PART 1

PASSAGE 1: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer
sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 1 to 7.
In 1812 a young man called James Barry finished his studies in medicine at Edinburgh
University. After graduating he moved to London where he studied surgery at Guy’s Hospital. After
that the popular young doctor joined the army and over the next forty years had a brilliant career as
an army medical officer, working in many far-off countries and fighting successfully for improved
conditions in hospitals. It was a remarkable career - made even more remarkable by the discovery
upon his death that he was in fact a she, James Barry was a woman.
No one was more surprised at this discovery than her many friends and colleagues. It was
true that throughout her life people had remarked upon her small size, slight build and smooth pale
face. One officer had even objected to her appointment as a medical assistant because he could not
believe that Barry was old enough to have graduated in medicine. But no one had ever seriously
suggested that Barry was anything other than a man.
By all accounts Barry was a pleasant and good-humoured person with high cheekbones,
reddish hair, a long nose and large eyes. She was well-liked by her patients and had a reputation for
great speed in surgery – an important quality at a time when operations were performed without
anaesthetic. She was also quick tempered. When she was working in army hospitals and prisons
overseas, the terrible conditions often made her very angry. She fought hard against injustice and
cruelty and her temper sometimes got her into trouble with the authority. After a long career
overseas, she returned to London where she died in 1865. While the undertaker’s assistant was
preparing her body for burial, she discovered that James Barry was a woman.
So why did James Barry deceive people for so long? At that time a woman could not study
medicine, work as a doctor or join the army. Perhaps Barry had always wanted to do these things and
pretending to be a man was the only way to make it possible. Perhaps she was going to tell the truth
one day, but didn’t because she was enjoying her life as a man too much. Whatever the reason,
Barry's deception was successful. By the time it was discovered that she had been the first woman in
Britain to qualify as a doctor, it was too late for the authorities to do anything about it.
Question 1: What is the main idea of the passage?

WWF, in full World Wide Fund for Nature, international organization committed to
conservation of the environment. In North America it is called the World Wildlife Fund.
In 1960, a group of British naturalists - most notably biologist Sir Julian Huxley, artist
and conservationist Peter Scott, and ornithologists Guy Mountfort and Max Nicholson - led an
effort to establish an organization that protected endangered species and their habitats. The
following year the World Wildlife Fund was founded; the international name was subsequently
changed to World Wide Fund for Nature in 1989, although in the United States and Canada
retained the founding name. The organization’s distinctive panda logo was created by Scott. In
the face of growing environmental threats over the ensuing years, the WWF’s activities
expanded in scope. Today its mission statement is threefold: to conserve the world’s biological
diversity, to ensure that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and to promote the
reduction of pollution and of wasteful consumption. The organization has long included both
conservationists and business people with the intention of combining solid scientific data with
well-managed action. It also seeks cooperation between nongovernmental organizations, local
governments, and local populations. The WWF works closely with the World Conservation
Union and has formed partnerships with the United Nations, the World Bank, and the European
Union.
The WWF provides money for conservation initiatives around the world. These include
programs focused on individual species, forests, and freshwater and marine issues as well as
climate change and responsible international trade. The group has also been involved in efforts to
provide a safe and sustainable habitat for the world’s peoples, both urban and rural, including
clean water, clean air, healthful food, and rewarding recreation areas. Among the WWF’s notable
achievements is its use of debt-for-nature swaps, in which an organization buys some of a
country’s foreign debt at a discount, converts the money to local currency, and then uses it to
finance conservation efforts. The WWF’s first successful debt-for-nature swap took place in
1987 in Ecuador.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the WWF was active in more than 100 countries and
had more than five million supporters. The organization’s international headquarters are in
Gland, Switz., and it has more than 90 offices around the world.

