UNIT 9: IN THE GROCERY STORE
Lesson 1
I. Objectives:
* By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
+ correctly pronounce the name of the letter Y / y
+ correctly pronounce the name of the letter Y / y in isolation and in the words yogurt, yams and
yo-yos
+ recognize the words in different situations when listening.
- Ss can develop some following competences:
+ Communicative and collaborative competence: act 1, act 3, act 4
+ Problem-solving competence: act 1, act 3
+ Self-studying and self-control competence: act 2, act 3, act 4
+ Problem-solving and creative competence: act 4
*Language focus:
- Sound: Y
- Vocabulary: yogurt, jams, yo-yos
- Differentiated teaching:
+ Incomplete ss: can pronounce the name of the letter Y/y in the words yogurt, yams and yo-
yos
+ Well-completed ss: can recognize the words in different situations when listening.

Activity 1: Warm up
- Sing a song
Activity 2:
-Content 1.Listen and repeat
a. Teaching the letter Y/y

- Procedure:
+ Have Ss point to the letter Y/y explain that the name of the letter Y/y is different to its sound
/Y/
+Encourage Ss to repeat several times
b.Set the scence:

- Procedure:

+Have pupils look at the picture and describe it. Draw pupils’ attention to the letter Y/y, the word next
to Bill and other words next to the things and the color of the letter Y/y
+Ask pupils to point to the letter Y/y . Have them listen and repeat the sound of the Y/y
+ Show the picture and elicit the answer of who the characters are.
+Tell pupils to point to the word yogurt. Ask them to listen and repeat the word
+ Repeat the same procedure with the yams, the bike and yo-yos. Give further support to those pupils
who find it difficult to do the task.
+ Play the recording again and have them listen, point to the letter Y/y and yogurt, yams and yo-yos
and repeat until they feel confident. Correct pronunciation, if necessary.
+Play the recording again and call some pupils to say the letter Y/y and the words yogurt, yams and
yo-yos in front of the class.
Activity 3:
-Content 2: Point and say
- Procedure:
+Have pupils look at the picture again, saying Look at the picture on Page 40, please! Ask
them to describe the picture again. Draw their attention to the letter Y/y
+Get them to point to the letter Y/y and say it, saying Point to the letter Y/y and say, please!
+Let them point to the yogurt and say yogurt , saying Point to the yogurt and say, please!
Give further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do the task.
+ Repeat the same procedure with yams, yo-yos. Give further support to those pupils who
find it difficult to do the task.
+ Ask pupils to work in pairs or in groups
+ Invite some pupils to point to the picture and say the sound of the letter and the words in
front of the class.
Activity 4:
-Fun cornner : play a game “Grabbing pictures”

- Procedure:
+ Divide class into two groups
+ Ask Ss of two groups play game
+ Congratulate the winner
 Consolidation:
- Content: Review the letter Y/y and words (yogurt, yams and yo-yos)
- Procedure:
+ Ask Ss to answer the following questions:
What have you learnt from the lesson today?
What are the core values of the lesson? ( if the teacher can take from the lesson).
+ Praise some Ss who are hard working/ active/ good…. as well as encourage others
to try more.
+ Give feedback
 Homework:
- Learn by heart the words: yogurt, yams, yo-yos

Lesson 2
I. Objectives:
* By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
+ correctly pronounce the sound of the letter Y/y, the words yogurt, yams, yo-yos
and say the sentence structure “Can you see the……” in the chant
+ recognise target words and sentence tructure while listening
+ Trace the letter Y in upper case and lower case.
+Write the letter Y/y and complete the yogurt, yams and yo-yos
- Ss can develop some following competences:
+ Communicative and collaborative competence: act 1, act 3, act 4
+ Problem-solving competence: act 1, act 2, act 3
+ Self-studying and self-control competence: act 2, act 3, act 4
+ Problem-solving and creative competence: act 4

Activity 1: Warm up
-Play game: Who said it?

Activity 2:
-Content 3 : Listen and chant
- Procedure:
+ Have pupils look at the chant. Ask them to pay attention to the letter Y/y and the word
Yo-yos
+ Ask pupils to listen and repeat the first line, saying Listen again and repeat, please! Then
play the recording for them to listen and repeat until they feel confident.
+ Follow the same procedure with the other lines. Show pupils how to chant and clap their
hands.
+ Play the recording all the way through. Ask pupils to listen and repeat the chant
individually and in chorus, saying Listen and chant, please! Give further support to those pupils who
find it difficult
+Select some pupils to the front of the class to chant and clap their hands. The rest of the class
may sing the chant along and clap their hands

Activity 3:
-Content 4: Listen and tick:

- Procedure:
+Have pupils look at the first two pictures and say what they can see. Draw pupils’ attention
to the boxes next to the letters a and b. Check comprehension.
+Play the recording of the first sentence for pupils to listen.
+ Encourage some pupils to point to the pictures and say the words in front of the
class
+ Ask pupils to say what they have heard and ticked
+ Ask pupils to share their idea with their partner
+ Call some to go to the board and write their answers
Activity 4:
-Content 5: Look and write:

- Procedure:
+ Have pupils look at the letter Y (upper case) and y (lower case). Write the upper case Y
and the lower case y on the board
+ Write the upper case Y and the lower case y in broken lines on the board
+ Tell pupils to trace the letter Y/y , saying Now use your pencil to trace the letter Y/y.
+ Check the results of pupils’ tracing and give feedback. Ask pupils to work in pairs and
swap their answers.
+ Ask some pupils to show what they have done. Praise them if they have done well.
 Consolidation:
- Content: Review the words and the chant
+ words: yogurt, yams,yo-yos
+ chant
- Procedure:
+ Ask students to answer the following questions:
What have you learnt from the lesson today?

- Game: “Lucky stars”

Activity 2:
-Content 6: Listen and repeat

- Procedure:
+ Have pupils look at the picture, saying Look at the picture, please! Describe the picture.
+ Draw pupils’ attention to the structure “ What do you want? I want some jams. Have
pupils point to the jams, listen to the recording and repeat the sentence
+ Then play the recording again for them to repeat individually and in chorus. Correct
pronunciation
+ Play the recording several times again for pupils to listen and repeat the sentence
+ Invite a few pupils to listen and repeat the sentence “What do you want? I want some
jams.” in front of the class. Correct their pronunciation
+ Have pupils work in pairs, good Ss will help the below average and average Ss.
Activity 3:
-Content 7: Let’s talk

- Procedure:
+Point to each character in the picture & elicit the words to fill the gaps.
+ Have Ss repeat the text in the bubbles a few times.
+ Repeat the procedure with the second picture.
+ Do choral & individual repetition.

+ Have Ss practice in pairs. Check as a class.
+ Ss practice more with their friends, using their own words.
+ Get Ss to repeat the text a few times.
+ Call a few pairs to act out the structures in front of the class.

Activity 4:
-Content 8: Let’s sing

- Procedure:
+Have pupils read the lyrics to familiarize themselves with the first verse of the song
+Play the recording several times for pupils to repeat line after line to make sure that they can
sing the verse correctly.
+Have pupils listen to the whole song, drawing their attention to the pronunciation, the stress
and the melody of the song.
+ Let pupils practice singing the song. Help them sing the song sentence by sentence first. Then
help them to sing the whole song.
+ Ask some pupils to sing the song individually
 Consolidation:

+ ask students to answer the following questions:
