of

polyoxyethylene moieties to this hydrophobic portion increases the water-solubility of the

molecule as a whole, and the liquid character of the product is retained up to the point

where the polyoxyethylene content is about 50% of the total weight of the condensation

product. (Smith and Murphy, 1986)

Smith and Murphy (1986) explains that the chemicals in the floor wax is not

really good for the health. It is beneficial to the research study because it gives the

researchers about the back ground of the floor wax and why it will harm and is advisable

to use a safer and more affordable one which cannot deeply damage one’s health and also

the environment.

Significance of the Study

This research study was anticipated to contribute additional information and help

in different aspects.

The study is beneficial to the following:

The Students. This study could help the students because this could be their new topic for

research and would enable them to draw insights and can provide better understanding of

the uses of banana in the households

The People in Rural Areas. This study would be beneficial to them in a way that this

alternative type of floor wax is very cheap and effective. The ingredients used are

affordable and can be seen inside the house.

The Household. This study would be beneficial to them because this product is not that

expensive and they will be able to clean their house as well as helping the nature by using

trash as an alternative floor wax at home.

The Society. This study would be beneficial to them because the ingredients are less

harmful than commercialized floor wax. The materials needed and the procedures to be
Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus

followed are simple and easy so that society could make their own without spending

money.

The Environment. This study would be beneficial to the environment because the

ingredients used in the study are reused and trashes or banana peelings are being recycled

instead of throwing it anywhere or in the garbage bag.

Future Researcher. This study could help the future researchers conduct further studies,

and have a background about the benefits and uses of banana peelings. This would be a

great help for other researchers who are also concerned about this kind of topic and

would be a basis for them to conduct this study.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This study is only limited for the investigation of banana (Musa Parisiaca) used as

alternative source in making floor wax. The researchers chose this for further

investigation if the banana can be an effective source for floor wax. This research study

will be conducted in the residence of Lencioco Family, one of the researchers, during the

first week of November and will take approximately 3 days, the other variables like

weather and environment may affect the researchers’ study.

For more information about the study, the researchers made some additional data

gathering through the internet related to the study.

In order to conduct the study, the researchers prepared all the materials for the

experiment. The banana peelings were the leftovers of the bananas the researchers

haveeaten, we will only add a small amount of kerosene in our experiment.

Once the researchers were done mixing all the materials needed for this study, the

researchers look for a suitable location to conduct the study and the place the researchers

found was at our fellow researcher’s house at Pavia, Iloilo City.

The researchers listed all observations and results after conducting the said study

Materials and Procedure

The researchers in this study divided the methodology into two parts: (a) The

Making of Alternative Floor Wax and (b) Friction Test (c) Replicability Test (d) The

Consistency Test

The following are the materials used in making the banana peel as alternative floor wax:

 Banana Peelings

 Technical Dye (if desire)

 Scraper

 Kerosene

 Container

 PolyethyleneWax

 Paraffin Wax
Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus

The following are the procedures in this experiment:

A. The Making ofAlternative Floor Wax

1. The researchers listed all the materials needed

2. The researchers looked for a place to start the experiment and brought all the materials

needed.

3. Mix 800g. Paraffin wax w/ 100g. polyethylene wax. (The amount of polyethylene wax

and paraffin wax would vary according to what trial are the researchers going to make)

4. Melt the materials in a low fire.

5. While still not add wax crystals (optional)and technical dye (desired color). Stir the

mixture. (The wax crystals and technical dye are optional, so the researchers would

decide whether to put or not it during the experiments)

6. Add 3.2 Liters of kerosene. (Again, this may also vary according to what trial the

researchers are making)

7. Add the banana peelings, the amount banana peelings will be different for each trials

that will be done by the researchers

8. Pour in a desired mold or container and allow to harden.

Table 1.1:

Discussions

In the table, the Friction Test column is a test that is performed on a material

sliding over itself or on another type of surface. It is generally determined to be the ease

by which two surfaces (often of different materials) slide against each other. In this part,

the researchers tried to slide the banana peelings floor wax on the floor to test its quality

and if it is usable for households.

