The Academic Library

- The academic library is an institution


within an academic parent institution – the
college or the university. Its primary purpose
is to support teaching, research. And
extension services functions of the university.
Academic Librarian
As an academic librarian manage,
organize, evaluate and disseminate
information, providing support to
members of an academic community
including students, researchers and
lecturing staff.
Objectives
1. To provide facilities for all teaching, learning, educational and
research programs of the university;
2. To cater to the information needs of teachers, students,
researchers associated with the university;
3. It provides facilities to its users for intellectual development which
is a power of acquiring ideas through individual efforts;
4. Providing latest knowledge to teachers in their field for effective
teaching it makes transmission of knowledge possible.
Functions
1. By procuring comprehensive range of documents including books, manuscripts,
journals, magazines, newspaper etc. on varied subjects, it conserves knowledge and
ideas.
2. By processing the procured documents with the help of classification, cataloguing,
proper shelf arrangements it gives easy and open access to knowledge to its users;

3. In order to organize huge collection of documents it keep them in different sections


on the basis of their categorization like textbook section, reference section, journal
section, theses section etc.,
4. It provides facility of inter-library loan to its users if document desired by user is not
available in the library.
Functions
5. Modern university interact with different information networks;
6.It also provides entertainment and healthy leisure to users by providing
different newspapers, magazines, short story books, fiction, internet facility
etc.;
7. It gives the user orientation training to new enrolled users to make them
feel at home and to acquaint them with the library system so that they could
make maximum use of library services;
8.It provides reference service through reference section to establish a
contact between the right reader and the right document in personal way to
attract more users.
ACQUISITION SECTION
- Responsible for purchasing books
-Keep complete and up-to-date books
- Backbone of whole library

TECHNICAL SERVICE SECTION

- Catalog and Classification


-OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)

CIRCULATION SECTION
- houses and circulates the major library collection covering the different
areas of discipline. This section adopts the “open shelf” system, where
users can go directly to the shelf and choose the books they would like to
browse or use.
FILIPINIANA SECTION

- Keeps the material authored by Filipinos, Reference on the Philippines and its
people, History, Art and Culture, Published in the Philippines.

MULTI MEDIA OR IT SECTION


- houses of visual aids, microfilms and computers of the library
- where can access online resources

REFERENCE SECTION
- houses a collection of extensive general reference materials, which
are intended to be consulted for a particular question or query, rather
than read thoroughly.
encyclopedia, dictionaries, handbooks, yearbooks, atlas,
almanacs and more
RESERVE SECTION
- houses books, which are in demand and limited in copies.
It adopts the “close shelf system”. Users are not allowed to
enter this section; they seek the assistance of the library
staff or library assistants.

PERIODICAL SECTION
- where you can find local and foreign newspapers and
magazines
- where you can find / read/ latest news and events that is
happening to the world.
