The first approach has become a serious alternative
to air travel for distances up to 800 Km, at a lesser
cost both to the wallet and the environment, since
trains have a much lower Carbon footprint. In fact,
some countries plan to ban internal plans that take
less than two hours. For example, the flight from
Paris to Marseille (775 Km) takes around 90 min-
utes and the TGV takes three hours, but the train
goes to the heart of the city. Given that a car or bus
generally takes around one hour from any given
airport to its namesake city, the train easily becomes
the best option as there is no need to spend sepa-
rately to get to the city.
Internal flights could be redundant in a small country
such as Sri Lanka if the trains can reach speeds of
150 Kmph or more. Once the Jaffna line is complete-
ly repaired, a speed of 100 Kmph will be attainable,
but anything beyond that calls for the electrification of
the rolling stock. The SLR should expedite its plans to
electrify the entire network, starting with the Main and
Coastal lines, which are mostly on flat land. The pro-
posed India-Sri Lanka land bridge could also mark a
turning point in rail travel in South Asia, as it will even-
tually be possible to board a Chennai-bound train in
Colombo. We have to think big when it comes to mak-
ing rail travel more accessible and appealing for all
travellers.