In the table, the Replicability Test column is a test wherein the quality is exactly

copied or reproduced. In this part, the researchers tried to test if it sticks properly and

doesn’t break out when used. The researchers then analyze and written the data above if

it’s replicable or not.

Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

In this table, the Consistency Test column is a test the way in which a substance,

typically a liquid, holds together; thickness or viscosity. The consistency can be tested

If it doesn’t melt or ruin if it is left and doesn’t damage the floor if used. The floor should

look clean and not dirty if the banana peelings floor wax is used,

In this study, we conducted series of test to guarantee the effect of the materials.

The alternative floor wax was first made by mixing all the materials needed as well as the

little amount of kerosene to make our wax resist against the floor.

Trial 1 is not that resistant against the floor since we tested it, it is also replicable

since the said experiment is very easy to do; the consistency of the alternative floor wax

was good since we mixed all the materials accordingly to the procedure. Here are the

materials that are used at trial, 500 g paraffin wax 100 g polyethylene wax 2.5 liters of

kerosene 3 cups of banana peelings.

Trial 2 is not that resistant against the floor because we tested it against the floor,

the said floor wax was a little slippery; the replicability of the said floor wax was good

since the experiment is very easy to do, the consistency of the floor wax was also good

because all of the materials were mixed together. The materials that were used in trial 2

are 400 g paraffin wax 90 g polyethylene wax 2 liters of kerosene 4 cups of banana

peelings.

Trial 3 floor wax is not resisting the floor and it’s still a little slippery, the

replicability of the floor wax is good since the said experiment is very easy to do, the

consistency of the said floor wax is good since the material that were used all sticks

together, we tried rubbing all of the experimented floor wax to the floor and all of the
Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus
Ledesma, Street Iloilo City

materials are consistent. Here are the materials used in trial 3, 300 g paraffin wax 80g

polyethylene wax 1.5 liters of kerosene 5 cups of banana.

Trial 4 the friction test was good since the alternative floor wax was resisting

against the floor, the replicability of the said floor wax was very easy since it is very easy

to do and the consistency of the alternative floor wax was also good since all the

materials that were used were mixed together and it shows consistency. Here are the

materials which are used, 200 g paraffin wax 70 g polyethylene wax 1 liter of kerosene 6 cups

of banana peelings

The commercialized floor wax is good when it comes to friction test, but when it

comes to replicability, it’s not replicable enough because we the researchers need to buy

another one which means more expenses, the commercialized floor wax is also good

when it comes to consistency because it’s not falling apart.

Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter deals with the conclusions related directly to the research questions.

It shows logical deductions based on the data in Results and Discussion section. It also

includes recommendations for future researchers who wanted to conduct further

investigations regarding the effectiveness of banana peelings as an alternative source in

making floor wax.

Conclusions

The researchers concluded that Trial 4 was the most effective one out of the four

other trials. Trial 4 is the part where the researchers put a big amount of banana peelings

and lessen the use of chemical materials. Other three trials show good results also

regarding the friction, replicability and consistency test but only the Trial 4 succeeded in

those three areas.

The results clearly determined that banana peelings are way more ecofriendly

source in making floor wax.

Overall the banana peelings as an alternative source in making floor wax was a

success. The banana peelings can be used and is a new way to help lessen the garbage in

the environment and can also help the household in having an affordable floor wax that

can be used in everyday life without spending much and using only items that can be

easily be bought and seen in a community.

Recommendations

The researchers recommend to use better equipment during the experiment. To try

another alternative that can be used instead of other chemicals. The researchers also

suggest to always use safety materials during the process of the experiment to avoid any

contact on the chemicals which may or may not harm one’s health. The researchers also

commend to research more about the banana peelings uses to deepen their understanding

towards the given topic or study. To broaden their ideas regarding the study so that they

can clearly elaborate and explain the advantages and disadvantages of this study o people.

The researchers proposed not to only base or rely on the ideas or the learnings stated in

the study but to discover something new that might help the study in the process.

Finally, the researchers mentioned to the future researchers to add more related

literature and studies to learn more about what they’re doing and what is supposed to be

done during the experiment. And to further improve the study in a way that household

and people can made it possible with less hassle and more productive results.
