Territory,
Wealth and
Income of India
A Keynote Lecture by
Jahnavi Phalkey

I will explore the making of political arguments and territorial stability based on
statistical knowledge through three episodes beginning in the late nineteenth century
and ending in the middle of the twentieth century. All three were explicit efforts to
account for the wealth and income generated on the Indian sub-continent driven by
distinct imperatives. I want to understand the implications of these motivations
through what was calculated, by whom, why, and to what outcomes.

Jahnavi Phalkey is a historian of science and

technology, and a filmmaker. She is the Founding
Director of Science Gallery Bengaluru. Jahnavi is the
author of 'Atomic State: Big Science in Twentieth
Century India,' and the producer-director of the
documentary film, 'Cyclotron'. She is a recipient of
the Infosys Prize in the Humanities (2023).
