Cell Cycle Scroll Instructions

We will be creating a “scroll” that depicts the stages of the Cell Cycle that we have been
covering. As a class we determined that a group activity would be the
ideal way to assess our knowledge of the cell cycle. This activity is
going to have two parts. The first part is going to be focused on
depicting and describing the cell cycle, the second part will be
focused on using research to answer questions. We will be breaking
up into groups for this activity. Start by putting the names of your
group members on the back of your paper (not the side your group is
drawing on), in the upper left hand corner.
Materials Needed:
● A long sheet of paper (provided)
● Markers, pens, pencils, and other coloring utensils (provided)
● Rulers (provided)
● One laptop per group
Part I:
For part one, your group will be drawing out and describing the stages of the cell cycle.
Guidelines for the drawings:
● Your drawings will depict the cell cycle at the cellular level.
● Be sure to color your drawings and include labels.
● Make sure your drawings are done neatly.
● I’d recommend drawing in pencil first and then using markers to make sure everything
pops.
Under the drawings you will include descriptions of each phase and you will need to include the
four checkpoints that were covered in the interactive. Ensure that these descriptions are
detailed, there is a lot going on in each stage, so there’s a lot to talk about!

So, on the front side of your scroll you will need to have:
● Colored drawings for G0, G1, S, G2, the phases of mitosis, and cytokinesis.
● Identify the four checkpoints.
● Provide descriptions of each stage in the cell cycle and the checkpoints.
Part II:
Upon completing part one, you will send one member of your group to me and I will provide you
with the description of a person. Your group will be given the person’s height, age, gender, as
well as some background information on the person. Using this information your group will
research and answer questions on the backside of your cell cycle scroll.

This is not to be done off memory, use your resources to provide accurate and detailed
responses!

The questions:
1. What types of cancer is your person at risk for? Why?
a. Create a claim: “My person is at risk for ______ Cancer”
b. Provide evidence: What factor influences this risk?
c. Explain your reasoning: Why do these factors increase your person’s risk?
2. Using the “Cell Growth and Cancer” Simulation, input your person’s height and age and
run the simulation.
a. Draw the graph that the simulation gives you after 7 seconds.
3. Using the information from your simulation answer the following questions:
a. What types of cells did the simulation display?
b. Using the simulation as evidence, in what ways does your person’s height and
age influence your cancer risk?
c. Why might cell division influence this?
4. What is p53? What is the role of p53 in the cell cycle? How does it relate to cancer?
5. How would having more p53 genes affect humans and their risk of having cancer?
