SCHOLA BREVIS: Expectations Setting and Course Introduction

1. The exact content topic focus for weeks 4-8 is "Language and Culture: ‘Learning
English is not just learning another language but also learning about culture(s)’". The
goal is to discuss the definitions of language, show the relationship between language
and culture, and foster a deeper sense of understanding of cultural relativism using the
lens of language.

2. TEAL stands for "Teaching English as an Additional Language".

3. Based on reading resources, for me, the change from TESL to TEAL reflects a shift in
how English is viewed as a language. English is no longer seen as a "second"
language, but rather as an "additional" language, which acknowledges that many
people worldwide use English as a means of communication alongside their first
language. This change is important because it recognizes the diversity of language use
and promotes a more inclusive approach to language education (British Council, 2021).

4. In my opinion, the important question that we need to answer throughout the Prelims
weeks is "In what ways are Philippine programs and policies in teaching English
similar (or different) from its counterparts in the ASEAN region?" This is an
important question in our course because it allows us to understand the context of
English language teaching in the Philippines and how it compares to other countries in
the ASEAN region. This understanding is crucial in developing effective language
policies and programs that are relevant to the local context.

(There will be a focus on ASEAN in this course because it is important to understand
the language policies and programs in the ASEAN region, especially English language
teaching. ASEAN is a diverse region with many different languages and cultures, and
understanding the context of English language teaching in this region is crucial in
developing effective language policies and programs that are relevant to the local
context.)
