You heard about biomimicry, you watched the talks. Could this be it? A few online

The Biomimicry Practitioners Programme
empowers you to confidently practice and apply
biomimicry to your career, organisation, or
next project. And in the spirit of innovation,
we’ve adopted a refreshing approach to tradi-
tional education: blending project-based teach-
ing, apprenticeship mentoring, and peer to peer
learning with complementary skills.
The starting point of your Practitioners Programme
is the Introduction to Biomimicry course,
followed by Biomimicry’s Lifes Principles and
Biomimicry Masterclass. These three courses
lay down the solid foundational knowledge you
need to get going.
As the course guides you through the biomimicry
design methodology, you’ll get to practice bio-
mimicry in the working world. You’ll discover
how to think from first principles, identify the
functions you want to emulate, discover related
strategies, and develop Nature-inspired solutions.
You’ll learn to evaluate your project using an
ecological standard based on Nature’s ingenuity.
Then, present it in a way that’s clear and easy to
understand. Success is defined by your ability
to apply biomimicry in the context of your own,
personally-selected project.

Course Structure
We’ve created the Biomimicry Practitioners Course in a project-based learning format. It means you
get to choose your own project. So, as you develop your biomimicry skills you’ll get to apply them in a
way that’s specific to you and relevant to your work.

We’ve kept cohorts small, so you’ll be personal-

ly mentored by a biomimicry expert. They will
help you to select and refine your project topic.
All our course content is online, and you’ll com-
municate with your cohort and mentor via live
Zoom calls and a Slack group.

Ultimately, you will produce a complete bio-

mimicry-based project that you can share with
us and the world!
About the Certificate
Complete the course and you will be awarded
the Biomimicry Practitioner certificate –
certified by Learn Biomimicry and endorsed
by the Biomimicry Institute.

Assessment is continuous and on based

 Meet your success team
Jessica Berliner, Course Facilitator

Jess has an unwavering passion for nature, education and design,

which slowly steered her career into specialising in biomimicry
education. She led the course design of the Learn Biomimicry cours-
es, worked closely with Claire Janisch and BiomimicrySA for around
10 years, and assisted in building up the biomimicry community in
South Africa. Today she’s more globally focused, and frequently con-
nects with the top biomimicry practitioners around the world. Jess is
passionate about improving the way that we design our products and
systems and believes that biomimicry provides both the vision and
the means to do so.

Melissa Sikosana, Biomimicry Practitioner Mentor

Melissa is an innovative thinker equipped with a wild curiosity for na-

ture-inspired design. She dances between engineering, biomimicry and
innovative thinking, all whilst completing her PhD in biomaterial science.
She holds a Master’s in environmental process engineering and practical
experience working in biomimicry as a project manager and water special-
ist. She’s professionally covered topics ranging from nutrient and energy
recovery from water-carried waste, to biomimicry indicators for urban
hydrological cycles (BPrac 2015), and self-cleaning water containers.

Her most recent project is her PhD, co-developing bioinspired antiadhesive

surfaces and antimicrobial coatings for use in low-cost water treatment.
Melissa is a natural optimist and is excited by an opportunity to co-create
functional and simple socio-technological interventions that improve how
people and communities function.

Yuma Langenbach, Biomimicry Practitioner Mentor

Blending chemical engineering, biology, and a Master’s in Biobased

Sciences, Yuma has been practising biomimicry since early 2013. She’s
worked on projects from e-waste recycling and water upcycling to circu-
lar design, ecological machines, and living buildings. Originally trained
by Claire Janisch, Yuma has honed her biomimicry practice to work on a
wide variety of projects, all of which aim to create conditions conducive
to life. Today she guides learners to apply biomimicry and accelerate
nature-inspired design so that we can bring nature’s genius more into
our human world.

Interesting fact:
All three individuals share a golden thread – each was professionally
trained by, and worked alongside, the late (and great) Claire Janisch.

Frequently asked questions

When does the next cohort start, and how long does it run for?
Generally, we run four cohorts each year: starting in March, May, July, and August.
Each cohort runs for 6 months. Find the next cohort dates here.

Do I need to have completed the Foundational Course Set before I apply?

No. You can apply without having enrolled or completed the Foundational Course Set. These short
courses can be completed within your own time. The only prerequisite is that you complete all
three short courses before starting the Practitioner Programme.

What if I don’t have a specific project in mind?

That’s okay! Many individuals arrive without a set project in mind. The first step is to complete all
three short courses to grasp the foundational biomimicry knowledge you’ll need for the programme.
Fortunately, this also provides you with boundless inspiration that you can use to brainstorm with
your course facilitator

What’s the difference between a Biomimicry Practitioner

and a Biomimicry Professional?
Biomimicry practitioners are individuals who apply biomimicry practically
to projects in their general field (i.e. architects, business consultants, etc).
A biomimicry professional is a specialist in biomimicry and requires a 3-year
Master’s Degree from the Arizona State University. To become a biomimicry
practitioner, you can start right where you are—with us!

or in seven monthly instalments of $399.

for the Practitioners Programme.

There are no hidden fees or costs.
