Faces of History

Classical Conversations Essentials

Faces of History: The Capstone of an Essentials Year!

During each year in Essentials, students select a famous person from the history
focus of the current Foundations cycle, prepare a five-paragraph research paper
using the tools developed in the IEW work for the year, and then present their
person to the class (and others from the community).

Students work on their Faces of History papers during Unit 8 of the IEW book
(Formal Essay Models). In this unit, students learn to use multiple sources to
determine several topics within a general theme, create fused outlines, write
introduction and conclusion paragraphs, and prepare a bibliography.

On Week 24, as a final celebration for the Essentials year, students give a
presentation of their Faces of History paper, often dressing as their selected
person and presenting their paper in first person. It's a wonderful celebration
and capstone experience for students and parent alike!

Faces of History: How to Scale

Faces of History can be scaled for any age, ability, or tour!

Parents, as the teacher, you may reduce or eliminate any elements as needed.

Adjust the checklist by requiring only the stylistic techniques that have become
easy, plus one new one. Remember, “EZ+1!”

Some ideas for scaling might include:

 Reducing the number of sources
 Reducing the number of body paragraphs
 Shortening the introduction or conclusion
 Reducing the number of dress-ups, sentence openers, or decorations per paragraph
 Eliminating the bibliography
 Shortening the oral presentation

Choose Your Character

A Faces of History paper consists of up to a five-paragraph research paper on a famous person.
Characters are typically from the current history cycle, but the parent makes the final decision
on which character the student chooses.

Gather Resources
Read anything you can find about your person. Use library books, timeline cards, Story of the
World books, history books, or the internet, with the help of your parent (it is recommended that
you use sites that say “for children”). You’ll need at least three sources that are at reading your
reading level or below. Scan each source for topic ideas.

Source 2: ________________________________________________________

Source 3: ________________________________________________________

Source 4: ________________________________________________________

Decide on Three Topics

Select three topics or “themes” to write about in your paper. Possible topics include:

 His/her childhood, what life was like when he/she was young
 His/her personality, quirky things he/she did, or what made this person unique
 His/her clothes
 Something that he/she is famous for doing
 Something that he/she invented
 His/her adult life, unusual things he/she did, or things that happened to him/her
 How he/she became famous
 His/her second biggest accomplishment
 How this person affected the rest of history, science, art, etc.

Body Paragraphs
(Community Week 20)

Topic A Rough Draft

Use your Topic A Fused KWO to write a rough draft for your first body paragraph.
As you start, think about…
What order would make sense for your facts?
What would be interested to start off with? What would be good to save for last?
What dress-ups, sentence openers, decorations, and vocabulary words can you include?

Topic B Rough Draft

Repeat the same process for your second topic.

Topic C Rough Draft

Repeat the same process for your second topic.
Note: The third topic should be the most exciting, so spend extra time on this paragraph!

Edit Body Paragraphs

Go back through all three body paragraph rough drafts and make sure you have all the dress-
ups required. Read your paragraphs aloud to see if they make sense.
Parents: Use a checklist specially created for Faces of History or a checklist of your choice.

Plan a costume or visual aid for your presentation. You might make a shield, hat, or costume,
or carry something symbolic of the personal, or bring in something that he/she invented.
Be creative!

Prepare a first person presentation from your five-paragraph paper. You can simply change
the paper from third to first person, or adapt your paper into a dramatized presentation.
Parents: Students will need help adapting the paper to a presentation format!

Prepare for the Faces of History Presentation! Presentations do not need to be memorized.
You may use your paper (or index cards if you prefer). But practice at home until you are
comfortable with your presentation!
