The idea of beauty has been changing throughout the years. In the 21st century, many are the
people that think that beauty is strictly connected with physical appearance. Not only does this
affect women but it also affects the male gender.

Nowadays, intense pressure is exerted on women of all ages. Physical beauty (usaria algo mas

personality and intelligence come later. It seems that being beautiful help people to be
important, popular and to increase their chances of, for example, getting a job. The mass media
is the main source from where the stereotypes of beauty are reinforced. These stereotypes

advertisements of different toys such as Barbie and those of cosmetics, clothes and beauty
treatments, to mention some, the perfect female style is the one that shows a thin body, blue
eyes, blond hair, ample breast and to end with the look fashionable clothes and high heels.
Celebrities are another clear example of how women must look like. As a consequence, women
grow up with this idea and try to achieve it at all costs.

More recently, men has(have) been reached by this 21st century ideal of beauty. In this case,
such ideal has to do with formal clothes and with men being metrosexual. Strange as it was
some years ago, nowadays more and more men take care of their physical appearance as
much as women. Cosmetics for the male population are increasing as well as beauty
treatments. What’s more, it is thought that those men that are dressed with suit and that have
an invigorated body are more successful in all the aspects of their life such as work,
relationships, among others.

In conclusion, although it is true that there may be people that consider that human beings’
personality and intelligence are primary, it is also true that there are many others that believe
that beauty is really skin deep in the 21st century.
