research and development in areas related to chemical engineering. Outcomes At the end of this course students should be able to:
1. Carry out literature review on research topics related
to chemical engineering. 2. Establish a methodology to carry out experimental or theoretical research. 3. Analyse and interpret experimental and theoretical data. 4. Write a scientific report. 5. Write a scientific article. 6. Communicate research findings by means of poster presentation. Deliverables The deliverables are:
A Literature Review Article: at the end of semester I
Use of Turnitin software
Full Research Proposal: at the end of semester I
A Viva Session: at the end of semester I.
A Final Report: at the end of semester II.
An Article at the end of semester II.
Use of Turnitin software
A Poster to be presented in the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate
Research Day (ChemEng URD). Project Allocation The project allocation is carried out before the start of the session.
Every lecturer is asked to propose up to 2
topics of research and submit to the coordinator at least 1 month before the start of the session. A one page proposal is submitted.
Students form their own research groups
(maximum two students per group) and they submit their names and contact emails to the coordinator before the start of semester 1. Project Allocation The list of projects along with project choice form is sent to students via email.
Students are given one week to choose 6
topics by order of priority and submit their choice to the coordinator (via email).
The projects are assigned based on the choice
of students and in some cases by lucky draw and the final list is distributed to the students and lecturers as well. 2010/11 project list Project schedule and Important Dates.
Record student-supervisor meetings
Assessment
Individual assessment Task 1: Literature review The literature review is a very important step in research.
Good understanding of the research topic.
Good knowledge of the recent developments in the field of study. Good understanding of the research methodology. It helps you to define the scope and the objectives of your research work. It helps you to come up with the research methodology It helps you to analyse and interpret your results. How to start a literature review ? CO2 absorption by alkanolamine solution with ionic liquid as additive
1. Why we want to study CO2 absorption ?
2. What an alkanolamine solution is? 3. What an ionic liquid is ? 4. How does an alkanolamine react with CO2 ? 5. Types of alkanolamines used and their characteristics. 6. How the absorption process is studied ? 7. What other researchers had done so far ? Critical review of previous research work. You have to identify your keywords 1. CO2 2. Absorption 3. Ionic Liquids 4. Alkanolamine 5. CO2 removal Start your search
1. Books for theoretical background
2. Web 3. Research Journals and patents (at least 30 per group)
