MAINTENANCE OF TSO PASSENGER OXYGEN MASKS

A. Effectivity

This Service Information Letter is applicable to all TSO passenger oxygen masks manufactured by
B/E Aerospace (or formerly by Puritan-Bennett). The part numbers of these masks all begin with one
of the following base part numbers:

B. Reason

There have been an increasing number of inquiries and concerns from the industry regarding
maintenance of passenger oxygen masks. Operators need to be familiar with the manufacturer’s
recommendations regarding service life and maintenance of these products.

C. Statement

(1) Following are the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding service of the mask part numbers
listed in Table 1.

(a) TSO passenger masks produced by B/E Aerospace are made from a number of materials, each
of which has a different life expectancy. For normal usage and stowage, the component
expected to wear or degrade the earliest is the elastic headband. Due to the sensitivity of this
material to its environment, however, the elastic headband can deteriorate at very different
rates depending upon application. As a result, it is difficult to predict the exact life of the product.
Inspection is therefore the key to ensuring the reliability of the passenger mask, since it will be
evident that the mask is in need of maintenance when the headband begins to lose its elasticity,
or when any other component of the mask shows signs of deterioration. The Component
Maintenance Manual relevant to each mask provides guidelines and procedures for inspection.

Service Information Letter
(1) The service recommendations listed below are guidelines based on testing and the observed
performance of the masks over many years of field experience.

(a) Service Life - The mask is guaranteed for service without routine maintenance or inspection for
three (3) years from date of manufacture or date of installation (if known). After three (3) years,
annual inspection is recommended with repair or overhaul to be performed as indicated by the
condition of the mask.

(b) Overhaul/Replacement - The mask is recommended for overhaul or replacement at 6 - 8 years


from the cure date of the elastomeric components of the mask, or at the earliest sign of material
deterioration. All elastomeric and vinyl components of the mask should be replaced during
overhaul.

(c) Shelf Life - The service life of the mask is considered to be unaffected by storage prior to initial
installation for up to six (6) years continuously from the date of manufacture, providing it has
been stored in a sealed package at normal ground temperature (+15 to +35°C) and humidiity
conditions and appropriate inspections are conducted.

(d) Expected Life - When all recommended annual inspections, repairs and overhauls are
performed, the maximum expected life of the mask is twenty (20) years from date of
manufacture. With proper inspection and testing of condition, however, the mask may be
deemed suitable for continued use even after 20 years.

(2) If mask cleaning is required, there is only one approved method of cleaning passenger masks. All
components of the mask can be cleaned on their exterior surfaces by wiping them with a solution
of mild detergent and distilled water, rinsing them with distilled water, and returning them to service
only when they are thoroughly dry. Detergents should be free of ammonia, alcohol and citrus
products which can affect the integrity of the materials.

(1) Replacement masks, overhaul kits and spare parts are available from B/E Aerospace for all masks
series other than 114019. The 114019 mask is obsolete and must be replaced with an approved
alternate.