Online lectures are the first choice in the context of long-lasting and complicated Covid-
19 pandemic given their advantages. However, teachers say distance learning has many issues
which need to be solved to achieve the set goals.
The biggest advantage of online classes is that all materials, discussion questions and
tests are stored on an online platform; therefore, students can easily access these contents
anytime and anywhere. Lectures will be broadcast live for many students at the same time and
could be recorded to be
replayed.
Nevertheless, talking to Hanoitimes, Dao Van Diep, a teacher of Hanoi-based Lomonosov
My Dinh Primary School pointed out some disadvantages of online classes. "The most
outstanding one is that in the online environment, teachers cannot remind their students, and
there is not any specific timetable so that students can follow", Diep said. "In addition, there are
some other barriers such as equipment, transmission lines, interactions between learners and
teachers. As students are not familiar with the online method, it's hard to get their focus on the
lecture which sometimes is interrupted due to poor transmission speed."
"The biggest shortcoming of online classes is the way of testing and evaluating students.
I am struggling to find out what kind of test should be used to best assess my students. When we
let students take the test from a distance, it is very difficult to ensure they do the test honestly.
We need the instructions from the Ministry of Education and Training on this matter," Diep said.
In a phone interview with Hanoitimes, Tran Thi Hai Yen, managing director of Alpha
School in Hanoi said that her school has made a big investment in online teaching infrastructure
and developed an online teaching plan during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, since the
municipal Department of Education and Training has prohibited schools from collecting tuition

4
fees, it is difficult to implement because schools with paid education do not have backup
funding for free teaching.

Electronic devices are becoming increasingly common in educational environments. The
term most commonly used for such devices is "educational technology". This is not actually a
new idea, as the rewritable wax tablets, often with lined surfaces to guide novice writers used in
antiquity or the blackboard itself are both instances of technological innovations to support
pedagogy.
There are many different ways in which electronic devices are used in education. For
example, students in STEM (science, technology, engineering medicine) fields have been
making extensive use of sophisticated calculators for many years (the abacus and slide rule were
non-electronic predecessors to calculators).

5
In humanities as well as sciences, students use computers or equivalent devices to do
research and write papers.
In all fields, courses are now likely to have websites, and many instructors use course
management software such as Blackboard, to post information for students, record grades, set up
online discussions, and check for plagiarism.
In lecture classes, many instructors project slides or notes on a screen and may even upload
lecture notes so that students can review them. Some courses are hybrid, meaning that they have
a strong online component, or offered entirely online. Many courses taught in conventional
lecture halls are streamed online, and may use devices such as clickers to become more
interactive.
Any device (including tablets or cell phones) that instructors incorporate into a learning
environment functions as educational technology.
1. According to the passage, the term "educational technology" refers to ________.
A. electronic devices used in education
B. the rewritable wax tablets used in STEM
C. sophisticated calculators
D. course management software
2. The word "instances" mostly means __________.
A. special types B. typical cases C. excellent chances D. right occasions
3. The word "extensive" in the passage is closest in meaning to _________.
A. great B. maximum C. full D. poor
4. The word "they" in the passage refers to _________.
A. classes B. instructors C. students D. courses
5. According to the passage, which of the following does NOT function as educational
technology?
A. the blackboard B. the abacus C. the tablet D. the cellphone

The World Trade Organization came into being in 1995. One of the youngest of the
international organizations, the WTO is the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade (GATT) established in the wake of the Second World War. So, while the WTO is
relatively young, the multilateral trading system that was originally set up under the GATT is
over 70 years old.
The past 70 years have seen an exceptional growth in world trade. Merchandise exports have
grown on average by 6% annually. This growth in trade has been a powerful engine for overall
economic expansion and on average trade has grown by 1.5 times more than the global economy
each year. Total exports in 2016 were 250 times the level of 1948. The GATT and the WTO
have helped to create a strong and prosperous trading system contributing to unprecedented
growth.
The system was developed through a series of trade negotiations, or rounds, held under the
GATT. The first rounds dealt mainly with tariff reductions, but later negotiations included other
