Cement Materials
Tutorial

The tutorial will focus on a research article published in relation to low carbon cements.
The aim of the tutorial is to aid you in the assessment for this course, which is to compile a
scientific poster based on a journal article. There will also be opportunities to ask any
general questions you may have about the topics covered in the lectures.

Prior to your tutorial, read the article

“Effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag on the properties of calcium sulfoaluminate
cement”
Danying Gao, Yang Meng, Lin Yang, Jiyu Tang, Mingyan Lv
Construction and Building Materials, 2019, 227, 116665
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.conbuildmat.2019.08.046

In the tutorial, we will work in small groups to discuss the paper. To aid the discussion,
here are key questions to answer:
 What is the main aim of the research covered in the paper?
 Putting the work in context, what is the bigger picture of this research?
 How have the authors approached the study?
 What key results are presented?
 What are the outcomes?
 Is any further work suggested?

Additional information
The assessment for this part of the Advanced Materials Chemistry Course is to present a
poster based on a scientific paper published in the area of cement materials. Assessment
information will be released on Friday 31st March, which will give details on the
assessment criteria and a list of papers for you to choose from to compile your scientific
poster.
