Social Media
Practices

UNDERSTAND YOUR MOTIVATION

Ask yourself why you use social media. Is it to
engage with friends? Or find a specific video?
Once you have completed your purpose for being
online, give yourself a break. Also ask, “Are there
other ways that I could interact or find what I am
looking for?”

PAY ATTENTION TO
YOUR EMOTIONS
While on social media, or after using it, ask
yourself how you are feeling. Are those
feelings mostly positive or negative? Are you
aware of what content is making you feel
that way and what you can do to change it?

CHOOSE WISELY
Algorithms pay attention to what you look
at or click on so that they can tailor your
feed. Be aware of the content you linger
on, as you will see more and more of it. Be
intentional about what you interact with,
and view media that you find uplifting.

SET LIMITS
Boundaries on your social media use can
help make sure you are giving attention
and focus to other areas of your life, such
as family and school.

BE MINDFUL
Stay present in the moment. This means giving
your full attention to whatever activity you are
involved with, including social media. Evaluate
the time you spend online and take note of
any negative behavioral changes.

KNOW YOUR
INTENTIONS
Before posting, ask yourself if your
words are true, necessary, and kind (or
at least constructive). If not, what can
you change to make them so?
